Practl ca 4rti Skills to build upon Practical Arts classes teach skills necessary for independent living. They also teach basic skills for certain jobs. Industrial Arts and Home Economics classes fall under the heading of Practical Arts. Among the home economics classes are Clothing, Foods and Child Development. In Child Development students learn the growth of babies from fertiliza- tion to birth. The students also learn about the emotions that children go through in life and use dolls to learn how to take care of babies. “You learn the qualifications of a good parent,” said Paulette Harris-Bey, sophomore, “I sug- gest this class for those plan- ning going into a field working with small children.” In Foods 1 and 2 student are taught how to prepare food. They learn the nutritional value of food. Clothing 1 and 2 teaches students sewing procedures and basic alternation skills. Stu- dents begin with a simple pro- ject and with each new project a different skill is learned. The Industrial Arts classes include Drafting, Home Repair, Metal Works and Woods. Students in drafting do preci- sion mechanical drawings. This course is advised for people who want to be an architect, engin- eer or drafts person. In Woods 1 and 2 students learn the steps in producing a wood craft. “In this class we make anything which can be created with wood,” said John Jackson, senior.
