His death brought Mexicans, ranchers and a few easterners to Arizona. It appeared for a while that the ranch manager, Guldy, (Floyd Reed) would fall heir to the ranch, but the will was found. Larry Benson, (Tyree Tolson)who was adopted by Colonel Blair as a child, falls in love with Lettie (Doris Stewart), an Easterner, and learns that he inherits the ranch. Guldy is revealed as an escaped convict. Adding color to the operetta were the antics of two Mexicans sweethearts-Carlotts (Jacqueline Welton) and Antonio (Michael Price). Carlos, (Oliver Rogers) a great hearted Mexican, staged a picturesque gay fiesta that almost was a show within a show. Maria (Sharon Pennington), tearful servant, cried over everybody’s troubles. Further romance was created when Rennie (James Marshall) fell in love instantly with pretty Easterner, Emily (Jamesetta Cameron) and when big handsome Arizona Tom (Hirby Ivy) took for his bride an Indian maiden, Tonita Sunrise. (Octavia Swain) 90 Cowboys, Cappy (David Morgan) and Bertie (Darthard Perry), were hilarious in their parts. Teammates followed the lead of Johnny Young and Vernon Vanoy, two seasoned and experienced players. Fans will remember for a long time the excitement and thrill of victory when both Central and Westport suffered defeat at the claws of the Tigers for the first time in league history. Four defeats were easier to take when measured against these two victories. Vanoy earned a place on 1st all- city team and 2nd all-state team. Young earned a place on the 2nd all-city team and honorable mention on all-district. Tigers will lose the following seniors: Vanoy, Young, Neal, Holland, Motley, Fuller, Martin, Ivy and Prymus. 116 VARSITY Row 1 L-R Calvin Watson, Gary Brown, Ronald Franks, Charles Hubbard, Herbie Ivy, Vernon Vanoy, James Motley, Richard Franks, Robert Hishaw, Joe Fuller, Gary Black Duane Reese, Diamond Warren, Clyde Smith, John Young, Row 2 L-R Coach Buford, Russell Davis, Phillip Jacobs, James Neal, Coach West SCOREBOARD We They 20 East 20 20 Central 14 7 Southeast 28 32 Northeast 13 6 Van Horn 27 7 Westport 6 13 Southwest 40 21 Sumner 33 117 B-TEAM Row 1 L-R Gregory Graves, John Taylor, Raymond Moore, Chester Parks, Samuel Bittle, R. They had hoped to at least share 1st place. Late in the season, lady luck's smile changed to a frown and Central knocked them out. The starting five Vanoy, Young, Neal, Warren, and Motley carried the team to victory after victory. Though somethimes cold and off key Neal and Motley managed to warm up the other three. The 62-61 victory over Southwest was the most exciting game of the season.
