A feeling of excitement, energy, and a sense of love A feeiing of oneness between the athletes, artists, musicians, . between all . The faculty, and the students who make each new year, unlike the years past. We dedicate this album to all of the individuals at Lincoln, because they are the hits which made the year 1977, one of Lincoln's Greatest. Hits of sack oF sie MINU ree (HOME DOWN | Soee® Sets J SECONDS | fq visitor TO GO t OTR) During the week of homecoming, the spirit of Lincoln students rose even higher. Two weeks before, voting for candidates was done. Chosen were Lynn McCullough, Steve Flockhart, Janis Crist, Stan Roush, Annette Unruh, Mike Doser, Kaylene Jilovec, and John Licht. The cheerleaders set aside each day of Homecoming week for something ‘special.’ Monday brought students coming to class with their clothes inside out. Tuesday we reverted back to the fifties with our Brylcream and bobbie socks. Wednesday was clash day. Thursday brought Minnie Mouse and other such characters as this was masquerade day. Of course, Friday was black and white day. Most students participated at least one day of the week as did a lot of teachers. Throughout the preceding days, students could be seen running around Stanwood with packages of napkins in their possession. What else could this be for but float building! The Pep Club was offering a $100 grand prize for the top float. Thursday brought the Homecoming Parade in Stanwood with the judges thinking hard as to who would be lucky enough to win the $100 prize. Once the crowd moved to the football field, the bonfire was started despite the wind at the time. The cheerleaders and the football guys led cheers. The candidates’ skit was given on the football field. It turned out to be a spoof of the Lincoln-Olin game which was to take place Friday night. There were players, Coach Kirkton, Mr. Jensen, referees, cheerleaders, and even a marching band for the half-time show. After the skit, Coach Kirkton introduced the team. Then the 1976-77 Homecoming King and Queen were announced: Lynn McCullough and Steve Flockhart. Lynn and Steve were to preside over the remaining Homecoming events. Danny Jilovec and Kimberly Robinson had been chosen as the prince and princess. Spirit held through to the big game Friday, October 15. The Lincoln Panthers faced the Olin Lions for the game. At halftime the junior class was named as the winner of the $100. The float consisted of a large skunk with a moving tail which also sprayed when lifted, the theme - ‘Olin Isn't Worth a Scent. ' Lincoln won their game against Olin, 34-0. The game was followed by a dance at the high school gym. The Fourth Estate provided music for the evening. Mini Courses ran throughout the week of March 14-18. lowa weather, being as it is, questioned the minds of many as they set out each day. It held good though till the end of the week, when the raindrops began to fall, drenching the daring who braved the outdoors in various courses. The hikers, fishermen, and horsebackriders, were safe because their courses fell early in the week, but the tale of the campers and canoers was a different story. There were those who didn't have to worry either way, taking courses at the school such as candlemaking, shirtpainting, and ping pong. Then there were those who tried improving their skills at bowling, rollerskating, and miniature golf, the latter of which spent an hour and a half sitting in the bus along Highway 30. But a special tribute goes out to those thirty students who bicycled 254 miles into southern Iowa and back. Back row, | tor - D. Schnipkoweit, R. Dains, D. Coppess, D. Kurth, C. Ropa, K. This year we really had some smart looking girls to represent the Lincoln Chapter. The candidates were Denise Cook, Tammy Thomson, and Carol Pruess. This year we had one girl, Cindy Hay, from Olin since the Lincoln Chapter consists of both schools. On the night of February 26, about 10 o'clock, Tom Poduska introduced the candidates and their escorts. The moment was about to happen . Carol Pruess was chosen as the '77-'78 Sweetheart. Carol was given her jacket and one dozen red roses. Left to right bottom - Dan Driscoll, Denise Cook, President Jeff Odeen, '76-'77 Sweetheart Kaylene Jilovec, Tammy Thomson, Dennis Coppess. Top tow - Delbert Coppess, Cindy Hay, '77-'78 Sweetheart Carol Pruess, Jim Rouse. The Sweetheart represents the Chapter at various shows. She is chosen by the Chapter and if their fathers are engaged in farming. The Chapter selects the girls on personality and their farming experiences. “You Can’t Take It With You” Presented at Lincoln November 6 and 8 It took many long weeks, but on November 6, a group of hard working cast and crew members were ready to perform Moss Hart and George Kaufman's comedy, ''You Can't Take It With You. ’ Everyone enjoyed the production as well as the members of the cast enjoyed giving it. We wish that we