With this thought in mind, we, the Lincolnite Staff of 1947, present to the students, faculty, and friends of Lincoln Community High School the thirty-third edition of the high school annual. May it recall to you the happy hours spent within the doors of Lincoln Community High School. The Staff DEDICATION To the Freedom from Discrimination because of Race, Religion, or Nationality, we, the class of '47, proudly dedicate this thirty-third edition of the Lincolnite. In the athletic events and other extra-cur- ricular activities of our own school, one sees that a person of any race can find a place. The Easter program presented by the Religious Education council shows that people of all religions can work together to produce something worth-while. And what is this idea of one nationality being better than another? Aren't we all Americans, regard- less of which flag the ship bringing our ancestors, flew? If everyone, everywhere, could learn what we at LCHS have already learned, perhaps we would gain the peace that everyone wants. BEHIND THE SCENES TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION .. ...... . SMALL Quietly, peacefully, our long-time friend and co-worker, Anne T. Small slipped away, Monday morning, March 10, 1947. Death always comes as a shock, so it will take some time for us to realize that one who was so long among us, who was so vital, so virile, so compelling an influence in our school, is gone. The teachers who have come and gone in these past years have each, given, I think, some- thing of worth to their pupils, something that in the lives of these boys and girls will be well nigh immortal. In Mrs. Smal1's case, her great contri- bution came from her teaching of good citizenship, effective, because she typified in her own life the principles of good living through an intelligent and active interest in helping to make her own community a good place in which to live. Her mantle falls on us. It is for us, then, to dedicate ourselves to keeping her memory green by carrying forward the high concepts of her work with the boys and girls of Lincoln Community High School these past 27 years. I cannot die! I shall come back, I know - Perhaps in the serene intelligence Of flowers under snowg Or maybe in the first breath-taking sense Of odor in the heather - Some part of me will yet be blowing warm, Alive in April weather. - Gilbert Maxwell Laura M. Q li -- K H PJ: The 1947 BOARD OF EDUCATION To the average student who comes to school every day, studies, and goes home in the evening, the thought never occurs of what makes the school run smoothly, and function systematically. The answer to this is the Board of Education. On the second Monday of every month there is a meeting to plan the school's programs, select the faculty, and pay the bills. These meetings are called Board Meetings, and the men prsent are known as the Board of Education. These men are selected by your mothers and fathers to direct the schools that are provided for by their taxes. They meet with Mr. Handlin who carries out the proposed programs. One of the latest considerat- ions of the Board is the possibility of making an addition to the school building. Because of build- ing supply shortages this plan is still in the blue- print stage, but it may someday become a reality. And if it does, it will be through the efforts of the Board of Education. Li1lC0l1Iiie Page 10 . . ,,,A, ff - Y,...-.,,. F . W. C. HANDLIN ' Principal , LCHS faculty and students are proud to note that Principal W. C. Handlin has been with us for twenty-eight years. During this time he has helped and guided many stu- dents thru the formative years of their life and on to greater goals and higher achievements. Mr. Handlin obtained his education at the University of Illinois, Unversity of Wisconsin, James Miliken University, and Columbia University. He has liberally given to all of this knowledge. ,4 , My ZLLZXI, The 1947 Lincolnite s I s 2 .4 MISS .XRRISTRYJNG V MR. HROVYNIQ THE DEANS Remembered by every member of the senior class of '47 will be our patient and devoted Deans, Miss Armstrong and Mr. Browne. Through their tireless efforts and eagerness to help us with our problems, we have become better students and citizens of tomorrow. The students, the school, and the community can be justly proud of the work these two coun- sellers have done to help make us better men and Women of tomorrow. I lclcu Igilllllllllll Under the able direction of a new faculty member, Charles S. Harned, the band com- pleted a successful year. The band played for football and basktball games, pep meetings, marched in parades, and presented a number of entertaining concerts. To become a member of the concert band, you have to pass an entrance exam which includes playing scales in all keys, sight read- ing, playing a solo, and being able to inter- pret tempo and dynamic markings. All band members are third class musicians upon