ZENISCHEK 28 BUILDING TRADES One of the new classes at Lincoln for the 1975-76 school year was B T, which stands for Buildings and Trades. Mr. Wendel, who taught the class of 15 Senior boys said the construction went quite well. But if you talk to the guys, they'll tell you that things didn't always go as they were planned. They encountered such things as a wall that eats tools, finding a new use for a can and a stick, and setting a World's Record for pounding 17 nails in one square inch of board. But overall there weren't any major problems. Most of the guys said that although they had to work hard they liked the class and learned alot about carpentry. From Bergen, Norway came a blonde haired, green eyed girl named Lill Karlsen to LHS, Her new American family was with Mr. and Mrs. Dean Tenley. During the school year Lill occu- pied herself with American history, contemporary affairs, physed, cho- rus, media now and home ec. She also enjoyed playing basketball, tennis and volleyball. Her future plans are to finish off her last year of college and then take some more schooling under a traveling agency course. Good luck, Lill, from LHS! McVILLE GRAIN CO., Mechanicsville, la., 432-6582 A new face walked the Lincoln halls imported from Alebaek, Den- mark, Lis Hyllemose. She made her home with Mr. and Mrs, Robert Dauber and family. Lis kept herself busy with American history, sewing, art, physed, drama and Spanish, In her free time she enjoyed swimming, basketball and playing the piano. Her future plans are to finish her last two years of college and then transfe r to another university to stu- dy a language. When asked how Lis liked her stay in America, she commented on the old fashion and democratic ways we have. But overall she had an enjoy- able time. LHS wishes you the best of luck! RUSTIC VILLA, Stanwood, Ia., 945-8596. 31 a See Ppa re oe +e rr ee nO Mer PROM On Saturday, April 24, something happened to the Juniors and Seniors of Lincoln Community High School. They got all dressed in their best formal wear and then took a 2 1 2 hour-long ride to the Little Amana Restaurant. Why did they do this? It was Prom night, that's why. When they got to Little Amana, Junior Class President Janise Crist gave the welcome and Senior Class President Vic Randolph gave the response. Mike Doser gave the In- vocation after which the restaurant's employees served a buffet-style dinner. When the dinner was over, John Licht read the Junior Class Prophe- cy, Rick Boots read the Senior Class Will. Music and dancing followed pro- vided by a band named Kriss Kross. They played the prom theme, Stairway to Heaven . Then rock and roll was played the rest of the night. At midnight we loaded back onto the busses for the long ride home. on ne Fam ae wt a YOO e444 644444 ior ooeeee e+e +++ eee 444 0¢ 0? 24,9 4,4 2 +7 a eo O ne ea = a Where are you guys going on your Sen ior trip? Why, to Six Flags, of course! This common question was asked many times of a Lincoln Senior and the reply before April of 1976 was quite correct, or so we thought. A slight change in plans caused the class of '76 to enjoy a weekend in Des Moines instead. Was anyone upset? The entire class was upset, but one can't go to Six Flags if one doesn't have a bus to take you there. Right? Right!! During the year plans were made SENIOR TRIP to attend Senior Weekend (May 7,8, and 9) atSix Flags and St. Louis. The class got busy raising money by selling T-shirts, decals, and plaques. With the help of the cooks, they also held a Chili-Soup Supper on March 5 with a Sock- Hop afterwards hosted by a couple of KWWL radio announcers. The evening was a success and the Sen- iors thought they were well on their way to Six Flags. The time was getting nearer and final arrangements were getting put in order. Everything was going great until two members of the class went to charter the buses and they were already filled for that particular weekend. Hot tem- pers, lots of complaining and dis- appointed people still couldn't change the situation. Six Flags was out of the question. Now what do we do? A class meeting was called and af- ter discussion and arguments it was decided to venture to Des Moines and visit Adventureland instead. On May 8th at 8:30 two buses of Seniors and sponsors headed for the Ramada Inn in Des Moines. We arrived approximately at 11:30 and unloaded and got settled into our rooms, After exploring the ho- tel and eating lunch they divided into three groups. One went shop- ping at the Merle Hay Center, an- other attended the History Farms and the third stayed and made use of the swimming pool at the Ramada. That night some stayed and went swimming while others attended movies or did what they pleased. In the wee hours of the morning many were still wide awake but the next day they paid for their fun of the night before. Sunday was spent at Adventureland. Tired people went on rides and en- joyed the park until 3:00 when the buses headed for good 'ol home. a: GRADUATION P 7 oy? ae aa ‘ a) ha The Class of 1976 carefully listening as Mr. Proctor announces the