(Photo by Shawn Edwards) 2 Theme TAKING A STEP rcrward D oors opened this year in both campuses with many new, challenging and exciting ideas for students and faculty. Upperclassmen returned to 1983-84 term with feelings of leadership and a sense of accomplishment of past years and the year that was ahead. “This year I’ve set a lot of goals for myself. I believe with the atmosphere that sur- rounds the school, I’ll achieve all of them,” said Teri Smith, senior. For 366 students, the largest number of freshmen in recent years, it meant stepping into new ways of thinking about their life, achievements and ideals. There were many un- familiar faces, but one face was very familiar to them. That face was of Dr. William Love, previously the dean of South Campus for the past five years. “It is good to have someone already familiar with us,” said Delecia McConnell, freshman. Dean Love’s shoes were filled quite adequately by Ms. Linda Herrin, the first female prin- cipal in Lincoln’s history. Of the academy’s many ad- vancements one was student limitation on the number of absences and tardies they were allowed before a parent-teacher conference was set or automatic suspension. Another addition was U.S.S.R. (Uninterrupted Silent Sustained Reading) a program in which students read or wrote in one class each day. Jaclyn Kennedy Theme 3 TAKING A STEP Forward Lincoln took a step further in sports as well as academics. “The team showed team work, responsibility and worked hard all season. In the end the hard work paid off,” said Coach Jerry Price. Coach was right. It did pay off. Because for the first time Lincoln Academy made the High School Missouri Association Play-offs. After having an extra week off during Christmas vacation because of high winds, temperatures below zero and heavy snow, the students returned to a cold snow damaged building. There was no heat and the new wing first floor had been flooded. “It was like entering an ice box in some of the rooms,” said Kim McCauley, senior. The snow and flood waters damaged heaters, linoleum tile floors and the ceiling. Photography, art equipment and mater- ials were destroyed also. “It will take time but new materials will be replaced,” said Mrs. Gloriann Lui, Art and Photography Instructor. The chemistry lab felt the aftermath when the heat was restored. It caused bottles to break along with damaging chemicals and audio visual equipment. The library was also affected by the weather, water destroyed the carpet, magazines and library materials. To their surprise the students had the distinct pleasure of entering the lunch room one afternoon and noticing that the school had provided them with a room full of blue and gold chairs. “I liked them at first but later the size of the chairs and amount of students eating on one lunch period prohibited regular movement,” said Lorenzo Hammond, senior. Other improvements made on the school were new doors added to the girls’ and boys’ restrooms and new carpet in the library. “I feel a healthy atmosphere contributes to a healthier attitude toward school,” said Mrs. Judy Morgan, Social Studies teacher. Homecoming Raindrops don't dampen spirit Excitement, anticipation and doubt — all of these were a part of the homecoming spirit. Homecoming was finally here again. The festivities started out with a show to intro- duce the royalty. Then as the football team was introduced, the crowd went into hysterics. The team showed that they were number one as they waved their fingers high and proud in the air. The next night was the big game against O’Hara. The crowd was skeptical about beating the Celtics for homecoming. The Tigers dug in but were down at half time. As the royalty winners were announced, Brian Kearney and Jackie Brown emerged as King and Queen. During the second half it started to rain. “Instead of dampening the spirit it seemed to enlighten them,” said Beth Dawson, junior. Despite the rain the Tigers went on to defeat O’Hara. As the final seconds ticked off a jubilant crowd ran out on the field to congratulate their Tigers. Shawn Edwards The Blue Tigers are raring to go against the O’Hara Celtics on Homecoming night at the Southeast field. Homecoming 7 Goes a Step cuth Campus Further It may be lunch time but work goes on. The entries were on display a week before being taken down to the district office when three in each category were chosen from Grades 7-12 in the district. Discrimination Discrimination, I really hate it. I wish we would all get together and eliminate it. The Black and Whites are so far apart To think about it just breaks my heart. Why they don’t communicate is a question to me. But one day soon, we shall have unity. United Nations Day. South Campus 11 i Sounds o£ LA The sound of music has varied among the students at Lincoln Academy. Rock-n-Roll, Punk Rock, Soul, and even Country Western have become an important part of