LINCOLN Stanwood Mechanicsville Volume XJJJ a 3 — Wis si we, cuca teak W7t i... ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL ...the year Watergate plagued the daily newspapers. Tapes, transcripts, and testimonies involving tricky Dick were the top legal questions. All politicians were mistrusted and labeled crooks by the suspicious public. ...the year of the energy crisis. The land of plenty suddenly shifted to a land of shortage. The news hit home when LHS hot-rodders were forced to slow down to the snail's pace of 55 m.p.h. ...the year of war and peace in the Mideast. No one, including Kissinger, suspected what would happen next in the powder keg, ...the year that the farmers never had it so good! ...the year that STREAKING on college campuses replaced the traditional fad of swallowing goldfish. ...the year of broken records in sports. The end of the 81-game winning streak of the UCLA Bruins and their star, Bill Walton; Hank Aaron surpassing Babe Ruth's career record of 714 home runs; the Miami Dolphins capturing the Super Bow] for the second straight year; and the Boston Celtics winning the NBA play-offs. --.the year of THE EXORCIST, THE STING, and AMERICAN GRAFFITTI. .-.the year of The Streak by Ray Stevens. ON THE LOCAL LEVEI ...the year Sarah Crenshaw was a correct answer on the current events test! .-.the year that the LHS panthers racked up an undefeated season record of 8-0, and were named Mid East Conference Champs for the second year. .-. the year all activities were cancelled during Christmas vacation due to the energy crisis. .-.the year that the girl's bowling team placed twelfth in state. .-.the romantic year which called for the enactment of a Hands-Off Policy at LHS; second floor no longer being termed lover's lane, ... the year that PROM was held at the Highlander in Iowa City, thanks to some hardworking, persistent juniors and the administration. School busses provided the needed transportation, ...the year of both track teams (girls and boys) taking the conference title. ...the year of KAO in the pop machine, .-. the year of JEANS, JEANS, and JEANS!!! ...the year of 57 SUPER, GRADUATING, SENIORS!!!! Chirteen Years at Lincoln KINDERGARTEN 1961-62 Recognize any of these innocent, smiling faces? Believe it or not, here are the beginnings of the Class of 1974. Of course, many of these faces never completed their high school years at Lincoln, but there were others who came later to add to the class. Thirteen years later, these same (maybe not quite so innocent) kids completed their high school education and were turned loose into the world. Following their varied interests, each one traveled a separate road in search of their dreams, as the graduating classes before them. But what makes this group of individuals so spe- cial? They were the very first class to complete thirteen years at LHS, the two schools having com- bined in 1961. Way back in kindergarten, they played four-square during recess and mastered the art of tying their ox- fords. Through elementary, they learned to read and write, subconsciously developing their own per- sonalities. Junior High, although frightening at first, meant going to Stanwood with the big kids. Their freshman, sophomore, and junior years were spent in anxious anticipation of their senior year. This book is dedicated to the Class of 1974 so that they may remember their friends and all the activities of their year. First row: R,. Vickery, C. Krumm, B. Agne, Kendra Murfield, J. Hines, B. From Lincoln we say, Good Luck! Amo Vos Brightening the halls of Lincoln every day for the past year was Arno Vos. This tall blonde came to us from Nordhorn, Germany and made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Buell Jackson and brother, Loren. While attending Lincoln, Arno participated in basketball, L-Club, and annual staff. Outside of school, he particularly enjoyed caring for the calves, especially Ace, riding horses, and shooting pool. We from Lincoln wish him all successes in the future. They had an honor guard, a color guard, and also a new band director, Mr. Meyer. They had some great times, like attending the Oelwein Band Festival, marching in parades, and in Clinton on Halloween night, plus doing a fantastic job at our games. It wasn't all fun and games though, they had to get up pretty early to make practice at 7:00 in the morn- ing. They practiced long and hard to make their season the success it was. The highlights of the season of course, would be the second Conference title in a row for the Panthers, and the third in the seven year history of the conference. The undefeated season would stand-out as the second major goal of the 73 squad, and this was also accomplished by the Junior Varsity squad. Coming from behind three times to win the Midland game shows the ability of this team to never say die. The team very seldom lost its poise and always showed great sportsmanship in winning; never belittling its opponents while winning, but respecting them for their ability to play the game. The team was very coachable, never displayed jealousies, never looked for the easy way out but always did what was asked of them. So our hats are off to you, the Panthers of 1973. 