The parade stepped off at 6:00 p.m. from the school, winding around town en route to the football field. After arriving at the field, cheers were done to keep the school spirit alive. Spirit was really shown when the contests were held. Between the contests the King and Queen were announced. Jana Meyer was crowned Queen by Nyla Rein- hart, 1961 Queen, and Chris Boyd was crowned by Keith Nanke, the 1961 King. After the crown- ing, the senior class let the balloons go from their float as a symbol of pride. The week's climax came to a peak Saturday night at Lincoln's annual Homecoming Dance. Students were twirling among the balloons and tinsel to the music provided by KCRG. During the middle of the dance came the official crown- ing of the King and Queen. The night had a terrific be- ginning with a meal of chick- en and roast beef. It was fol- lowed by the traditional reading of the wills and prophecies. Then everyone went upstairs for an exciting “Night On Ice” by dancing away to the music of 93.9 KRNA D.J., Michael McKay. After the dance ev- eryone had their chance to win wonderful prizes at Ve- gas Night, a project a paren- tal committee worked on all year. After a few hours of gambling away their money, and winning free prizes the guests Could enjoy some spe- cial entertainment: a second dance. Finally all who stayed were served breakfast. They also helped the Brad Petersen family when their house was destroyed ay a fire. They did so by sponsoring a school-wide movie and giving the family donations made at the door by Lincoln students. They participated in the activi- ties that have been performed by past peer groups. These high schoolers worked to gain self-esteem for themselves and their peers. They did so by meeting to discuss things together, doing things for others, acting as counselors to their fellow students. A few times they met with Gene Werheim and Pam McLoad, two Grant Wood counselors. to discuss problems of today’s teenagers. Around Christmas, the group gathered food and necessary items, and distributed them to needy families in the community. At times win- ning by only a slim margin due to tough competition, the team also sent two events to state. They consisted of Jackie Mertka in the long jump finishing 6th in state (16'9% ’) and the 10 FSHR with a team composed of Chris- tie Block, Jackie Mertka, Carolyn Corbin, and Debbi Sander. An end to a successful season was also the end of a successful coach. With Richardson as a coach his teams were always sure to be winners, because he made everyone on the team feel like a winner.
