Organizations Three new groups were adopted here at the Academy. Jobs for Missouri Graduates is designed to teach students the basic essentials of finding the right job and how to keep it. “Basically our job is to make students aware of job searching skills. We make them aware of community employ- ment and give them some type of career path,” said adviser Ms. Janet Watson. Xinos, a sorority sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary teachers fraternity, was formed to help high school ladies higher their goals of education and help make their and other communities better. They held a bake sale and visited Swope Ridge Nursing Home and Zion Grove Church. The group was sponsored by Mrs. Helen Ragsdale, social studies teacher. The third group, Micro- nauts, helped students expand their knowledge of the com- puter world. It was sponsored by Mrs. Donna Gray, math- ematics teacher. Trials and Tribulations Trials and tribulations hounded the marching band on their trip to Florida A and M to perform at the Rattler Strike and the homecoming parade. They raised part of the money by selling raffle tickets; the band members paid for the other part out of their own pockets. Next there were problems with the buses breaking down once on the way there and once on the way back. But band members thought the trip was worth every minute of it. “The way the crowd accepted us made us feel good when we performed, said Kiphanie Radford, soph- omore. “Florida is a band city and Kansas City a drill team atmosphere.” While in Florida the drum majors were ranked second over all high school bands there. The band chose to go to Florida because Mr. Calvin Whitmore III graduated from there. “I knew Florida A and M had an outstanding marching band,” said Mr. Whitmore. “Also high school bands from across the country performed there.” Besides going to Florida the band collected several awards, Chaos! The Marching Blue Tigers prepare to put on the half time show. (Photo by Paul Newman) including first place in the Hispanic Day parade and first place as marching musical unit and second place in showman- ship at the Antioch Pre- American Royal parade. They also performed in the American Royal and Veteran Day parades and in Drill Team competition. The band felt good about their year. “I appreciate getting back to marching, since last year our program was cut short by the absence of Mr. Whit- more,” said Steven Mitchell, junior.