en- Tbe 1947 Lincolnite tering. In order to become a second class musician you must be able to play exercises, scales, sight-read material of a more difficult nature, memorize a solo, Write a five lriund- red word essay of the history of your in- strument, produce correct intonation, and know all kinds of tempo and dynamic mark- ings. After passing this, you are entitled to Wear a chevron on your sleeve. Chair-play- offs are held at the beginning of the semest- er to determine each student's ability and his rightful place in each section. CHORAL CLUB The Choral Club, which meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:10 until 8:40, is com- posed of girls selected from the Girls' Glee Clubs. During the year, they have given performances for many programs such as: Thanksgiving and National Education Week program - with thc combined Glee Clubs, Christmas, Easter, and the Baccalaureate exercises. They also played an im- portant part in the school's Operetta. The group placed in Divisicn I at the Sect- icnal Music Contest held n Peoria in April and gained a 'Divisicn II at State contest. Under the direction of Charles Harned, this group gained a Divsion I at Secticnal Music con- test in April and then went on to State contest to get a Division III. The boys' glee club was combined with the Choral Club to form a Mixed chorus, which per- formed in the Big 12 Music Festival, and also sang at the Baccalaureate exercises. The 1947 Lincolnite Page 48 GIRLS' SEXTETTME One of the most active musical groups around school this year was the girls' sex- tette, which performed before many outside clubs, as well as for high school programs. One of the most interesting of these, perhaps, was the broadcast over WDZ in Tuscola. At the Sectional Music contest held in Peoria in March, the group placed in Division I, making them eligible to compete in the State contest in May. A Division II rating was awarded them there. Miss Margaret Hyde directed the group. BOYS' QUARTET Singing sometimes in true barbershop Page 49 style, and at other times making a hit by smooth rendition of the latest popular hits, the boys quartet gained much applause from everyone who heard them. Under the direct- ion of Mr. Harned, the boys traveled to the Sectional Music contest to place in Division II. STRING EN SEMBLE Because of the small number of students interested in the stringed instruments this year, a string ensemble was formed by Miss Hyde rather than an orchestra. Although no public performances were made by the group, much valuable practicing was done and it is believed that next year, the quartet will be ready to appear publicly. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Through the years the boys in the agricul- ture classes through the medium of the local F. F. A. Chapter completed several activities which were of educational value as well as making a contribution to the community. Early in the year, the group sponsored a rat abatement drive in which the students made available and distributed poison. In the Sectional judging contests for the year, the teams placed 5th in grain, 6th in poultry, 8th in fat stock and 8th in dairy. In total points won in these contests, the LCHS boys placed 4th, Dean Folkes was the second highest boy in the fat stock judging contest out of a group of 110 judges and William Weingarz ranked 10th out of the group in dairy judging. The boys anticipate the rewards which will be theirs as a result of successfully completing their production projects in crops and livestock during the next few months. The 1947 Lincolnite F w W 4 u 1 ANNUAL PLAY You Can't Take It With You by Hart and Kaufman The annual play, You Can't Take It Cast With You , a three-act comedy, was pre- sented in the high school gym, November 22. This play represented the turmoil and con- fusion that took place in the Martin Van- derhof home The play was so capably presented at this time that Scene I, Act I was entered into the Sectional contests where it rated first in Class A. This enabled the play cast to go on to the State contest where Phyllis Koyn was voted a member of the All State Play Cast. Page 57 Penelope Sycamore Essie Carmichael . Rheba .,..,.,..,,......... THE SENIOR PLAY KIND LADY by Edward Chodorav Kind Lady , a melodrama in three acts by Edward Chodorav taken from a story by Hugh Walpole, was presented May thirteen- the in the L. C. H. S. gym. Henry Abbott, who with his undernour- ished wife and baby, wins the confidence of Mary Herries, a dignified ,kindly woman in her late fifties, and succeeds in bringing his gang of thieves into the Herries home in Montague Square, London, England. The crooks practically cut Mary Herries off from her friends by convincing them that she is abroad. They even frighten Miss Her- ries' life long servant, Rose, so badly, that she resigns. Through the clever tricks of Henry Abbott, Mary Herries believes that she is be- coming insane. Meanwhile, not