could list everyone behind the scenes that helped, because it took many people to make the production a success. Mrs. Roxanne Hughes was this year’s director with Mr. Keith Lenz assisting. Both of these people were new at Lincoln this year, and did a fine job. Kay Robinson was the student director, Susan and Laura Broulik were the stage managers. The experience was one that many will remember because everyone worked so hard to make SOUTH PACIFIC a success. It was a success, but I'm sure the memories will probably not be of the work alone, but of the fun everyone had at rehearsals and during the performances. Helix? These were some. of the questions students and teachers were asking as prom night came closer and closer. We did get a band that night by the name of ''Magic. ' The Lincoln Prom was held at the Roosevelt Royale in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on April 992 We were welcomed by the Junior Class President, Kerry Koch. Then the Senior Class President, John Licht, gave the response. We were all happy to learn that Dee Ann Glover, Junior Class Vice President, was ready to give the invocation which meant we were ready to eat. After our meal, John Licht and Mike Doser read the Senior Class Will. Bruce Seehusen then read the Junior Class Prophecies. The junior class had also managed to get some baby pictures of the senior class and posted them along with each senior's senior picture. The band started to play about this time and one of their songs they played was the theme song 'Dream On. ' About midnight the Lincoln buses pulled out from the Roosevelt Royale and headed towards home. The night was still young and was to bring more excitement. Prom turned out to be one of the fondest memories of the year. She was Lincoln's foreign exchange student who came to us from Einbeck, Germany. Ute'’s American family was Dr. and Mrs. Jeptha Randolph and family. Ute was a very busy person this year at Lincoln High. Her academic courses consisted of Home Eco- nomics, Advanced Algebra, English, American His- tory, beginning woods, band, chorus, and P.E. Among her extra-curricular activities were volley- ball, basketball, jazz band, and acting in the spring play. Ute spent most of her spare time reading books or just taking walks. When she returns to Einbeck, she will continue her schooling there. LHS hopes to have made her stay enjoyable and wishes her the best of luck in the future. The team came through with 7 wins against 10 losses. This is the most wins by a Lincoln team in volleyball. An offensive attack was developed and used very effectively at times. The elements we must improve on is amsestancy on our play and better anticipation in playing defensively. Although the seniors will be missed, we return several letterwinners that should make Lincoln's 1977 volleyball team very competitive. There were flashes of very fine play, but there were also times when turnovers and poor passes and shot selection doomed us. However, one feature of the Squad remained the same, and that was the overall attitude. With everyone back, our girls squad should radically improve on their 4-14 record. 'As the coach of Lincoln girls basketball for the last 10 seasons, I would like to thank this year's squad for their high level of cooperation and for being young people that I have been proud to be associated with. Good job girls and good luck! F com 4a Cuan OW CONFERENCE CO-CHAMPS The Panthers brought home the conference championship as they compiled a 9-1 mark for the season. The squad was led by the 7 seniors with Stan Roush and Steve Flockhart making first team All-Conference, Russ Bequeaith second team, and Alex Taylor third team. Balance was the key to the success of this team as in each game a different individual took the spotlight as the key to victory. Solid defense, balanced scoring, and rebounding were instrumental to the overall 13-5 record attained. The Underclassmen will challenge last year's starters and this should improve the 1977-78 team. These girls must continue to practice their shooting and other fundamentals to make them still better ball players.’ The girls had a very memorable and exciting year! They had celebrations for winning and reaching certain goals, and had a fun and educational experierice during the course of the basketball season! They hope to improve next year and we should warn the other teams that they are going to have some pretty stiff competition coming after them! GREAT year girls, good luck! J.V. Boys Basketball The J.V. boys had a very exciting and rewarding season. Their season record showed that they were a tough team to beat! Their record was 10 wins and 7 losses, which was great! Coach Hedland had these comments on his 76-77 team: ‘The junior varsity basketball team in compiling a 10-7 record showed excellent development. The greatest improvements came in two areas, offensive team play