28 Sponsored by: Yoder Feeds and Funks G Hybrids, Stanwood, 945-6661 Coach Jim Wendel Asst. Festiv- ities began Thursday evening in Mechanicsville with the annual bonfire and parade at 7:00. A per rally, under the direction of the cheerleaders, followed. Coach Jim Wendel introduced the entire squad and commented on the upcoming game. Up- on introduction, the Homecoming Queen candidate presented a short skit. The bonfire was then set ablaze while the cheerleaders and Panther fans chanted excitedly around it. Friday night proved to be even more exciting. Prior to game time, a resumé of their extra- curricular activities was reas as the candidates walked across the 50-yard line. Lincoln Home- coming Queen Candidates for 1973 were Patty Bunge, escorted by Larry Boesenberg; Wendy Miller, escorted by Loren Jackson; Tracey Petez man, escorted by Arno Vos; and Sally Scott, es- corted by Vance Haesemeyer. During the half- time activities, Patty was crowned queen by Jean Williams, 1972 Homecoming Queen. The football boys obtained a fantastic victory over the Olin Lions, 20-7. They were very proud, be- bause it was their third straight victory: Gage Memorial from Iowa City, entertained LHS from 9:00-12:00 in the high school gym- nasium. Colour My World was played to honor Queen Patty and her Court. Disregarding the “thunderclouds and half hour black-out, the dance was a big success. The season, itself, was successful as the seniors led the team to a 3rd place conference finish and a fine win-loss record. The team played some very fine ball as they maintained a 10 point spread between their offensive and defensive averages. Their defensive average was under 50 points and the players are proud of this. The team played well together, but when they got off to a bad start, they had difficulty holding it together. On the other hand, if they were behind a few points, they seemed very determined to get back at the other team. We finished third at the Midland Tournament. Seniors - Ritchie Randolph and Dennis Unruh both had successful seasons, Rich finishing the season 9-6-2 and Dennis finishing 10-7-1. Dennis Unruh and Brian Montz were elected as honorary co-captains for the year. Joe Unruh was impressive with a season's record of 13-5. Lincoln's outstanding wrestler for 1973-74 is Bill Butteris. Bill finished second in the sectional tournament right behind the State Cham- pion and was quite impressive in the District Wrestling Tournament, This year our young team learned to wrestle and what it felt like to win. Co-sponsored by: Curtis Truck Line Mechanicsville, 432-6639 62 Yule's DX Mechanicsville, 432-5251 “The Apple Cree”’ Spring of the year 1974 rang in the halls of Lincoln with the hilarious comedy The Diary of Adam and Eve and the touching tale of ''Passionella ., Under the direction of Mr. Schrag and Miss Campbell the plays from the musical The Apple Tree proved to be a success judging from the comments of those who saw it. Adam and Eve starred Dale Broulik and Wendy Miller, respectively with Mark Kuehnle adding the finishing touches as the Snake. The play began with Adam naming the creatures but Eve interfering and always being right. However they do manage to grow closer until Eve, of course, takes the fateful bite of the apple. From there, their life centers around their children until Cain kills Abel and leaves. Life con- tinues until Eve dies and leaves Adam to care for the flowers she always loved. 