Fa ee + = as ee or hat (oy With the Bond issue vote on Decem- ber 6, 1977, the high school at Stan- wood will never be the same. The bond issue called for the tear- ing down of the McKinley wing com- monly called the Jr. High and replac- ing it with new band, chorus, art, and administrative rooms. On the other end of the school (the east side) there will be the addition of six classrooms. Also the area where the band room is will be a wrestling room, and enlarged boys and girls locker rooms will be included. Construction on the six classrooms onstruction began April 24, 1978, with the tearing down of the Jr. High being scheduled for May 30. We will all miss the old McKinley building, but when we think of those new facilities we've got to admit that it sounds pretty good. Construction workers working on construction of the six classrooms off of the high school Below — The New Look NEW REPLACES OLD The students and faculty at Lincoln will finally be getting the track and field they have long been waiting for. On September 13, 1977 the constitu- ents of Stanwood and Mechanicsville voted to sell three school owned houses to pay for the cost of rebuilding the foot- ball field and constructing a new 400 meter track. It would also pay for new bleachers on the home side and moving the old home bleachers to the visitor's side. Construction began in early November and was to be completed by spring for the track season. But because of bad weather it was not. The project will hope- fully be completed for the football season in the fall. A Z j j Z y 4 4 J y j | tA Z Z g Ce. Se ARKANSAS 1978 The night after graduation to most seniors means parties and getting a lot of sleep. Not so for the Lincoln class of 1978. At 12:30 on May 21st, well actu ally May 22nd, they departed for their Class trip to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. The first day spent mainly riding the bus. Although the scenery in Arkansas was spectacular, it did make everyone a little grumpy riding 15 hours ona bus. When everyone arrived at the resort, most of the time was spent shopping for food or swimming. With everyone being tired the beds really felt good that night. The next day you couldn't have asked for better weather, most was spent most of the time in the water, either boating, Swimming, or water skiing. Believe everyone had the burns to prove it. Night time was spent with sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. Kirkton, Mrs. Grimmand, Mr. Proctor checking on those who were sick from the sun. Later on there were a few late night skinny dippers. The seniors are interviewed and chosen by Mr. Wendel while they are juniors. There are 15 inthe class. This year as a new idea, the interior design class helped to pick out the furnishings for the house. With the help of some people and businesses from Mechanicsville and Stanwood supplying some of the needed materials and services for the house, the building and trades house has been a success once again. Don’t look at the camera, just keep your eye on what you're doing! She believes in music! Should | smile? Kristin and her American family: Shirley, Kris, Matt, Lori, Susie, and Lou Grimm All the way from Basel, Switzerland, came a happy-go-lucky girl, Kristin Metzner, one of Lincoln's two foreign exchange students. Kristin's American family was Mr. and Mrs. Louis Grimm and family. Kristin kept herself busy during the year with such courses as American lit, educational aide, typing, art, biology, government, advanced algebra and later advanced math, American history, P.E. and beginning clothing. Kristin's extra-curriculars included volleyball, basketball, track, and a part in ‘‘Get Smart, ’ the spring drama pro- duction. For hobbies, Kristin enjoys art, crafts, and skiing. When she returns to Switzerland, she will complete two more years of school and then possibly go on to college there after that. When questioned about what she liked most about America, Kristin remarked, ‘‘Happy Joe’s pizza!” Good luck to you, Kristin, in the future from all of us at LHS. We hope your stay in America was enjoyable. Caught ya’ in the act! What's so funny? Lighting up the halls of LHS this year was our other foreign student, the little Spaniard with her dancing Spanish eyes, and ringing laughter, Belen Sainz de Vicuna from Madrid, Spain. Her American family was Mr. and Mrs. John Kuehnle and family. Besides goofing off, or eating at Happy Joe's you would find Belen keeping herself busy in school with gov- ernment, American history, advanced biology, art, chorus, advanced math, P.E. mythology, and drama. Besides this Belen found time to participate in track, basketball, speech contests, small group music contests, and the spring play, ‘‘Get Smart. ’ In her leisure time Belen can be found playing the piano which she has been at for eight years, playing the guitar, drawing and eating. Her plans upon returning to Spain are to take up veterinary medicine at a college in Madrid. Belen commented that her favorite American foods were pies and American style corn. She also remarked that America was too cold! LHS wishes you much success in all your endeavors, Belen, and we hope your stay in America has been an enjoyable one. ‘‘Looks like we Made It! ’ That sounds like something the Seniors would say after gradu- ation. Instead this was the theme for the Junior-Senior Prom. Lincoln's Prom was held at the Sheraton Inn in