Some 300 entries were chosen as outstanding out of the several thousand around the state, and Matt was one of twenty performers to be named outstanding in two events YES, YES — IT’S NO, NO, NANETTE The Cast: Kathy J. — Lucille Early, Matt G Trainor, Ann J Nanette, Molly C M Betty, Mark D Pauline Bill Early, Steve D Jimmy Smith, Jill H The best part about it, is it's not gaudy! On Nov. 5 and 6, the audiences at the productions of ‘No, No, Nanette” were tak- en back in time to the 20's for a weekend drama. This soap-opera-like story had many misunderstandings between Jimmy Sue Smith and Billy Lucille Early, all be- cause of three floozies — Flora, Betty, and Winnie — that Jimmy had been giving mon- ey to. Meanwhile, Billy's assistant, Tom, proposes to Jimmy's niece, Nanette. She turns him down, though, because she is tired of being just a ‘‘dumb dora’’. Everyone gets back together at the end, and the floo- zies get their money (along with the guys in t he chorus). Besides the actors, many people worked ringing doorbells, running a ‘“‘human vacu- um, lighting the scenes, and making it pos- sible for everyone to ‘see the beach — see the beautiful beach!’ Despite a missing doorbell, many sore throats and a table that liked to trip chorus members, the show was a success that left many people, singing '| Want to Be Happy”’ and ‘Tea for Two.”’ Winnie, Melinda J Flor Sue Smith, and Vor m™m What a Peach of a girl, she’s charming 3, Andy daM Sophistication hits us all Open Wide! The class spent much time working on the writing of articles in journalistic style and working on layouts for the Pioneer-Herald. mS, ie Typical day of “‘Animal’’ Staff working? working hard or hardly tures. Much time is spent making layouts and writing the dreaded copy. The hardest part of the year was selling the ads, which along with the book sales, finances your yearbook. The staff busy as usual!! WORKING TOGETHER Although the softball squad of ‘82 was small, the team did work well together to rack up a 15-12 season record and a 7-7 confer- ence record. Behind the coaching of Mr. Gary Stamp, the Panthers were able to make it into the first round of regional softball. The season of '82 had its ups and downs. There were times the team looked to be a sure winner only to be surprised, but at other times the team from LHS would blow a team right off the field. Altogether, Lincoln won five games in 5 innings or less includ- ing a 21-9 massacre of the Lisbon Lions. Because of their scoring ability, the team was ranked 34th in the state for total team runs (225) and 24th for runs scored- game (8.33). Lincoln kept the fans coming with the two winning streaks in the season of 5 and 6 games. One of these winning streaks included a battle of the bats in a game pla- gued by extra-base hits between She’s OUT! Lincoln and Oxford Junction. After 9 innings of play, the Panthers won the game 19-9. Batting was a big factor as 5 of the 9 starters ended the season with batting averages over 300. Since the bats were so impressive, the team was mentioned several times in the All-State selections. The team was ranked 34th for doubles game, 19th for total team triples, 15th for triples- game, and 19th for team slug- ging percentage (.439). Angie Block and Vonda Meyer both with 3 and Kris Weber with 2, got Lin- coln ranked 16th in state for total number of homeruns in a season (8). The Softball Panthers learned many things during their last sea- son under the direction of Coach Gary Stamp. The girls learned that they always had to work as a team to get the job done, and there was never one individual star — it was always a team effort. Batter up. Coach Doug Jackson gave the Golden Glove Award to Deron Jurgensen for his talent at catch- ing. Scott Jackson received the Leading Hitter Award and Rick Scott received Most Improved Player. For All-Conference honors, Scott Jack- son was selected for 1st Team Shortstop and All- Northeast District, and Deron Jurgensen was chosen for Honorable Mention Catcher. There was something unusually different about the boys baseball team — there was only one senior, Keith Jones. The rest of the squad was composed of a strong nucleus of six sophomores, five freshman, and one eighth grader. Although the Panthers finished 5th in the conference, tied with Midland and Preston, they still will have ten returning letter winners back for the next confer- ence title. The Panthers ended their overall season with an 8-11 record. Their last loss of the season came when Clarence-Lowden shut out the guys 8-0 in sectional action. Again this year, the girls won the Mid-East conference with a perfect 7-0 match record. This season marked the third year that Lincoln has taken the conference in as many years as the conference has been established. Under the coaching and zest of new head coach, Marilee Oldorf, the girls played tough — tough enough to overcome their conference rival Clarence-Lowden to become sectional champs. Going into regionals, the girls played Bellevue and beat them three games straight to advance into the second round. But in the second round of regionals, the Panthers were beaten by the eventual state champs, Clinton Mater Dei. Lincoln was only one of two class 1A schools to beat Clinton a game in the regular season. - Sisterly love The floor is your friend, Flo ‘Lincoln was blessed with experienced, well-skilled girls to enhance Lincoln's Conference record. Re- turning lettermen were Robert Boysen and Joe Inman for the boys and Kathy Boysen for the girls. Also running for the guys this year were: Mike St. John, Joe Corbin, Mike Sand- er, Willie Wells, Tim Davidson, Jeff Linder, : BOTTOM: Tim Davidson, Joe Inman, Kathy Boysen, Wayne Lehrman, and and Wayne Lehrman. Kathy was the only girl Jeff Linder. This fell between the two-a-day practices for foot- ball because Coach Richardson was also the coach for it. Bob pulling away from the pack. A fish out of water Where's the outhouse at? Darn inflatable shorts! Corbin and Saint ‘bolting’ past the competitors. The season was highlighted by three meets in which Lincoln varsity guys placed first. On Sept. 8, the Pan- thers went to the Lancer