TAKING A STEP Forward Lincoln took a step further in sports as well as academics. “The team showed team work, responsibility and worked hard all season. In the end the hard work paid off,” said Coach Jerry Price. Coach was right. It did pay off. Because for the first time Lincoln Academy made the High School Missouri Association Play-offs. After having an extra week off during Christmas vacation because of high winds, temperatures below zero and heavy snow, the students returned to a cold snow damaged building. There was no heat and the new wing first floor had been flooded. “It was like entering an ice box in some of the rooms,” said Kim McCauley, senior. The snow and flood waters damaged heaters, linoleum tile floors and the ceiling. Photography, art equipment and mater- ials were destroyed also. “It will take time but new materials will be replaced,” said Mrs. Gloriann Lui, Art and Photography Instructor. The chemistry lab felt the aftermath when the heat was restored. It caused bottles to break along with damaging chemicals and audio visual equipment. The library was also affected by the weather, water destroyed the carpet, magazines and library materials. To their surprise the students had the distinct pleasure of entering the lunch room one afternoon and noticing that the school had provided them with a room full of blue and gold chairs. “I liked them at first but later the size of the chairs and amount of students eating on one lunch period prohibited regular movement,” said Lorenzo Hammond, senior. Other improvements made on the school were new doors added to the girls’ and boys’ restrooms and new carpet in the library. “I feel a healthy atmosphere contributes to a healthier attitude toward school,” said Mrs. Judy Morgan, Social Studies teacher.