speaker for Commencement exercises. r- EFT 7Y Il Upper Right Comer: Dr. George Lamore from Wesleyan College addressing the class and the public attending graduation. The time 2:30 and the place is down- town Mechanicsville. Why are these facts important? Because they are the time, place and date for the '75 Homecoming parade. The Senior class won the float competition with the theme They say they're win- ning but they're Lion , This year the apathy ran high throughout the classes and organizations because only four classes chose to have floats. The homecoming game started out with the parade of queen. The most important part of Homecoming, the game, started. The Panthers' oppo- nent this year was the Lions from Olin, The Panthers started off with full head of steam. At the end of the first quarter of play the Pan- thers were ahead 14-0, Throughout the last three quarters of play the Panthers lost their steam and lost Homecoming 27-14, HEY RE SINNT? Is it February 21? March 19? April 2? or April 9? When someone asks you the question you really don't know what to say. Because of the many conflicts it was cancelled about 3 times. But, when April 9th rolled around everyone kept their fingers crossed that there wouldn't be anything to cancel it again. The band Shatter started playing at 8:00 and everybody started their boogie routine. At about 10:00 the 1976 candidates and escorts came out on the floor. Kevin Fisher announced the new Sweetheart while Tami Rochau handed her the roses. Kaylene's face was filled with tears as she heard her name called. The rest of the night went pretty well and when 12:00 rolled around every- body was pretty well boogied out. So they went home for a good night's sleep. “THE MATCHMAKER” Horace Vandergelder--Gary Taylor Cornelius Hacker--Bruce Seehusen Barnaby Tucker--Randy Wagner Joe Scanlon--Jeff Odeen Malachi Stack--Mark Kuehnle Cabman--Danny Wagner Rudolph--Kent Williams August--Kerry Koch Jeremy--Jim Rouse Dolly Levi--Susan Broulik Irene Molley--Chris Zenishek Minnie Fay--Laurie Weber Ermemgarde--Rhonda Hegarty Miss Van Huysen-=Pam McAmis DVM. But just because the ball is losing, you don't have to stop giving them support. Your cheering for them is going to help them whether you're 20 points ahead of 20 behind. Look at Iowa. They had a very bad start this year and lost 5 in a row, but the fans didn't give up on them, they kept on going to the games and cheered for their team. So just because our team loses a little too often, don't give up on them. Keep cheering for them and who knows, they might win the conference again one of these days. By Kevin Koob, Coache's Comments: I was disappointed in the win-loss record but, I was pleased that a lot of kids learned and progressed as individuals in football and in charac- ter. '' When asked i f there were any rea- sons for the unimpressive record, Wendel said, We didn't have some of the quick- ness needed but we lost a few by just 1 or 2 points. The Panthers were 1-9 on the season with the only victory coming against Cen- tral City. The reason for the sea- sons outcome was that the Pan- thers forfeited one to three match- es every meet, These forfeits were deciding factors of several meets, To aid in the wrestling program the team had a new assistant coach--Eric Spargrove. By looking at the teams record you would think that nobody on the team did anything. This is not true. This year Lincoln put 14 wrestlers in the finals of 4 tourna- ments (3 in Tipton, 4 in Alburnett, 6 in Regina and 1 in Midland). This is the first time this has hap- pened. In three of the four tourna- ments Lincoln has as many cham- pions as the team that won but didn't have enough depth to place very high. Brian Coppess qualified for dis- tricts by placing second in sec- tionals. He was also named the most improved wrestler, Tom Platner and Vic Randolph were elected co-captains by the team. Vic Randolph was also named the most valuable wrestler. Coach Rick Elliott commented, Outstanding leadership by our Seniors and the electrofying en- thusiasm expressed by the team amounted to a memorable season despite our poor dual meet rec- ord, Out 17 medals was an all- time high, indicating our strong individual strength. I was pleased to be a part of this year's team, J. V. FOOTBALL 775 The JV Football coaches for 1975 are Dennis Hedlund left and Eric Sparrgrove right. Lincoln's JV Football team was small in size, with only 18 mem- bers, but the little Panthers were big on enthusiasum, The Panthers finished the season with a 4 and 2 mark, Their only loses came against a varsity team from East Central and against Midland in a 8 to 6 squeaker, This year's JV team was coached by two new energetic coaches. Coach Hedlund had these comments, The JV's 4-2 record reveals a bright fu- ture for Lincoln's football program, Even though injuries cut the roster from 21 to 15, including a number of starters and key personnel, utili- zing an exciting air attack and clutch defence continued to win games, ' Coach Sparrgrove had this to say, The 1975 Panther squad was made up of some