only has Henry Abbott The 1947 Lincolnite taken over the household and driven poor Mary Herries to the brink of insanity, but he also is stealing her rare, expensive collect- ion of painting. Mary Herries finally convinces Mr. Fost- er, who has come to buy some of her paint- ings, that Mr. Abbott is holding her prisoner and illegally selling her possessions. THESPIANS The Lincoln Chapter of the National Thesp- ian Dramatic Honor Society initiated sixteen new members during the past year, which brings the membership up to a grand total of twenty-two. This shows that there are still many that are in- terested in dramatics. The Thespian organization also sponsored the student directed play, Glamour in the Poc- onos. This play was given twice, once for an assembly and once for Central School. Under the supervision of Charles Hirt- man, who now claims a forty-seven year seniority, our janitorial staff has done more than its part to increase the attractiveness of our school. Mr. Hirtman is assisted by Russell Rankin, who is completing his fourteenth year on the job, and Clarence Schrader, our war-time bus driver who transferred to his present position. The night attendants are Ora Turley, a five- year man, and Alonzo Scott, a new comer to the group. BUS DRIVERS Fortune was with us, as the bus drivers were chosen from among many candidates. Our two bus drivers ,Mr. Sam Zimmerman, who has been with us for six years, and Mr. Darrell Henson, a returned war veteran, have a great responsibility in getting the county students to and from school. In order to help and keep order on the bus, each route has two well selected bus monitors. This year's assistants are: Ruth Aukamp, Marilyn Pettit, Mary Lou May, Mary Ann Wheeler, Mary Ann Gehlbach, Chan Fuller, Kenneth Ely, and and Rolly Barry. We acknowledge the services performed by these splendid workers. The 1947 Lmcolnite SECR f Y' 'cf- P 1 .. . ,,!. ' x , I ' ' , .33 -I..-J, I ,rli . . , 'fn '-r 'Q 'L--' . II. .' RA COACHE Although LCHS didn't have a too successful year in competitive sports, the blame can not be dumped entirely in the coaches laps. So let's chalk up this season to experience, tip our hats to five great guys and get out and fight for a world-beating team next year. MANAGERS Seldom seen and even less spoken of are the managers who have done a fine job this year and deserve the whole-hearted praise of all LCHS fans. FOOTBALL Linco1n's 1946 football team had a rather rough season as the records go, but the spirit displayed by the LCHS gridders kept the fans cheering throughout a season featuring heavily favored foes. A light, inexperienced, injury-ridden band, the local crew lost often, but was never upset. Outweighed in very game played, the Red and Green aggregation was outrun but not outlastedg outclassed but not outfought. Lacking stars, a well-balanced lineup started each conflict. Bob Poole, tackle, and Bruce Enselman, back, were the only return- ing lettermen, and both missed several games due to injuries. Fight and a never-say-down attitude were developed through much hard work on the part of the players and the coaching staff, consisting of Athletic Director Roy An- derson, with able assistance from William Hughes, J. O. Hodgson, Victor Baumgartner, Page 67 and Royce Lovelace. The sportsmanship ex- hibited is a tribute to our school. Credit for providing the spark, goes to the seniors, Bruce Enselman, Ronnie Forres- ter, Bob Leckrone, Dick Maurer, Bob Poole, and Les Williams, who led the juniors through the din of their first season of var- sity competition. The latter gained valuable knowledge and experience for use in the '47 season. Don, Olsen, Jim Smith, Henry Lee, John McCullough, and Tom Underwood have made up this squad. Deane Doolen a very able netman has been absent from the courts most of the season due to illness. Tennis in Lincoln is known as a minor sport. although it takes just about as much practice and Work to develop into a good tennis player as it does in track, basketball, and football. So how about three cheers for these unsung heroes of the courts. Marching at the head of the band and per- forming between halvcs at the basketball games were the baton twirlers in their snappy red uni- forms. In order to present their program, a great deal cf practice was necessary and we think these girls deserve a special round of applause fcr the fine work which they did. The 1947 Lincolnite CHEERLEADERS Let's have a big Oske wow Wow, Cheerleaders! All right, let's go!! The cheerleaders really deserve a big thank you, as it is their duty to instill pep into a sometimes listless crowd. They were always on the spot at all athletic events and all LCHS fans are proud of them. 1 Page 76 Page 7 7 The Lineolnite staff wishes to thank THE CAPITOL ENGRAVING COMPANY FELDMAN'S PRINT SHOP STAFFENBACHS BINDERS and all the photographers who helped make this 1947 Lincolnite one to be truly proud of.