'Passionella , the story of chimney sweep stars Wendy Miller playing Ella. Its a story of another Cinderella turned beautiful by her fairy godmother. Passion- ella falls in love with Flip (Bill Broulik) and they live happily ever after. ' Passion- ella was the sight of alot of choreography and a large chorus. Chorus members were: Gary Taylor, Dale Broulik, Jim Rouse, Randy Kruse, Terry Kurth, Julie Cole, Kris Wenndt, Tracey Peterman. Walk-on-Cast were Beaulah Anderson, Carla Koch, and Shelly Flockhart. Besides all these people a lot of credit goes to the lighting and stage crew. The Apple Tree was a hit! In order to comply with the school board's policy and concern, all students attending the event rode busses provided by the school. Con- trary to everyone's first impression, the ride was an enjoyable experience. Once everyone was properly seated, Junior class president, Joy Svoboda gave the welcome with the response given by Senior class president Frosty Meyer. Brian Walshire asked the blessing. Dinner was served buffet style. It included a variety of salads and vege- tables, mashed potatoes and gravy, dinner rolls, ham, roast beef, and cup- cakes, Everything was absolutely de- licious, and there were no complaints of hunger. After the meal, Tom Donohue pre- sented the senior's prophecy prepared by the junior class. They failed to miss anyone! Each prophecy was perfectly suited for the individual, whether hum- orous or embarrassing. Following that, Frosty Meyer read the 1974 Senior Class Will . The seniors were more than happy to release themselves of their individual burdens, However, the recipients may not have been so overly pleased with their newly ac- quired endowments, But the juniors will have their chance next year. The rest of the evening was spent dancing. Music was provided by the very popular band, Chance. Their first song was Time in a Bottle, the theme of the evening. Many students not wishing to dance took advantage of the opportunity to tour the Highlander, Among a variety of odd occurrences was the appearance of two skinny-dippers in the pool. That will remain in the minds of the observers for a long time to come, Although an indoor pool existed, no one received a free bath, At the stroke of midnight, the stu- dents and their dates boarded the busses for the long journey home. The Hardacre Theatre in Tipton was rented by the junior class for all those desiring to go. ‘The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing starring Burt Reynolds, was showing, During the very wee hours of the morning, after eating at the several hosted breakfasts, everyone slowly and carefully climbed into bed. They were tired and exhausted, but it had been a fantastic evening. SENIOR TRIP May 12, 1974, dawned bright and early (3 a.m.) for 32 seniors and 4 sponsors as they boarded the bus for St. Louis. It was especially early for those night owls who bumbed around Stanwood all night and never went to bed. Right, guys?! Most people slept on the way down and, shaking off sleep, they ate break- fast in Hannibal. The next stop was Six Flags, where the group spent a thrilling day. The steep, swift drop of the Mine Train and the wet plunge of the Log Flume were the top attractions, with some seniors riding each five or six times! A relaxing dinner was hungrily devoured at Shakey's after the long, busy day. The night was even longer and more active at the motel, especially with the ringing alarm in the elevator. (Right, Vance ?!) Monday began with a breath-taking trip up inside the Gateway Arch, (Sorry the cable didn't break, Lar!) The sights were very interesting, as people looked like flyspecks and the edge of St. Louis stretched to the horizon. The group also toured the Old Cathedral and Court House in the morning. A visit to the zoo seemed quite appropriate that sunny afternoon, as the pictured bear represents one of the many sights. The girls also enjoyed the Jewel Box, designed with many types of flowers. The excitement of the night was provided by arather lop-sided game be- tween the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets, with the Mets vic- torious, 5-3. Then there was a confusing and mixed-up hunt for a coat. (How about it Dave, Jul, Patty, Mr. Linder, etc., etc.,!) Also included was a trip to the roof of the Downtowner by 6 wide-awake and industrious people. (We won't mention the unmentionables that got thrown out the window onto the street!) Although Tuesday brought rain, all enjoyed the tour of the Budweiser brewery and gift shop. Grant's Farm was cut short due to the rain and con- sequently all arrived safe and sound in Stanwood at 8:30 p.m, Home sounded good for the tired but happy travellers! But as we love so do we learn, I'll say good-bye. I'm not the first one or the last who had a thirst to leave the past. So while the summer's sun is shining, I'll say good-bye. For every star that falls to earth a new one glows, For every dream that fades away a new one growns,. When things are not what they would seem you must keep following your dream So while my heart is still believing, I'll say good-bye. Because another road is calling, I'll say good-bye.
