Killer Price describes a play during a lull in the Homecoming Game. ie, encuAAance As days turned to weeks, a closer day was coming, and that date was August 25, 1982 where you would meet all the new students and teachers. You would get a chance to see what teachers were still here and what teachers were not and even which ones taught a different subject. Since Reagan had been cutting funds on the em- ployment programs, there were not many businesses or companies hiring. It really was hurting the seniors, because they would have to pay for announcements and class rings, all the good things that seniors purchase. For most students it would be a chance to see who was more into de- signer clothes or who was still wearing the plain pocket jeans and T shirts. “The Lee jeans are in style now, simply because they are sporty and they aren’t as expensive as designer jeans,” said Sheila Fitz- gerald, senior. Tracye Gee Theme 3 Felix Mitchell, junior, makes use of the card catalog in the Resource Center. Studying hard in Mrs. Cosette Kelly’s Language Development class are sophomores Marlene Hardin, Roo- sevelt Rambo, Cynthia Wilson, Jody Craddock, David McDonald and Tony Milton. encuSScince The school year was filled with many rebirths that affected the student body and faculty members as well. There were a lot of teachers laid off and new ones shipped in. “Many students were dis- couraged because of that but hung in there anyway,” said Leona Conway, junior. Dean William Rowan felt that an organization should have no more than one on-school-time activity a semester. “I felt that was not enough to keep the students motivated and spirited,” said Billy Hale, junior. Dean Rowan also expected the students to get more involved in various activities and tasks but didn’t allow enough time for students to complete the goals he set. Mr. Leo Wright, Bu- ilding Manager, said, “Students are writing on the walls more this year than before in markers that won’t come off by using just a little comet. You have to paint over the writing.” But Mr. Wright did have one good thing to say about the school year. “The students seem to get along much better than they did last year. There weren’t very many fights.” Tracye Gee 4 Opening Friendly rivalry raises money for the Christmas basket at the Student-Faculty basketball game. Sitting in the cold, watching the start of an exciting game made everyone anxious for halftime to come quick. We all were waiting for the big moment to come, wondering who was to be Homecoming Queen. We wished each other the best of luck and waited patient- ly for the time to come. Approaching halftime, I was beginning to feel nervous. As we waited on the track for the final moment, I began feeling relaxed because we knew there were just friends and alumni in the stands. As the underclass names were Photos by Ray Knutsen, Ronnie LaNear, Paul Newman being called, I said to myself, “I know I didn’t win because Marilyn and Irma had an advantage. Marilyn is a cheer- leader and Irma is a football manager and I’m just a loyal fan.” All the time something kept telling me that Marilyn was queen and Irma was first runner up and I was second runner up. We all three stood there waiting for the big moment. I heard the announcer say, Second runner up, Irma Salazar,” and I was really surprised. A smile came upon my face. The announcer waited for a moment, then said, “First runner up.” I knew it was me. It was too good to be true, but I was happy to be first runner up. As the announcer said, “The 1982-83 Homecoming Queen is Marilyn McGautha,” the big- gest smile was on her face and I was very happy for her. It was easier done than said at Lincoln Academy which set up a new program called Uninterrupt- ed Sustained Silent Reading (U.S.S.R.) This program was set up to do just that. Giving each participant a chance to enhance his reading skill by setting aside a few minutes two days a week for reading and reading only. There were absolutely no inter- ruptions! Teachers, students, administrators, security guards and any other living thing capable of reading, used the U.S.S.R. period to ease the pressures of the day and read for pleasure. “Last year we successfully incorporated a Silent Reading and Writing Program into our daily instruction that had tremendous impact upon the student achievement level, said Dr. William Love, Dean of the South Campus. The purpose was to get people to do more reading. No one was asked to report what they read. The emphasis was allowing students to select whatever materials desired, picking from a variety offered by the Resource Center. The variety was changed occasionally to provide students with a variety of offerings. Debora Giles s. Murder, rape, assault were the subjects of some of the social studies classes this year. Students of Mrs. Judy Morgan’s Crime and Delin- quency class go to a courtroom and actually see a trial in progress. A man was on trial for the murder of his girlfriend. Even though the students didn’t get to see the whole trial, they still had their own opinion of how it would turn out. Sherri Green, sophomore, said she thought the man should have been convicted. The students really enjoyed the trial. Lelaunda Austin, senior, said it was very interesting to find out how our judicial system works. But the trials were not just in real courtrooms. Mrs. Morgan had her own trial with the students, with the murder and witnesses, the judge and even the murder weapon. “The purpose of the trials is to show the students how it was to be in a trial and to be on trial,” Most of the students throught it was fun. Delmar Coppage, senior, said, “It had a lot