our students’ listening enjoyment. “I listen to the stereo while I do my homework, I don’t know what it is but I seem to be able to concentrate better,” said Howis Toler, sophomore. The music change is about as common as the change in fashion. “I think that fashion and music are combined together. The fifties look is in and so is the sound,” said Jalenda Motley, junior. The hair styles also changed in the midst of the music era. There are those who style their hair like Prince or maybe have it cut like Kajagoogoo. Some may go as far as to dye their hair. This year is more of the Punk Rock era. The tempo is faster and the fashion is right there with it. The tight jeans, shirts hanging off the shoulder, high water jeans, big shirts, mini skirts, muscle shirts, low heel pumps, leather pants - the list could go on. The singer and groups have become more popular than ever. If you look through the halls of Lincoln Academy, you will see people wearing their favorite singer or group. Some wear buttons with Michael Jackson, Prince, Rick Springfield, Hall and Oats, Adam Ant, Mean at Work, Duran Duran and Culture Club. While that section wishes to wear buttons, others may wish to wear tee-shirts with slogans or pictures of their favorite singer such as Michael Jackson; Thriller, Stevie Nicks, Quiet Riot, David Bowie; Let’s Dance, Loverboy, The Clash, and The Police. The true spirit of the music lovers is how they display it. As long as the singers keep giving the beat, the students will keep up the spirit of music. Doris Wilson 12 Prince-at-his best. The townfolk of Yonkers announce the valuable matchmaking services of Dolly Levi. 16 Hello Dolly Dolly’s slcry ad infinitum phraim, he’s as good as mine.” So Dolly Levi thinks. Her conniving mind has cooked up a mulitifaceted plot: marry Horace Vandergelder, millionaire, and match up three other couples on the way. What ensues is the develop- ment of one of the finest plays ever produced by the Lincoln Academy Concert Choir. “Hello Dolly” was lovingly molded by a group of megalo-talented and dedicated people. Which is not to say that all was perfect: the show’s rehearsals ran so behind schedule that the cast and crews were required to stay for long exhausting late night rehearsals. The old-fashioned dresses were a problem to find. Many of the girls brought their own. But the overall hindrance was that the cast, for the most part, did not like each other at the beginning. And this contempt showed up in the rehearsal. But there is something magical about the production of a musical — the close proximi- tives, the sweat, the worry are shared by all, and in the end, the cast and crew were brought together in an unbreakable bond to make “Hello Dolly” sparkle with glorious magic of its own. Debbie Ontman “I'm available for fresh Jersey eggs, surgical corsettes reboned, and match- making, Dolly (Felicia Bums) tells cast member Keith Smith. Martez Gardner (Horace Vender- gelder) and Felicia Burns (Dolly Levi) lead the way for the spring musical “Hello Dolly” directed by Mrs. Dor- othy Shepherd. Academics 19 Practl ca _ 4rti Skills to build upon Practical Arts classes teach skills necessary for independent living. They also teach basic skills for certain jobs. Industrial Arts and Home Economics classes fall under the heading of Practical Arts. Among the home economics classes are Clothing, Foods and Child Development. In Child Development students learn the growth of babies from fertiliza- tion to birth. The students also learn about the emotions that children go through in life and use dolls to learn how to take care of babies. “You learn the qualifications of a good parent,” said Paulette Harris-Bey, sophomore, “I sug- gest this class for those plan- ning going into a field working with small children.” In Foods 1 and 2 student are taught how to prepare food. They learn the nutritional value of food. Clothing 1 and 2 teaches students sewing procedures and basic alternation skills. Stu- dents begin with a simple pro- ject and with each new project a different skill is learned. The Industrial Arts classes include Drafting, Home Repair, Metal Works and Woods. Students in drafting do preci- sion mechanical drawings. This course is advised for people who want to be an architect, engin- eer or drafts person. In Woods 1 and 2 students learn the steps in producing a wood craft. “In this class we make anything which can be created with wood,” said John Jackson, senior. Miranda Lilly OUie Haggins, and Deidra Williams work toegether in making their dessert for the day- 20 Practical Arts Andrea Johnson, Markina Harris, Nicole Thomas, Kamel a Clayton, Ms. Eunice Wilson, and Debra White work on pattern layouts. Woods and Metals teacher Mr. Earl Frevele shows John Colston, junior, how to weld like a pro. Cordell Brown, freshman, sands his work down. Tim Lona and Robert Golston draw to scale in