and team defense. Three players averaged 10 or more points per game and the defense allowed 38.2 points per game. There were two basic problems to cope with during the 1976-1977 wrestling season. First, an over-all lack of experience, exhibited by the fact that only two varsity squad members had a full year's previous experience. Second, the squad was quite small, usually around 13 or 14. The seniors came through for us though, and in all 5 varsity wrestlers finished with winning records. This year served to install some essential desire to win and provided some valuable experience. Increasing experience and hard work in the off-season should provide some good wrestlers for the up-coming year. We need to overcome the lack of commitment and the unwillingness to wrestle JV if we are to become a truly competitive squad. It would be a great boost to the program if we could get our freshmen some competitive experience at the sub-varsity level. In order to do this we need people who are willing to stay with the program despite not making the varsity squad. Overall, in spite of the 3-8 dual record, I feel that this season provided us with some definite benefits and successes that are not evident in the record. Hopefully the benefits of this year can be reaped in the upcoming seasons. - Coach Lessmeier Girls Track The 1977 girls track team members are: Sitting (l-r) Roxanne Ruchotzke, Sandy Unruh, Karen Havel, Lori Grimm, Barb Ruchotzke, Denise Cook, Wendy Unruh, Sandi Sander, and Nancy Weber. These coupled with a second place at the districts and 7th in the state meet, mean a real feeling of accom- plishment. Hopefully these successes will stimulate greater effort and greater achievement next year. They provided the student body with several privileges - especially SSG. SSG was made available for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students if they could handle the responsibility. The pop machine was again made available to the students and at times it proved to be a problem for those who couldn't learn the rules connected with its use. The student phone was also available for use off and on during the year but was finally removed toward the end of the year because of misuse. Homecoming was again sponsored by Student Council. Window soaping in the two communities for Homecoming was led by Student Council, also. In November the Student Council sponsored a gymnastic assembly by performers from the Nissen Corporation. The Christmas movie was also provided by Student Council. This year's movie was American Graffiti. In the spring the Jazz Band and Swing Choir provided an assembly for the students. Student Council also provided money for the boy's and girl's track teams to go to the State meet in which they participated. The Activity Board in the main hall was to be kept up by the Student Council. Ute Steinig, the foreign exchange student, was presented with an Iowa flag provided by the Student Council. The Council also chose two members to represent the student body at Board Policy meetings. Sec.-Treas. Cindy Yock Advisor Mr. Linder PEP CLUB This year's Pep Club was very instrumental in the successes that our athletic teams achieved this year. The Pep Club sponsored pep buses to all away football and basketball games. Three buses were taken to the East Dubuque and Preston foot- ball games. Those riding to East Dubuque stopped in Happy Joe's for pizza on the way to the game. They also sponsored a full week of activities the week of homecoming. These activities included clash day, black and white day, 50's day, and dress-up day. The Pep Club helped to promote school spirit in school and at the athletic events. Mr. Epperly was the sponsor. Mr. Robert Anderson came as a first year teacher and in that first year molded a very fine music department. The mixed choir produced a very full sound which gave them a II rating at contests. Girls Treble Choir had a very successful year which was proven with a I rating from all three judges at contests. Mr. Anderson reorganized the swing choir this year, they performed at local public functions during the year, and in the spring went on tour with the Jazz band. Middle (1 to r) Shelly Flockhart, Susan Broulik. Front (1 to r) Laura Seeley, John Licht. For the first time in many years, Lincoln came home from Large Group District Speech Contests with Straight ''I's. Contests were held January 22, in Cedar Rapids at Jefferson High School. Those participating in the One Act Play entitled, ''Mr. Flannery's Ocean ' were John Licht as Mr. Flannery, Susan Broulik as Mrs. Pringle, Gary Taylor as Mr. Morrison, Shelly Flockhart as Mrs. Morrison, Laura Seeley as Mrs. Klapington, and Pam McAmis as Maude. Duets included: Shelly Flockhart and Kay Robinson in ''Butterflies Are Free,'' Laura Seeley and Cam Coppess in '’Androcles and the Lion,’’ and Stan Roush and Bruce Seehusen in, ‘'Death of a Salesman. ' As