Invitational hosted by LaSalle. Kathy placed 4th in the varsity girls race, and the varsi- ty and junior varsity guys also captured firsts. It was a big boost for the fellows and they knew that there wouldn't be another course quite as hilly. The Bellevue Invitational was the next victory which was held on the 22nd of September. The varsity boys got their second win, while Kathy ran away with first by a twenty second margin. Traveling to Oxford Junction on the 1st of Octo- ber proved to be a real winner. A total of three firsts were scored on that day. Kathy finished in first place and so did the junior varsity team. Then the varsity guys scored 24 points to make up the third win of the day. A record setting meet occurred on the 18th of Octo- ber at the Shellsburg Invitational. The varsity guys placed an unthought-of second, but two new cross country records were set! Robert Boysen had a time of 10:43 and a time of 12:35 was clocked for Kathy Boy- sen's record setter. On the 21st, Lincoln went to Waver- ly for districts. This meet cast a shadow over the season for the guys. Kathy did great with a 5th place finish and headed on to state. The guys weren't so lucky with their 5th place standing only four teams qualified for state. Lincoln missed by 17 points which isn't really that much if you consider all the possibilities in cross country. Kathy went to state for the second time in her cross country career. The junior ended up in the 21st position at the state meet. Robert Boysen was voted the most valuable runner and was named as captain for the 1982-83 season. Coaching was an odd story this year. Steve Richard- son set up workouts but couldn't attend the meets after school due to football practices. So teachers, who could, were asked to go as a coach; even Marge Doser, secretary, played coach for one meet at Shellsburg. Coach Richardson comments on the season, ‘‘We had an excellent season! | was very pleased with the number of guys out, and | believe that was our strength. We placed 5th at districts; it’s too bad that our district meet was the toughest in the state, otherwise we may have qualified for the state meet in Ames. Kathy ran very well. It took a lot of courage to work out with the guys’ team. I'm proud of the members of the cross country team; it takes a special type of person to par- ticipate in this sport, and we have some excellent com- petitors.”’ FEROCIOUS FIGHTERS Another well-earned lst down | got the beat!! Overall Lincoln had a very fine season as the team pinned and decisioned their way to a 6 and 2 record. Coach Lessmeier also achieved a personal milestone as his career coaching record surpassed the 500 mark with a 30-29 win over Monticello. Lincoln's wrestlers seemed to be cursed by the rat- ings game this year. Davidson started and ended the regular season rated 1 by the Des Moines Register. But Tim’s hopes for a state birth were pinned at sec- tionals in an overtime wrestleback match. Lincoln's other rated man was senior captain Gary Genkel. Dur- ing the season, Gary was rated as high as 5th. But, at the district meet, Gary had to settle for 3rd after being defeated in a heart-breaking match by Steve Helle. Other LHS matmen who qualified for districts were Jim Zaruba and Craig Proctor. Zaruba, who had an on again, off again season, placed 4th behind some tough competition at 126. Proctor, our man at 138, brought the fans to their feet as he scored a fall with 3 seconds left to qualify for state. On the mat at Vets, Craig didn’t fare so well as he was defeated in both of his matches. But Craig can't feel too bad, as the two wrestlers who defeated him took lst and 3rd in the state. Last November when girls basketball practice start- ed, there was a lot of talk about the team placing high in the conference — maybe win the conference championship. Lincoln was the only team to return 7 letterwinners in the conference. This year's team lackec playing an entire game with total concentra- tion. The girls would play 16 minutes of hard ball but wouldn't finish the game with that determination. Al- though the girls record was 7-7 in the conference and 9-10 overall, the games they lost were really close. The first game of the season was a big win for the gals. They squeezed passed Durant 76-73 after com- ing from a 17 point deficit at the halftime. They trav- eled to Preston for their first conference game and were defeated by 35 points. Being disappointed, the gals knew they had a chance to get back at them. For sectionals, the Lincoln squad traveled to Durant to take on Bennett for the first round. They were fired up to go at Bennett, but again, they only had full con- centration for part of the game. The gals did come back within four points, but it just wasn't enough. During the season, there were some individual re- cords broken: best field goal percentage of an entire game was 6 out of 6, 100%, by Kathy Gutwiler; most free throws in a row, 18, and best free throw percent- age for a single game, 10 for 10, 100%, by Lisa Kurth; and most rebounds in a single game, 18, and most re- bounds in one season was 172 by Sally Weber. The game started off looking like they were going to pull it off with a win, but the three-point shot was the turning point. Lincoln tried to use the same advantage but still came up short. The boys had a really good year before sectionals. They ended up 10-4 in the conference which put them in third place. Scott Jackson was chosen Ist team All- Conference and Mark Doser Honorable Mention. Over all, they had a 12-8 record. The Lincoln boys team will have everyone back — all of the starting five plus all of the bench. The basketball team was like the baseball team this year. There was only one senior. At the banquet, Daren Lehrman got the name of the Lone Senior. Even though Daren didn’t get to play much, he still worked hard and had a lot of team spirit. The J.V. squad didn't have an overall good season, but Mr. Koering praised them for the hard work and determination. Next year the Lincoln boys will be hard to stop. Everyone enjoyed the trip and cher- ished the last moments together as a class. JACK’S FEED AND GRAIN, INC.