of It all began with a trip to court to see an actual trial in process. This is an annual visit made by Mrs. Judy Morgan’s Crime and Delinquency classes. action, and it seemed very real. “It wasn’t like a regular class- room trial, it was unspeakable,” said Keith Johnson, senior. But when it came down to the decision of the jury, all the classes had their own opinion of how it would turn out. “It was a very interesting experience,” said Terri Neal, sophomore. “It made us think about other things going on around the world that could be very exciting, expecially when you’re involved.” Kim Thompkins OUIET COURT IN SESSION 22 Social Studies Being sworn in is serious business for witness Vanessa Brown, sophomore. Vanessa and her classmates took part in a mock trial in Mrs. Judy Morgan's Crime and Delinquency class. Other roles were played by LeLaunda Austin, Judge, Timothy Lona, Attorney, Latonya Hill, Baliff. ' Behind these doors, a man was on trial. Students had a first-hand look at how the judicial system operates. Everywhere you look students are taking charge. They’re working in the office, library, bookroom, even the classroom. That’s right, Debora Blosser, senior, has begun teaching for a grade’ “I needed something to do for a project in my GT science class. Mrs. Miriam Simon suggested I teach South Campus students to run and operate computers,” said Debbie. “It’s not really a class, it’s more like a seminar or group session,” said Mrs. Nancy Fellinger, South Campus teacher. The students seem to enjoy the class. “I like working with Debbie,” said Julia Holmes, eighth grader. “She’s a great influence on all of us.” “The class is entirely run by Debbie,” said Mr. Wholf. “I offer no assistance whatsoever. I watch her work from time to time, but I never get in the way.” Debbie is trying to give the students some type of an edge. Our world is one of technology and intelligence. “By the time we’re out into the world and begin setting our goals, this nation will be completely and entirely computerized,” said William “Billy” Watson, eighth grader. Students in Debbie’s class are Tony McClosky, Tammy Shepard, Lori McCallop, Kim Kndred, Ameer Khan, Theordos Logan, Carl Sharp, Delisa Rooks, Robert Meier, Clay- ton Rainey, Steve Snowden, Julia Holmes, and Billy Wat- son. Michael Brown During a computer programming class, Mrs. Donna Gray helps out a student with his program. 24 Computers In a teaching session with Lincoln South students, senior Debra Blosser drills the class on what they have learned. Students learn The American Cablevision of Kansas City, Inc. has added another program to its schedule. The program is called “The Generation Rap.” It involves teenagers and adults talking about current issues and its technical crew is made up of students from Lincoln Academy North, with supervision by GT Coordinator, Miriam Simon. The crew members are Seniors Janet MacDonald, Walter Youngblood, junior Dennis Burk, sophomores Shawn Gentry, Vicki Davis, Justina Robinson, Monica Tindall, Clarisa Reynolds and fresh- men Ellen Binder, Susan Blevins, Lisa Fillpot, Todd Norris, Dennis Price and Craig Tyson. The students are in charge of cameras, audio, video, switcher, TV world promotions, with some direct- ing the technical crew and production. “We were tired of just watching tv and not knowing how programs were made, we decided then to find out how,” said producer Monica Tindall. The students not only learn how the pro- grams are made but make it possible for everyone to see their program once a week for a half hour. Lincoln is the only school in KC to have the opportunity of working with Cablevision this way. Summing it all up best Monica Tindall said “When working with Cablevision we handle a lot of precious equip- ment and take on a lot of responsibilities which may be helpful for any job.” Pernell Carr Last minute adjustments to the switch- board by producer Monica Tindall is viewed by director Shawn Gentry. Jobs for Missouri Graduates is designed to teach students the basic essentials of finding the right job and how to keep it. “Basically our job is to make students aware of job searching skills. We make them aware of community employ- ment and give them some type of career path,” said adviser Ms. Janet Watson. Xinos, a sorority sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary teachers fraternity, was formed to help high school ladies higher their goals of education and help make their and other communities better. They held a bake sale and visited Swope Ridge Nursing Home and Zion Grove Church. The group was sponsored by Mrs. Helen Ragsdale, social studies teacher. But band members thought the trip was worth every minute of it. “The way the crowd accepted us made us feel good when we performed, said Kiphanie Radford, soph- omore. “Florida is a band city and Kansas City a drill team atmosphere.” While in Florida the drum majors were ranked second over all high school bands there. The band chose to go to Florida because Mr. Calvin Whitmore III graduated from there. “I knew Florida A and M had an outstanding marching band,” said Mr. Whitmore. “Also high school bands from across the country performed there.” Besides going to Florida the band collected several awards, Chaos! Success? loniquc Drake! Acting, the ability to per- form, is a God-given talent given to only a few chosen people. One of these people is Monique Drake, a junior who is making a name for herself. Monique has serious plans about pursuing dramatics as a career. She has been in debate for three years and says that there are some advantages and disad- vantages of being a part of the group. “Acting calls