WHEN WE ARRIVED on campus in September we all had to adjust, sophomores as well as frosh. We had new tables and a fence outside the Uniong we had new boothes and the same old Mary inside. We had two new Deans of students, Mr. Hartsfield, who drove a yellow Cadillac and wore cowboy boots, and Miss Mulhollan, who wanted to be called Associate Dean, instead of Dean of Women. We had a new cafeteria manager, Mr. g'Mac , who gave us two choices of meals and two buffet tables of saladg even a daily menu so we could prepare ourselves in advance. And there was a new swimming pool, complete with piped in music and a tropical greenhouse. Though the freshmen who didnit wear their beanies suffered awfully at the hands of sophomores carrying Majic Markers and paint, they endured initiation week and went on to elect two members of the Unity Party, Mike Scannell and Tim Carlson, along with Hattie Blackwell as their class officers. Senator Paul Douglas there with President Dooleyj was speaker and honorary doctorate recipient at opening Convocation of the 1969 school year. 2 I, . are . , , W we t C ' . Norton Pepper held impromptu concerts behind H.H. and in the coffee house, and Nixon was pitted against Humphrey for the Presidency. As far as that was concerned, the Young Republicans mushroomed into the largest club on campus, dwarfing the hastily-formed Young Democrats. We had a few Wallace backers too, as well as some die-hards who continued to wear McCarthy buttons into the winter. An ill-fated peace march was organized among the students, but the local police tailed and har- rassed the leaders so much that the whole thing was called off. When Senator Dirksen visited campus to present a replica of the rocking chair Lincoln was assassinated in, several students were waving aloft placards and picketing. Mr. Dan Oberholtzer took a musical tour of Europe with a student group. They gave a farewell concert in the new swimming pool before leaving. i I J 3 X .fl 1' ,K fl Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen, native son of Pekin, came to LC one day in the fall to present a replica of the chair in which Abe Lincoln was assassinated. Senator Dirksen, campaigning at the time for another term in Washington, was a big hit with his sly humor and eloquent style. Vice President Layman and Dean Carpenter greeted the Senator on his arrival. Classes were in again at Harts Hall, and a little afternoon femininity never hurt the scene, even if it did mean books and homework and staying out of the draft. if W , I .L ff ,WP e .L , F 'Jig r 4 ,ft f g .ff f A , K I 4 ,, ,A '- ve: gif M 414 1227! ii? va M 5 W4 4 A Z 2 Qf . , fm Y a , 1 'ef f-1 VW WWW fi V , f ..,' 5, iff, I 'few 2 , W , A 2 2 Homecomlng meant soccer and a formal dance Alums flocked back to see old friends. FOR A WHILE the entire campus was worrying about the Dean's controversial paid informers, and about that time, too, Student Senate was rocked by impeachment proceedings against its vice president. He lost an all-school vote of confidence and resigned at the next Senate meeting. In November Jim Springer, alias the Cave Man, was chief auctioneer at a slave market, in which some mighty juicy slaves were auctioned off. A large crowd in the gymnasium took in the bidding and enjoyed the fun. Peter Jennings, well known ABC television news correspon- dent, spoke to a student audience as part of the Lyceum program. WE HAD MORE than a month of freedom during the winter when the school coupled seasonal holidays with Spring break to give us an unprecedented amount of vacation. Some students, however, chose to attend the college's first intersession. The area near the library entrance had been turned into a mini-trailer park, as the school had rented two huge mobile homes for temporary office space. For liquid refreshment we were not lacking. Everyone was 21, and Harrisl, A.J.,s, and Grannyis were the places to go. Those who werenlt tall enough for the bar used the soccer field, the tracks, or the friendl' nearby cornfields. ff , 'M I 18 TEACHERS MADE the year, too. Mr. Childress and Mr. Newlon pro- vided an avante-garde note, Ma Balof taught history as if she had lived it, and the Pascales taught how to live it. Mr. Jerry Airth scurried about campus with his earmuffs and gloves, while Mr. Hall and Mr. Hoover argued amidst clouds of cigarette smoke in the Union. Mr. Paul Younger was voted Teacher of the Year, Mr. C. A. Balof was Boss of the Year, and Paul Fields was named assistant swimming pool director of the year. Mr. Hilscher took his class to Florida, Mr. Oberholtzer tried Europe, and next year it looks like you'll have to dial Berlitz to find your favorite faculty member. '19 , ,. :sq ' f COME SPRINGTIME, we all came outside again, to roll and stroll in the campus grove, to join the track team down by the creek on a Friday or Saturday night, or to park in front of Hoyle and tip a few. When it got hot, we caught rays on the soccer field, watched intramural softball or varsity baseball, or drove down Nicholson Road to the favorite drinking spot. It was the year of the heads, when pot was available to the masses, and passing the joints became more important than passing courses. Every- body had long hair, the guys had mustaches, beards and long sideburns. Instead of waving to a friend, you raised two fingers in a peace sign, and on Saturday night getting stoned took on a new meaning. WITHOUT MUCH CHANCE to really show their stuff , the varsity cross country team was content to run mainly for experience. IT WAS A DISMAL YEAR AT LC for the boys who boot the ball around. Soccer spent a miserable fall with an 0-8-1 record, eking out a single tie game with Kendall College at Homecoming. Early the team looked promising, with good matches against Northern Illinois, Ken- dall, Shimer, and Springfield YMCA, but a lack of scoring punch and downhearted play brought on disaster. Behind the pitching of Ernie Scarpelli and Tom Gee, the hitting of Theo Sangster and Tom Farnsworth, the fielding of Dave Baughman, Skip Gold, and the rest of the squad, LC won three straight tournament games before narrowly losing to Wright, 3-2, for the state title. Although the team finished with a losing record, mainly on the strength of an early Southern tour for conditioning, they put on a fine show in the clutch for local fans. The loss of Dale Quinn and Jack Abroscat to ineligibility also hurt, although Frank Glas came on to play some good second place.