Cedar Rapids, Saturday April 22. We were welcomed by the Jun- ior Class President, John Money- penny. Kerry Koch, the Senior Class President, gave the response. After Jeff Schnipkow- eit gave the invocation it was time to eat. After our meal, Jeff Walshire and Jeff Schnipkoweit read the Junior Class Prophecy. Bruce Seehusen and Russ Bequeaith read the Senior Class Will. About this time the band, which was Locust, started to play. Even though they didn’t play the theme song they played some good music. At 10:30 an early bus left to take the people who didn't want to stay back home. The other bus left at 12:30. Usually after Prom a movie is held at the Tipton Theatre. This year the Juniors decided to try something different. They rented the Tipton Country Club. After Prom you could go there and play cards or pool, or even get the teachers together and play charades! Prom, as always, turned out to be one of the most special mem- ories of the year. The junior class officers have a very hard job — that of organizing a prom for the junior and senior classes. Committees are usually appointed but it is up to the officers to be sure the committees are working. The junior class officers still have the job of organizing money making projects, class float, etc. to add to their burden. The senior class officers have probably the hardest job of all class officers. Senior class trip must be worked on year round. Gradua- tion invitations, colors, and a theme must be decided upon. This is a big job when you have to satisfy 50-60 people and everybody wants their own way since it is their last year in school. The job of the class officers is hard and a sigh of relief is given when the year is over. Most officers will say ‘never again’ but return the next year to do it all over again. ‘we SENIOR CLASS: V. Candidates chosen by the student body ahead of time, were Roxanne Ruchotzke, Kerry Koch, Mary But ler, Bruce Seehusen, Carol Pruess, Russell Bequeaith, Nancy Weber, and Kent Williams. The 76-77 queen and king, Lynn McCullough and Steve Flockhart, along with the ten year queen of 1967-68, Wanda Farrington, were present to help celebrate in the festivities. During homecoming week, the students showed their school spirit by partaking in special dress-up days. One day it was pajama day; another was 50's day. Hat day was next and of course Friday was black and white day. There was much enthusiasm shown as the whole football team and coaches, along with the student body and some teachers partici- pated in the effort to bring out school spirit With the dawning of Thursday, Octo- ber 6, came the parade at Mechanic- sville. The magic of the carni- val lures the main young girl, Lili, to the lights of the big tent There she meets Marco the Magnificent and becomes entranced with his magic. She yearns to be part of the carnival but is a failure at everything she tries, until she meets Carrot Top and his puppet friends from the puppet show. With Lili’s help the pup- pet show becomes the major attraction. Paul, the puppetmaster, falls in love with Lili but cannot express his feelings because he is full of self-pity. However, when Dennis Hedlund became the new head coach this past year, new ideas spread throughout the basketball season. The team members shared in his enthusiasm making the season a rewarding and enjoyable one. The team lacked in experience with Senior Russ Bequeaith being the only returning letterman. Russ led the team with a 12.6 game point average and 169 season rebounds. He was selected most valuable player with help from best defensive player Rick Weber and Bruce Seehusen who led the team with 28 assists. You earn a letter by a point system. When you place in competition Madea esha a i i you earn a certain number of points depending on where you placed. You have to accumulate so many points before you can receive a letter. There are two letters; a J.V. or minor letter and a major letter. It takes less points to earn a minor letter so it is smaller than a major letter. In sports the letters are in the shape of a ‘‘L.’’ In music they are in the shape of a lyres. This gathering was called to recognize probationary, reg ular, and graduate members, who receive this honor, in front of friends and relatives. To get into National Honor Society, a sophomore must have a grade point aver age of 3.0 for 3 consecutive semesters. Even if you have 3.0, get- ting all the way in the door depends on the graduate members voting you in. Once in, you must maintain that 3.0 or else you are dropped. A junior, that isn’t in the society, must have 2 con- secutive semesters of 3.0 grade point average. Other than having a 3.0 grade point average, four other requirements have to be met. These are Scholar- ship, Service, Leadership, and Char- acter. Scholarship means having grades that amount to a 3.0 or better. Leadership is to guide others, having the courage and strength to say ‘‘no’’ or '’yes’ ’ decisively at a crucial moment. Service is what an individual does to aid the school, such as sports, band, chorus, etc. Character is how an individual behaves. Character is more lasting than wealth, fame, or power; it's the constant striving to uphold high ideals and honesty in daily con- tacts with others. All these things have a lot to do with being a National Honor Society mem- ber. No matter what you do after grad- uation, just being a member will affect the rest of your life.