drafting. Practical Arts 21 uiineii Do typing and When enrolling for the next year, the main courses to prepare for college such as math, history, and English are stressed. But this year the importance of taking a typing course has also been implied. Why? Mrs. Kathie James, typing and shorthand teacher, says, “All business courses can help you if you go to college because all reports are typed and if you can’t type, you have to pay someone.” “If you are unable to go to college,” Mrs. James added, “you can always find some type of job. They use typing everywhere. There’s not a business anywhere that I know of that doesn’t use typing.” But what about shorthand, how will that help in the future? Karen shorthand help? Dixon, senior, says, “I think it will help me a lot in college taking notes and all. I think shorthand should be stressed just as much as typing, the two classes go together. You should learn how to take notes and then be able to type them.” Computers are becoming big these days also. By the time the freshman class of 1987 graduates, computes will probably have taken over. “With computers becoming big, typing is always needed,” said Mrs. James. “The main thing with typing and shorthand is, if my teaching career ends, I can always do something else,” she concluded. Leslie Crispin Mary Robinson, Nicole Anderson, Jackie Brown, Marcia Lee, and Michelle Johnson take dictation in shorthand. Lanetta Wilmore-Bey shows her skills. 22 Business Mrs. James9 assistant Ms. Webb helps typing class. Business 23 Mrs. Ernestine Clark's third hour accounting class work out problems. While instructing class, Mrs. Katie James still sits pretty. Vocati ona .Arti Teaching job skills Fifty-four students attend the Tech either in the morning or the afternoon session. The Tech offers many courses — Child- care, Data Entry, Data Processing, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Drafting, Commercial Art, and Industrial Sewing. The Tech also has a job placement program. Kevin Brown is a 16-year old junior who is taking the couse in Culinary Arts which is a one year course. After completion he will receive a certificate of completion. Kevin has learned to decorate pantries and pastries. He is hoping to open his own restaurant one day. Kevin thinks his teacher Mrs. Fannie Nelson is a good teacher. “No matter how hard she gets, that just makes me more determined to learn,” Kevin said. Kevin will attend the University of Missouri — Columbia. Kevin’s hobbies are dancing, singing and cooking. Rosalind Jones is a 17-year old senior who is taking Data Entry in the afternoon session. Rosalind has learned to use the IBM system. She checks to see if the data is correct and speed is measured for accuracy. A disadvantage of her class is that they do not have enough modern machines such as the diskette machine. However she feels that Data Entry is a great field to be in and a money making field. Lyvette Clark Rory Ross, senior, practices pressing technique. 24 Vocational Arts Marietta Hubbard, senior, inspects garment before meeting a deadline. Commercial Clothing teacher Ms. Toni Runnels helps Marietta Hubbard, senior. Ms. Janetta Bradley, Cosmetology teacher, instructs Tanya Redmond, senior. Lisa Jones and Tyrone Creer, seniors, are hard at work in Commercial Clothing. Vocational Arts 25 Practice makes perfect aaeeeoo,” intones the choir. “Snark,” blasts a horn. !! ☆!! screams a marcher as a fellow band member reduces his instep. Such is the excitement, the versatility and sometimes the 923 Richter scale level of the Fine Arts classes. More than 590 musically inclined student sing in the Concert Choir. Mrs. Dorothy Shepherd, director of the choir, says, “If a student wants to be a music major, I can work on an individual basis with the student. This can help a student develop higher self-esteem and strive for leadership roles. Mrs. Sheperd and Mr. Calvin Whit- more III teach the Piano Lab classes. Colleen Houlihan, sophomore explains, “I took Piano Lab to express myself in music.” Mr. Whitmore also directs the band. A typical warm-up consists of jumping jacks, push-ups, aerobics, sit-ups, shotguns and running. Afterwards the members march for 15 minutes without their instruments, go over their dance routines and then divide into the sections. “It’s a good thing to fall back on if you don’t succeed in a career such as engineer- ing, art or an English teacher,” observes Darrin Johnson, sophomore, who plays tuba in the Marching Band. “Music is a whole other language.” Drama can also be considered a different language. Taught by Mrs. Brenda Rivette, drama students master the art of theatrical expression. Yolanda Murry, senior, agrees. “I felt as though I could enhance my theatrical abilities. I need experience on stage and Drama provides me with that.” Not only can the voice be developed, the eye-to-hand coordination can be trained, according