for con- stant practice and commitment, but it’s well-worth the try,” said Monique, “because I like to get attention.” This year Monique ranked first out of 88 participants in a forensics tournament at Ruskin High School. She also won first place in an oratory speech on child abuse. Monique was motivated by Carol Burnett. However, she likes drama better than comedy. The key to being good at what she does is that she has to make herself the person in the situation, “I have to try to forget who I am so that what I am doing will be effective,” she said. This year at the talent show she did an excerpt from the Broadway play “For Colored Girls Only Who Have Considered Suicide when the Rainbow Is Not Enough.” “I had to pretend that I was a mother who didn’t want her children to be killed,” she said. Leading cheers at a pep assembly or a game gave the cheerleaders the satisfaction of knowing that they were rousing the spirit in everyone they cheer to. Everyone thinks cheerleading is all fun and games but Renee Gardner, varsity cheerleader, knows it is not. “The cheering association wasn’t as organized as it could have been,” she said. “Therefore things didn’t go as smoothly as they did during my previous years as a cheer- leader.” The cheerleaders had a new sponsor this year, Mrs. Lois Malone, Debate and English teacher. Mrs. Malone took a huge responsibility this year. She agreed to be the sponsor of 23 cheerleaders, a job which demanded a lot of time and dedication. “A sponsor shouldn’t show favoritism, but should treat everyone the same,” said Marilyn McGautha, varsity cheerleader. If a sponsor is going to go by the cheerleading rules, these rules should be enforced all year and not at one particular time. Jason Duckworth, junior, thought the cheerleaders did a good job. “I think the ladies contributed very much to all the athletic events they cheered in,” he said. “I think I am speaking for all athletes in saying that we really appreciate the support and pride that the cheerleaders bestow on us and in the crowd.” Christina Robinson Yell Leaders Brian Kearney, John Hammond, Steven Burton, Andre Pugh, Martez Gardner, Lorenzo Hammond, Paul Tancredi 34 Cheerleaders Take hold! They decided that they would like to get better at their programming skills and to enter more contests. “To be a Micronaut, one has to be a top-notch programmer,” said Mrs. Gray. “Being a first year computer student, I feel it was an honor being asked to be a Micronaut,” said Marc Evans. The reason many teammembers left was, “because of personality conflicts with coach Essie Daniels,” said senior Latonya Davis. This was the biggest reason the team did not play well. Christina Robinson, senior, felt otherwise, “I felt we had very little communication on the floor between players.” Despite the conflicts the team finished strong. After that the team didn’t get better, losing eight straight, the Tigers finally won one by beating O’Hara 49 to 44. There could be many reasons why the Tigers did not play up to their expectations. “I feel the lack of confidence among the team caused a lot of problems”, commented junior Damon Hopkins. “Not only that but the lack of experience has been the major problem,” continued Damon. Losing all but one of last season’s players, the Blue Tigers coached by Samuel Cofield had to rebuild the team’ Getting the ball was the intention of junior Ronald Hammons. The money is not all that’s needed for our Blue Tigers, with the team loss of experience players, the team was left desperate. Luckily, someone answered the Tiger’s prayers, with newcomers such as John Brooks, Kevin Lucas, and Phillip Taylor. There’s no stopping those Tigers now! Returning players include seniors; Delmar “Buster” Coppage, Robert L. Smith, Antoin Foster, juniors; Royce Allen, Lacy Eldridge, Elgie Hurd, Jason Duckworth, Miguel Warren, Jim Messick, Brent Marley, Jeff Davis, and sophomores Oliver Hurd, Anthony Tatum, Martez Gardner. Manager Irene Salazar com- mented on the coming season, “We’re going to take state this year.” Whatever the outcome may be the Blue Tigers will be number 1 in Lincoln Academy’s heart. These girls are Irma and Irene Salazar. They’ve been at Lincoln since their ninth grade year. Since then they’ve been work- ing in any capacity where they are needed. This year Irene was president of the senior class and Irma was vice- president of Honor Society. Irma was also football man- ager. After four years people still get them confused with each other. “I get a little frustrated when people still get us confused,” said Irma. To cut down on complication, Irma got her hair cut, but that still didn’t help matters. People still got confused. One question people like to ask twins is did you ever change classes with one another? “Only when we were young,” they said, “but not since then.” Ten years from now they won’t even look alike. Competition is fierce among top students all over the country for scholarships. Elizabeth Kohler has succeeded in reaching the semi-finalist stage of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship competition. This honor was bestowed upon her on the basis of her preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test scores. “I didn’t do any special studying,” said Elizabeth. “I just participated regularly in class work and had some preparatory courses in the Summer Scholars Program.” How to take the test is almost as important as what you know, Elizabeth thinks. Some of her test-taking tips are “Keep calm; don’t get so involved in the test that you forget about school work.” Elizabeth hopes to become a finalist and then go on to win a scholarship.
