Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1963 volume:

3 THE LINCOLNIAN LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI The Story of Sixty-Three The story of Sixty-Three, like preceding stories, is the story of a school with deep, strong, and productive roots. More important, it is the story of boys and girls proud of the depth, strength and productiveness of their roots; secure in the knowledge that as they have nutured so will they nuture them. It is, also, the story of dedicated and inspired teachers and administrators, who give of their time and energies freely and enthusiastically. For they are motivated by love for and devotion to duty. Adventures in learning and growing up took up the greater part of the time. Concentrated study was provided to develop our minds; desirable play activities were provided to develop our bodies; worthwhile leisure time activities were provided to develop our spiritual, esthestic and moral being. A peek in the classrooms shows some of us busily engaged in reading, writing and arithmetic. Another peek will show study on a more advanced level--in the science laboratory, in the language laboratory, in the homemaking laboratory, in the photographic dark room or in the drafting room. Clubs of various kinds complement work in the classroom and make adventures in learning and growing-up pleasant and enjoyable. All good things must come to an end and so it is with our high school education. But this is not the end of our story. Graduation marks the end of childhood and adolescence and signals the beginning of adulthood. We are certain that the nature of adulthood will be influenced greatly by the experiences of our childhood and adolescence. We do not fear the future; we welcome it with courage and enthusiasm. Table of Contents Administration Faculty Students Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen 10 20 Activities ................................................70 Sports.................................................... HO 4 This, my last message to you, through the pages of the Lincolnian, is one of hope and challenge for the future. At no time in the history of civilization has there been more opportunity for work for men and women of competence and integrity. Any person who does his job well with efficiency and skill can find employment, provided he has the personal qualifications to merit selection by an employer. This is particularly true of jobs requiring intelligence and or skill. For nearly 45 years it has been my joy and pleasure to serve the youth and their parents of this community. I shall miss the challenge of helping young minds and personalities grow and develop. I leave the schoolroom for a new challenge and an opportunity to serve. I shall miss the bright eyes and eager faces of youth, but I sincerely believe the new challenge I now have accepted will be beneficial to a larger segment of our city. So while I regret leaving close friends, 1 am intrigued and challenged by a new and greater opportunity. I also look forward to an even greater Lincoln High School under a new administrator. 10 Earl D. Thomas ANN JOHNSON Vice-Principal CHARLES B. WEST Counselors JOHN EASON Faculty CHESTER R. Seniors Bid Adieu to Lincoln Four years have rolled by and now we stand on the threshold of graduation. However, it seems only yesterday that we entered the doors of the Castle on the Hill. While we look forward to com- mencement with eagerness, we look back- ward with nostalgia. Memories of frightened, bewildered freshmen still remain with us. We, like all new freshmen everywhere, found it difficult to adjust to new surroundings in a large high school. This natural state passed quickly because our teachers were friendly and helpful. Adaptation paved the way for whole- hearted participation in school activities outside the classroom. As sophomores we joined clubs, played sports and won honors for ourselves and Lincoln. We inaugurated the Sophomore Hop . During our junior and senior years we increased participation in clubs, or- anizations, sports and cultural activities, udy House won an excellent award in the annual Science Fair. And for two con- secutive years, Patricia Patrick won first place in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. Five girls became members of the 110 Girls Club; eleven of us were inducted into the National Honor Society. The Junior-Senior play was exceptionally good and the Junior-Senior prom was unforgettable. Seniors played an import- ant part in defeating Rosedale High School on the televised program Categories . We could go on and on but we have learned to be modest. Modesty does not prevent our giving fifteen cheers for the class of '63, fifteen cheers for the faculty and fif- teen cheers for Lincoln High School. 20 Class Of 1963 WAYNE ANDERSON GERALD MORRIS BARBER 4 Year Band Award and Or- chestra, Red Cross. Bad Luck Stalks Tigers Loyal Lincolnites rooted as usual but the rooting had little or no effect on the Tigers. Just recently out of the cellar, the boys lost three game before winning a 13-7 victory over Paseo. This bit of luck was reversed the following week and thereafter four consecutive games ended in defeat. The season closed with a 7-0 victory over Sumner. Tigers will play next year without Melvin Stewart, Kenneth Speese, Jay Butts, Gene Clay, Curtis Burton, Jerome Fields, Jewell Hogan and Charles Breckenridge. In spite of the over all standing of the team, four men finished with honor. Melvin Stewart and Kenneth Speese made the All-City Team—Stewart, 1st Team; Speese, 2nd Team. Courtmen Falter Tigers on the court won some tough games but lost too many that were not so tough. Thus they failed to live up to expectations. Coach Rowan believes that the boys could have played better ball. However, they made a definite improvement over last year's record. In spite of outstanding performance by Young, Vanoy, Moore, Garrett, and Butts, courtmen suffered from a lack of poise and '’seasoning. Several good men will bid adieu to the gold and blue in June.