to Ernest Hogan, junior. “I took art because I believed I had some artistic ability and I wanted it to flourish. It is a good class to take because you discipline your mind.” The art classes are taught by Mr. Joseph Redden and Mrs. Gloriann Liu. Mrs. Liu also guides students in the art of photography. “I may be a future hobby,” thinks Carl Connett, senior. “But it gets pretty expensive. Maybe a future way to waste my money.” However one views a Fine Arts class, it is obvious that nothing is wasted when the end product is not only wreathed in eloquent splendor, but when a big, fat “E” is attached to it too. Debbie Ontman f Concert Choir sits prepared to give another performance. Renee Eubanks creates her masterpiece in Mr. Joseph Redden s art class. Michael Taylor checks his prints in photography class. Mr. Robert Mitchell expresses his expertise in math. Jerrod Dillon dissects a cat as part of a second semester research project. 28 Mathematics and Science ]atli and Science J to Z Lincoln offers a variety of math and science courses. Students may take these courses according to their own interest or desire for higher education. Students may take computer program- ming to learn how to operate a computer. “In computer programming we are taught marketable skills which apply to various business situations,” said Keith Person, junior. In geometry, students learn theorems, formulas and corollaries for shapes of various dimensions. Students are also taught how to write proofs. “I think this is a good course for those who are taking drafting or those who plan to be architects,” said Phillip Taylor, sophomore. One of the advanced math courses offered is pre-calculus. Pre-calculus teaches advanced methods in algebra and trigon- ometry. Karen Dixson, senior, said, “I took this course because I wanted a more advanced form of math that would help me in college. Other math courses offered at Lincoln are algebra, Advanced Algebra, trigonometry, Refresher Math and calculus. Among many different science courses offered is a course called Anatomy Phy- siology. During the first semester of the course, students study the structure and function of the human body. During the second semester students dissect a cat and compare its antomoy to that of a human. This is compiled into a 40-page research paper which is checked by a college. “This course offers a better understanding of the human body and a chance for three or five hours of college credit,” said instructor Mr. Stephen Kohl. For students who would like to take a more advanced form of physical science, there is chemistry. Chemistry helps students develop observation skills through exper- iments. “We have weekly lab sessions, perform experiments and discuss the proper- ties and reactions of chemicals,” said Mrs. Joan Sabatka, chemistry teacher. Other advanced classes in science are zoology, Advanced Biology, physics, GT Science, Advanced Chemistry and ecology. He is a second degree black belt in the Karate-do style and a first degree black belt in the Kobindo style. Mr. McCoy says that his life has changed somewhat since his involvement. “I have expanded my mind to include wisdom and ways of life that come from other cultures,” he said. Life for his students has also altered somewhat. “You get good exercise and build your muscles up,” explains Doug Ontman, seventh grader (yel- low belt). “I’m just trying to gain new muscles,” said Mike Stous, freshman (yellow belt). “I like Karate because I can improve my concentration,” said Tony Moss, junior (green belt). The Youth for Christ Club does not claim that its members or guests have to be any particular religion or denomination. Rather, the belief that there is one God, and that all are free to worship Him, is the foundation for the YFC’s existence. No one is forced to accept any concept or belief. The beliefs are discussed in some meetings; in others, a speaker is selected to talk about a certain area in the Bible or in the life of a Christian. Also included in a typical meeting are various songs of praise, wacky games, quizzes, humorous skits and sometimes even a party. At the end of the meeting there is an invitation for anyone who wishes to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, to rededicate their life, or to discuss a personal problem with a counselor. “I like YFC for the Christian fellowship, and I also like to see people saved,” says Lloyd Rossback, sophomore. “It’s a place where I can be with other Christians and grow in the Lord,” say Mike Stous, freshman. Added Debbie Ontman, sophomore, “We are fortunate to have the freedom to love and worship God together.” Debbie Ontman Steve Burton, senior, entertains exchange students. The ROTC Battalion headed by LTC. Ross Snare and SFC Roosevelt Cook, which had from 100-150 cadets in the past year, almost doubled the amount of students this school year. The ROTC program has