young men who have demonstrated winning qualities this year and who will be the foundation for a winning season next year. The win-lose record this year suggests their winning abilities, but, more importantly, it exhibits their wil- lingness to learn, to work, and to be aggressive. This year's JV team was scrappy and energetic. Next year they will be bigger and more power- ful, but hopefully no less enthusi- astic, If they can retain their com- petitive spirit and improve their technical skills they will be a strong conference leader in '76, ' JV Football team First Row (L--R): C. To be good you need skill, teamwork and a lot of crowd backing, and this is the job of the cheerleaders, When these girls are chosen, they have made the commitment of spread- ing school spirit. This is quite a task, and it takes a lot of practice to get the cheers down, and a lot of new ideas to get everyone ex- cited. The cheerleaders at LHS can do their part, but it takes a school effort to really get it to- gether, Remember the Battle of the Sexes? It really showed how much spirit we have; at the end of the game the spirit had died. Does it have to be a contest ora close game before we can show our athletes we're proud of them? The season is longer than one game so show a little spirit for every game no matter how trivial it may seem to be. J. V. Lincoln didn't look to impressive this year at music contests by the ratings, but if you were to look closer at the other schools, they were comparably the same. Small Groups were held at Wilton, and this year proved to the students that everything really depends on the judge that you perform be- fore. A lot was expected of the participants in terms of quality, and it was the feeling of the students as well as of the directors, that the judges expected too much in the way of perfection for the high school level. If the ratings could ever lie, this year would have been the case because the Lincoln students performed well this year at contests, and they deserve fair credit for the fine effort they put forth. Andrew, Mrs. Lamont, D. Sloan. Changes... Publications class was full of them this last year. The first difference we noticed was our new sponsor, Mrs. Lamont. She has had a rough “breaking in year starting with the end of the NORTH CEDAR PRESS, our usual school paper. This brought up the problem of how and where we were going to publish our school news. The TIPTON-CONSERVATIVE and MOUNT VERNON SUN both of- fered us a page in their papers every two weeks, but which paper should we go to? Then the idea of a separate student paper came up. We had a representative come in to give us the details on cost and on how to set up the issues. It all sounded good to us so the Blooper was started. A lot of work goes into the Blooper , so to keep every- one informed on what's happening, we decided to take the page of- fered in both the Tipton and Mt. Vernon papers. When everyone isn't busy working on articles for the paper, you can probably find them working on a page for the annual. More work goes into putting togeth- er a good yearbook than just taking pictures, and writing who's in them. You have to space everything and coordinate a central theme throughout the book, Everyone has an important part, writing, organ- izing the layouts, and taking the pictures. We had a few problems in meeting dead-lines. There are always problems in everything you do, but they can always be solved with a little work. And just by looking through this book you can see the work put in to it, and what a great job everyone did! Publications Class: Changes? Yes, but we can work them out. Changes are meant to improve, and that is just what we did. Just ask anyone, (in class) it was a great year. This year's Lincoln Junior High wrestlers were as fine a group of young men as I have worked with. The next few years should see these young. wrestlers leading a highly successful program. Coach Rick Elliott, This years, track team has been one of the more success- ful squads that we have had. We won the conference meet along with every meet that we had at home. At Mount Vernon we came in second, too bad, it was only a dual. Solon and Wilton were two of our biggest meets and con- sidering the size of the other teams I was rather happy with one 3rd and 4th place. It was a real pleasure working with all the boys this year and I think that the high school has much in store for them. --R): B. Ki D. Taylor, J. Sheldon, R. Front Row (L--R): B. Armstrong, C. If some Tuesday or Thursday morn- ing you happen to walk into the main hall at Lincoln, you might hear a strange noise coming from downstairs, Is it the laboratory of Dr, Frankenstein? Or, maybe a bunch of mice having a mice party? Nope, it's neither, It's just the junior high band practicing one of the many selections they have. Under the direction of Mr, Bob Meyer they just can't go wrong. (Or can they???) Mr, Meyer sees a great future for these young composers, and hopes to see more participate in the program next year, Sponsored by: IOWA ELECTRIC, Mt. Vernon, lowa ee “ .
