Just as everything else is going up, so did the lunches at school increase. The cost of food and the reduction in government commodities is the reason for the increase. In order to break ‘‘even”’, the school has to stay within a certain average. They try to hold an average yearly balance, and so the cost of a lunch will vary from day to day. Since government commodities were reduced, the school has to go out on the open market and buy goods themselves which keep growing higher. They also have to figure in the electricity, time of cooks, and milk in the cost of a lunch. Sandwiches were also limited because of the increas- ing price of bread. Some students could probably eat half of a loaf of bread or more; then lunches would have to be increased again. There is a free-lunch program that the government sets up for families to apply for, but depends on the size of the family and their income.