offered a lot to students here. It has given many the chance to be leaders, while others have received scholarships to any college that offers ROTC. However, ROTC was not all work. There were some good times like the ROTC Ball February 11 in the Little Theater. During this formal affair, five young ladies were crowned. They were Katrina Timazee, Senior Queen; Damita Galbearth, Senior Princess; Tracy Weaver, Junior Princess; LaDonna Williams, Sophomore Princess; and Charlene Grayson, Freshman Princess. This year there are quite a few new editors. The main editor, Jaclyn Kennedy, has been on the staff three years. Jaclyn says, “It’s a lot of work, but I enjoy seeing the finished product. What I don’t like is seeing kids not really interested and not doing anything.” Mrs. Kelly, an English teacher, has been over the yearbook and newspaper staff for six years. “I was drafted into the yearbook when a previous sponsor was furloughed before Lincoln became an academy,” said Mrs. Kelly. “The same goes for the newspaper staff. I like being able to work with students on something other than regular classroom assign- ments. I really enjoy seeing students create.” Miranda Lilly, sophomore, is one of the new editors. She says, “Being a new editor, I realized that it is more work than I had anticipated. But I think it is exciting dealing with a major school publication. Working out in the heat from 8 a. m. to noon was just the start. “But truly, summer practice did pay off,” said junior Grant Cook. “It gave us more experience and encouragement to endure to the end and the strength to go on.” “Hot and dry, the Tigers let not a practice go out without putting their all into it,” said Coach Jerry Price. “I try to protect the players from the heat and other elements and they seem to enjoy the practice more.” “Although practice was long and hot,” said sophomore Shawn Edwards, “and it took a lot out of us, at the end it was well worth it.” Well worth it indeed. The season went out 6-4, a fantastic victory. A step from state, the Tigers were the first team in Lincoln’s history to enter the Missouri state play off. “We were so close to state,” said Coach Price. “Quite naturally I’m happy we made it as far as we did. But I’m not satisfied that we didn’t win it all. Due to the major factors, the weather, elements and the players stopped us from going farther,” he said. “But they were truly dedicated,” he added. Among these were Phillip Taylor and Tim McClunie - “Best Sophomores”, Steven Burton and Timothy Lona - “True Blue Tigers”, and Clinton Cason - “Best New- comer of the year”. Other recognized for strictly playing abilities were Miguel Warren, most valuable offen- sive player; William Hill, most valuable defensive player; and Robert Golston, most valuable player. These young men were picked by our coaching, staff, but there were several young men chosen by the Inters- cholastic league coaches to all league honors. The first team selections were Miguel Warren, running back; John Brooks, slot back; William Hill, defensive tackle; and John Kemp linebacker. Second team selections were Anthony Tatum, tight end; Martez Gardener, defensive end; Robert Golston, defensive safety; Elgie Hurd, guard; Louis Moten, tackle; and John Kemp, center. As we commend these young men on a job well done there is one who deserves more than a congratulations. Miguel Warren, a valuable asset to this year’s team, leaves behind him, this his last season, a hard act to follow. Two of Miguel’s most out- standing accomplishments Further were that he rushed for over 1200 yards in nine games which awarded him leading rusher in all the Interscholas- tic league history. He was also named Most Valuable Player of the league. With these awards in the bag, Warren was offered several athletic scholarships in both football and baseball, and is having a difficult time deciding with offer to take; however, Miguel says, “I thank God for giving me the talent and I am going to put it to good use wherever I go.” Tracey Dennis and Tracy Weaver Miguel Warren, senior, ends season as a League MVP. The football seemed to be up in the air a lot this season as the freshman squad passed the ball more than ever led by the talents of Duane Prewitt, quarterback; Carnell Perry, wide receiver; and Artist Lewis, fullback. The freshmen whisked right past their first three opponents with big wins, led by a wide open style offense, backed by a stingy defense. “We are going to put it up this year,” said Coach Bernard Wil- liams, and put it up they did. As the spirits of the freshman team were high on cloud nine, a huge setback hit them. They lost the services of fullback Artist Lewis with a broken arm. To make matters worse, the last three games were played in horrendous weather with terrible field conditions. The spirits of the team seemed to fade as they tied and lost their last two games to tough