Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1973 volume:

“A Piece Of Our Lives” 1973 Lincoln Community School Stanwood - Mechanicsville, lowa In the autumn of nineteen hundred and seventy-two, a group of Lincoln students came together to work on a book of memories. Realizing that thoughts of the past are best remembered as happy times, they hoped to record the good times and happiness that came through meeting new people and learning new ideas. Now, as the summer of nineteen hundred and seventy- three draws near, we can say that we have done all we hoped to do. Our annual is complete. The story now closes on the class of seventy-three. Some will laugh, some will cry, and some will be happy as they move on to the new world of college. To all of them, no matter what their personal feelings and plans, it is important they remember one thing: as the year ends and high school finally is over, it marks not so much the beginning of the end as it is, instead, the end of the beginning. ASSEMBLAGE We come each year to learn of life, to see friends mature, to view minds development, te.watch dreams grow, r to see hopes fulfilled, and, sometimes, ? a = | to help sorrows vanish. We watch televised dea critical orations, litical vindittiveness, nd economig avarice, and we hope, someday, somehow, to begin to put an end Nil all. or tee But, most of all, we have gathered to reach out and sharé the joyful experiences of young J “ Two hundred and twenty students are Lincoln. Not huge by any means, the student body is still large enough to reflect the diversity that always exists in groups of young people. Interests and hobbies and lifestyles, even in a small rural school like Lincoln, have a way of being slightly different from one person to another. Lincoln has full-time jocks, part-time poets, and some-times academicians. It has artists and actors, speakers and singers, good guys and bad guys. Lincoln also has Elina and Margareta, two girls who spent a year of their lives with us. No one will forget how well the young people of Finland and Sweden and Iowa came together as brothers and sisters. In a world of war and international hostility, a part of the world knew peace and friendship. Student Margareta Ekstrom Everyone recognizes this blonde, blue- eyed Swedish girl as Margareta Ekstrom, one of our foreign exchange students at Lincoln. Maggie made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Meyer of Olin and her American sister, Kandie. Besides keeping busy with her studies, Margareta participated in chorus, vol- leyball, and L-Club. She was made an honorary member of the National Honor Society with a 3.4 grade point average. All of Lincoln High will miss Margareta and wish her success in the future. Good luck, Maggie! Elina Jalkanen From Bautalapi, Finland, came Lincoln's § petite, brunette foreign exchange student, Elina Jalkanen. Elina has spent her year in the company of the Norman Williams family of Mechanicsville. Since entering school in the fall, she has participated in chorus, annual staff, drama, basketball, and track. In track, which was her favorite, she earned a medal for her first place in the open mile. No one will ever forget that one, right Elina?! She will be returning to Finland in late July after a fun-filled, but hard year at Lincoln. Best of luck from LHS! SURRBRELRE SS. Two years are allotted to make you forget about recesses and learn about logarithms. It's the time when you want to go on a date, yet have no idea what to do if you can arrange one. It's the time when you go to dances and stand around all night, wishing you weren't afraid to ask a girl to dance. Mostly, junior high is the time you begin to grow up. At least a little bit. It's the most carefree time public education allows you. When you are in elementary, problems are simple and easy to solve. A thing like a valentine from a pretty girl will keep your spirits high for weeks. Getting a smile on your spelling paper makes something great to bring home and show your mom. Being retrospective is sometimes a good idea, especially when one remembers only the innocent kind of friendships that youthful companionship nurtured. Elementary KINDERGARTEN ——n First Row: W.
