Basketball Homecoming 15 Spirit shines through Small groups of Tiger fans slowly filled the stands at Bryant Stadium. Everyone huddled to- gether as the cold rain dropped down upon the blue and gold blanket of fans. By halftime, both the Tigers and the O'Hara Celtics were covered with mud. The Tigers went into the locker room behind 16 to 0. Half-time activities included the long-awaited crowning of the Homecoming Princesses and Queen: Nicole Sylvester, freshman princess. Dianne Walker, sophomore princess; Charice Nash, junior princess; and finally. Melissa Hahone. senior. Foot- ball Homecoming Queen. Afterward, winners and candidates cruised around the stadium track to conclude the crown- ing ceremonies. It was time for the Tigers to make their come- back, but the Celtics added seven more points to their total and now led 23 to 0. It seemed hopeless for the Tigers, who were now looking at their first defeat As thefourthquarter ended, the Celtics had gained a victory. Coach Jerry Price told the team, That'sokay We have six more and we can still go to the playoffs. Jeff Greene LA Tigers run into the field before the game. 16 Homecoming Candidates Melissa Ma- hone, Charice Nash, Diane Williams and Nicloe Silvers line up for a snapshot. Sophomores Keeyon Sin- gleton and Diane Williams are escorted by Alim Hafiz. Homecoming 16A The audience gets into the ac- tion of the Football Homecoming pep Assembly. The Senior Class hall decorations come through as number one. 16B Homecoming The dictionary defines spirit as enthusiasm and loyalty. But what is the True Blue Spirit? This spirit is something from within yourself. Something that makes it a must for attendance at a game. Something that makes you holler and cheer when they win and that makes you sad and cry when they lose. The something that never allows the Tigers to sit down and die. The something that allows you to say good game, win or lose. This is the spirit of a True Blue Tiger at heart. Bonita Powell raffle prize. Lincoln is known for its high academic achievements, a reputation which the student body strives to uphold by acting, thinking, and behaving with pride and commitment, because Lincoln South is the best. Staff members are here to help us along on the road to our education, and in doing so, become some of the most influential persons in our lives. And most important are the students. Our accomplishments come from thinking, experimenting, and getting involved, but most of all by being ourselves. Lincoln with regard to any single quality is a good school, but with all these elements combined, Lincoln Academy is fantastic! by Christina Nicholson bold at 'I At Lincoln we usually get what we go after, (top cen- ter) Tomorrow's artists, today. I could finally say I was a Senior — my last year ' said Judy Hadley, senior. Through years of struggling, striving, and endurance the Seniors finally received their reward of graduation. The Class of 1986 strived to be the best class ever. We feel we succeeded. Through hall decorating contest, fundraising activi- ties, the prom, a junior trip, and other activities, we've shown our great ability to succeed. Even though we had different personalities, we always came together when work was to be accomplished,'' said Orchid Fulbright, senior. Of course the Class of 1986 also liked to add a little fun to things. A Junior skip day, a Junior picnic, a New Years Eve party. Halloween rendevous, along with the Senior skip days, picnic, talent show, and parade are just an idea of the fun events. We had some of our best times when Halloween was here, said Craig Tyson, senior. Along with the work and fun came disappointments. The 2.5 GPA stan- dard that went into affect this year left the Senior Class with only 96 students. We were small in number but great in power, said Melissa Mahone, senior. Through our academic and social life, the Seniors feel that they are ready for the challenges ahead with success as our destiny. Bonita D. Marching and Concert Band along with Concert Choir went through many changes this year like the decreasing enrollment in these courses and the arrival of new choir director Dr. Tom Garrison. Concert Choir made many appearances this year around the Kansas City area such as the tree lighting ceremony at Gates and Son’s and Christmas caroling at the Plaza. The marching band, small in size but big in sound, performed at football games and parades. The Concert Band, after going to district last year, made a return to the festival at William Jewell. They finished the regular season with a 7-3 record. “The main key to our success was plenty of hardwork,” said Paul York, junior. Every afternoon at 2:30 players slowly trickled into the lockerroom to begin another rigorous day of practice. The season was highlighted by senior tailback Aaron Johnson, who rushed for over 1400 yards and was the state’s fourth leading rusher. Sophomore tightend Jerome Tolliver was noted for many spectacular catches in clutch situations. Other eyecatching spectacles were the famed “Boneshaker” defense and the explosive offense which ran like a big, powerful machine. One of the biggest highlights and accomplishments of the team was when the Tigers earned a spot in the Missouri State High School Football playoffs, another noted accomplishment of the team was the 138-0 victory over Northeast High School. This devastating tally of points was the second highest score in football history. This score put the Tigers in the record books as well as on local and national news. The Tigers weren’t expected to finish very well at all this season. “I had predicted them to play .500 ball,” said Head Coach Jerry Price. This year’s team was sought by many as the Cinderella Team of ’85. “With a lot of hard work, dedication and determina- tion, anyone can be a winner,” said Philip Taylor, senior. Many of the players felt that their key to success was hard work and closeness among teammates. Football 45 Moving Marathon Cross Country is on the rise The most grueling uphill, downhill and across land sport for the Interscholastic league was held at Swope Park and Blue Valley Park, where contestants strove for the gold. Cross Country is one of the world’s toughest events for running in high school. The man who bestowed the knowledge in the practices was Coach Bernard Williams. He made the team feel good, even when in anger. The team stuck together no matter how bad the weather conditions were. “One of the hardest things was waiting to run and watching people take on the hill,” said Cornell Perry junior. They cheered on those who were participating and helped them to cross the finish line. “The best thing the team accomplished this season was working together as a team and having school members place,” said Steve Newman, junior. The team had a few medals given to Varsity; Cornell Perry, Steven Newman, Moses Jones. JV; Jerome Allen, Alonzo Hill. Freshmen; Justin Duren. The only mix up at a meet occurred where Jerome Allen, sophomore, didn’t receive a medal due to the cause of displacement by judges. They apologized and said he would have his medal in within a few days. That turned into 2 V2 months. Other than that dispute, the team was satisfied. “I will remember this year as a battle of the fittest,” said Moses Jones, junior, who ran with injuries in several meets. This year was a success toward a new sport challenged by all, who strove for the gold and met the “Agony of the Green Monster.” Moses Jones _■ - POT v • - Justin Duren, freshman, is congratulated by Coach Bernard Williams for coming in first Striving through the final mile were sophomores Brian Payton. The students have continued the task of finding ways to conserve energy for the future during this school year. The project involved all students and all teachers. It has increased everyone’s awareness of the need to use knowledge from many fields to solve present and future problems. Activities culminated in an Energy-Go-Round on March 26. These students join with all of us in wishing Mr. Smith continued success in all his endeavors. Typing Here to Help Autobiographies of famous or successful persons frequently identify a teacher as the spark that ignited their interest in a particular field of study or the guiding hand that led them away from mischief or the inspirational mentor whose enthusiasm and patience caused them to believe in their own talents and abilities. Long after students have forgotten the definition of a quadrilateral, they remember these teachers. Lincoln Academy South is blessed with an abundance of such dedicated and outstanding teachers. Lincoln South could not function without all the “behind the scenes” help from the secretarial, cafeteria, and custodial staff. The hot lunches, clean halls, and timely reporting of crucial information do not happen magically although the quiet efficiency of our staff sometimes causes us to take them for granted.