opponents. “Even though we lost our last two games we still had a season to be proud about,” said Oliver Rich. Although the team finished on a low note they still had one of the finest season of any freshman team in recent years. “If we stay together in the future you’ll hear a lot about us,” said Carnell Perry. The Lincoln Academy cross country team, consisting of 20 actively running members, basically our basketball players getting into condititon or simply those who enjoy running. “I enjoy running because I like the excitement of winning,” says John Cock, junior. This year John holds the best time on our team for the 2 V4 mile run. This time placed John 17th out of 100 during one competition. The most consistent performers pointed out by coach Luther Brown were Bobby Hayes, Darrin Mebane, and John Cock. “In most of our meets these three young men were our first three fin- ishers,” says Coach Brown. Bobby was hampered by injury halfway through the season, but Darrin and John continued to perform well. Well enough to finish fourth in the league meet. Although these and other young men on the team don’t get the recognition they deserve, they should be commended on a job well done. 72 The cross country team take the starting line to begin the race. Marlin Young and Demetrius Davis are on the move. Coach Luther Brown gives a few words of encouragement to John Cox before his running. Dewayne Matthews, Demetrius Davis, Marlon Young, and Brett Wyatt make jokes to relive the tension. 73 The Lady Tigers set up for a return volley. Justina Robinson bumps the ball high to her teammates. 74 Volleyball A bad bump for volleyball Low participation from some of the team members and the school unfortunately showed up in the results of this year’s volleyball season. Although the team gave the season their best effort, the incentive that is necessary to win simply wasn’t there. With minimal school sup- port and lots of new team members still working for accep- tance the 0 wins - 9 loss season became more understandable. “We needed to work together more during practices”, said Michelle Nissen, starting player for the 1983 season. The team lost a lot of players, and attendence for practice was irregular, which made it hard to build up the necessary team spirit. With a lot of new players and returning players not quite ac- cepting the changes, the team as a whole didn’t function very well and didn’t quite care enough to try their best. It was as though the team had given up before they gave themselves a chance. The effort was there, but not the belief that they could play and win. So the 1983 Girls’ Volleyball season was a bad one. Hopefully the players will pull together for the 1984 season and that season will end a litle more positively. Things looked pretty dismal for the Blue Tigers at the beginning of the 1983-84 season, but in the end Hopkins’ prediction became reality. The Tigers, who tied for last place in the Interscholas- tic League, showed a tremendous comeback in post-season play and went on to take fourth place in the Missouri State High School Class 4A Tournament. How does a team go from last place locally to fourth place in State play-offs? Although many attribute it to luck, Coach Bernard Williams explains, “We just kept doing the same thing over again until we got it right.” Williams became head coach this year when former coach Samuel Cofield left Lincoln to take on the job as coordinator of Interscholastic League activities. Being a new coach, Williams says, “The biggest problem was making the players adjust to a new way of doing things. Aside from problems, there was one major asset that kept the team going,” continued Williams, “Most of the team were seniors who knew each other and were able to play well together as a team.” Returning seniors were Damon Hopkins, captain; Robert Golston, Ronald Hammons, Lacy Eldridge, Miguel Warren, Brett Wyatt and Paris Harrington. Other returning varsity players were John Golston, Darryl Shaw, Ray Eubanks, Ben Suber, Leonard Gant and Marlin Young. What about next year?” “Next year is definitely going to be good,” boasts Williams, “the JV team looked real good this season.” Add the varsity experience with a good underclassmen team and you’ve got... “a winning combination.” Karen Dixon Basketball 79 M.L «0Me ? The 1983-84 Basketball Homecoming Queen, LaTonya Clayton and her royalty were chosen in a somewhat different manner. This year anyone running for queen had to be either a Cheerleader, Pom Pon girl, or a Pep Club member. Then these people were to sell tickets and the person selling the most tickets was crowned queen and the royalty was made up of second and third place ticket sellers. “I feel the student body should have the final vote then we can see who the students of this school want,” said Alan Moore, this year’s junior class president. As the varsity girls ended their