nerves intensified we went onward to State Contests held February 5 at Muscatine. Everyone put out their best, but the competition was really tough and I's were hard to get. Even though there were few unexpected surprises, the One Act Play received I ratings from all 3 judges. Stan Roush and Bruce Seehusen received a I rating for their duet. Shelly Flockhart and Kay Robinson received a II and Laura Seeley and Cam Coppess also received a II. Congratulations. Back (1 to r) Cam Coppess, Bruce Seehusen, Stan Roush, Shelly Flockhart. Front (1 to r) Kay Robinson, Laura Seeley. Individual Speech Individual Speech Contests are very different from Large Groups, since the conte stant must face the judges totally alone. This tension wears the nerves thin, but is good experience, and very rewarding. This year Individual District Speech contests were held February 26 at Durant. Those participating were Matt Polhamus in Radio News Announcing receiving a I, Susan Broulik in Interpretive Prose receiving a II, Robin Seeley, Literary Program receiving a II, Laura Seeley, taking Literary Program I and Interpretive Poetry I, Shelly Flockhart, Literary Program I, and Pam McAmis received a I in Interpretive Prose, and Kenlyn Kruse received a lin Mime. Onward to the State Speech Contests, held March 19 in Ottumwa, Iowa. Judging was very stiff and there was a lot of competition. Matt Polhamus, Laura Seeley, and Shelly Flockhart received II ratings, as did Kenlynn Kruse. Pam McAmis received a1. This group plus Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hughes, and our coach Mr. Keith Lenz and his wife stayed over night at the Holiday Inn and celebrated the day's triumphs. This ended the day with a bang! Congratulations, Lincoln's proud of you. Back row (1 to r) Matt Polhamus, Susan Broulik, Pam McAmis, Robin See- ley, Laura Seeley. This year's publications class consisted of junior and senior boy and girls (only one boy on the staff) who were interested in writing articles for the school newspaper and or publishing the 1977 yearbook. The year began with Mrs. Lamont as the advisor, but when she resigned at mid-term Mr. Keyser took her place. This year the editor of the newspaper staff was Linda Weber. It was her job to assign articles to be written by members of the class for next week's paper. Shelly Flockhart was the editor of the yearbook. Her duties con- sisted of assigning people to design the layout of certain pages of the yearbook. She also proofread all pages before they were sent to the company, corrected mistakes, and often did layouts herself. John Licht and Laura Seeley were the photogra- phers and it was their duty to see that all pictures were taken of each activity, group, and game. John Licht and Laura Seeley were the photographers for the 1977 yearbook and newspaper. GOOD JOB GIRLS! Did you go to a Junior High basketball, football, or wrestling event last year? Or did you go to a pep assembly? Well if you did then you probably saw one of the girls in the pictures to the left yelling her brains out and cheering the team on to another victory! I don't know where they get all their pep but I do know that if everyone in the crowd was as peppy and yelling as loudly as them then we would probably yell the other team right out of the stands!!! The eighth grade compiled the only victory, a 16-8 decision over Clarence- Lowden in the second game of the year. The team averaged 12.6 points per game offensively, while allowing 25.1 points per game defensively. The team consisted of 13 eighth graders, all of whom earned junior high letters. Many of the eighth graders are large people with good potential for high school football. The seventh graders look forward to another year of learning in the junior high ranks. Coach Lessmeier had these comments concerning the season: ‘' Although the Jr. High didn't win any meets, I was happy with the improvement and impressed with the 7th grade. The improvement during the season was evident in the scores of the dual meets with Lisbon.'' '' As far as our future goes, I am very happy with the seventh graders. Four of our top five winners, including our two leading scores came from the seventh grade. The eighth grade should provide Lincoln with 2 or 3 varsity wrestlers next year and they will be missed by the Jr. high. ’ The 1976-77 Jr. High Wrestlers are First row (left to right) Jeff Davidson, and Phil Railsback. They won the Wapsi Conference meet and the Solon Invita- tional. During the whole season they only lost one meet. I think some of next year's new freshmen should be a big help to the high school track team. I'm hoping to see a lot of returning track members, and another suc- cessful season. Coach Kris Plueger. This year's boys track squad was small in size but high in spirit. During the season there was a total of 7 track meets. We won the Conference meet which was the highlight of the season.
