A NATION SO CONCEIVED AND SO DEDICATED HAS SURVIVED FOREWORD When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom'd, And the great star early drop'd in the western sky in the night, I mourn'd, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring. So lamented the early poetic spokesman of America, Walt Whitman, at the death of President Abraham Lincoln. But the lamentation has evolved into a song of hope for the nation, for the spirit of Lincoln has lived on. Especially in this Land of Lincoln, here where Lincoln lived and worked and was buried, his impression is deep -- the im- pression of the legendary, almost romanticized, American, the fulfillment of the American Dream. Whitman could have probably anticipated a college embodying the spirit of the mourned president. And even today it exists, Lincoln College, a college whose history has paralleled the hopes of a rising nation. The theme of the Lygxite this year, therefore, is simply the graphic proof that Lincoln's spirit is present today, even in the field of education. 3
