SSR W + BEST sharpen skills at LA South Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down, pick up a book and read for a solid thirty minutes without being interrupted? It was easier done than said at Lincoln Academy which set up a new program called Uninterrupt- ed Sustained Silent Reading (U.S.S.R.) This program was set up to do just that. Giving each participant a chance to enhance his reading skill by setting aside a few minutes two days a week for reading and reading only. There were absolutely no inter- ruptions! Teachers, students, administrators, security guards and any other living thing capable of reading, used the U.S.S.R. period to ease the pressures of the day and read for pleasure. “Last year we successfully incorporated a Silent Reading and Writing Program into our daily instruction that had tremendous impact upon the student achievement level, said Dr. William Love, Dean of the South Campus. The purpose was to get people to do more reading. No one was asked to report what they read. The emphasis was allowing students to select whatever materials desired, picking from a variety offered by the Resource Center. The variety was changed occasionally to provide students with a variety of offerings. Debora Giles s. Improving basic skills through Sustained Silent Reading and Writing is featured in this South Campus front hall display. 18 South Campus