season with only two wins, this years team lacked in two areas — experience and height. With a varsity starting line up consisting of juniors and freshmen, and no returning seniors, experience was not the thing these girls could fall back on. Among these players only one, Justina Robinson, junior stood beyond the average height of 5'6, so height was one other liability to this team. But the two assets these girls did have and used to their best advantage were potential and team work. “We had good potential this year but it will be more to our advantage next year since we know each other on the court,” said Justina Robinson, a returning varsity player. “The best thing about this team is that everybody con- tributes and we don’t depend on just one person,” Monica Tindall also a returning varsity player. Faculty 91 Office After 31 years, Mrs. Ruby Hughes — mild mannered secretary or Superstar? Mrs. Hughes used to sing with her husband’s orchestra which was named Bob Williams Allstar Orchestra. To the faculty she’s not so mild mannered, but is respect- ed as one of the great assets in the history of Lincoln. “I’ve seen it all right here at Lin- coln,” said Mrs. Hughes. For 31 years Mrs. Hughes occupied the front office in which she went from secretary to bookkeeper. She said she has no aches or Mrs. Ruby Hughes receives a bouquet of red roses on the day of her retirement dinner. Mrs. Hughes pains, just a little stiffness of the joints. “I don’t know about retirement,” Mrs. Hughes said. Because of having no one to fill her space she continued to work. “I don’t regret a moment,” she said. “When I first came to this school each generation was so very different,” said Mrs. Hughes. At Christmas each year the administration would bes- tow Christmas joy by mounting a six foot tall Christmas Tree in the front hall, but as the years went by the custom was slowly retires done away with. “I will really miss all the activities and the people,” Mrs. Hughes said. She attended Wendell Phil- lips Elementary School and grad- uated from Lincoln High School. She attended Teledega College for two and a half years. After retirement she plans to do a little traveling, brush up on her piano and do some sewing. Ronnie LaNear and Pamela Wark Ms. J. Etier, Secretary Ms. Ruby Hughes, Secretary Ms. D. But the time must come. At the start of the year your underclassmates were wishing you away, just so that they could be moved ahead one more step. But as time draws nearer, we would enjoy it if you’d stay. But there is one thing that we must realize no matter how much we’ll miss you, and that is ................ “Your Time Has Come” Good Luck to you, Class of ’84. Tracy T. Weaver, junior Seniors 97 Well, our turn has finally come. The class of 1984 are big Seniors. It’s something that we’ve all been looking forward to. After this year it’s the beginning of a new beginning. The Senior Class of ’84 as well as all the Senior classes haven’t had it easy. We’ve had to struggle and strive to obtain enough credits to be Seniors too, but now it’s our turn to hit all the fun activities, like the Senior Picnic, lunches, breakfasts, Senior Day pro- gram, baccalaureate and last but not least graduation. The goal we’ve been striving to reach for the past twelve years. But after this year is over it’s time to think about college and careers. The decision to go straight to college or hit the job market is a tough one, but the class of ’84 will be successful in whatever life leads them to. They’re so energetic. They seem to be a lot more mature than I’d thought they’d be. They still have a ways to go, but I think they’ll turn out all right,” said Lisa Gordon, senior. The junior class is follow- ing the path of life to become mature and very ambitious adults. “I think this years juniors have really changed as far as our freshmen and so- phomore years. I also think that their maturity is a sign of them growing-up,” said Chareese Higgins, junior. Maturity isn’t the only change people have noticed in the junior class. “This year’s juniors have added something new to their class: CON- FIDENCE! They put out so much of it. It’ll strangle you alive,” said Damita Galbearth, senior. There are juniors that have shown their confidence in themselves by finishing their requirements as students at Lincoln Academy and earned the honor of graduating early. The junior class talent has not gone unknown. “I feel the junior class is a very talented group of people. I feel they will succeed in the future in what- ever they do,” said Justina Robinson, junior. Maturity, self-confidence, and talent, the junior class can be proud of their status at Lincoln Academy. “I think that the junior class of ’85 is the best class ever to hit LA. Be ever faithful and honest to yourself, and others will learn to relate honestly with you. 3. Remember sacrifice and commitment are the keys to success. 4.
