Three years and ten months ago the elementary schools of Kan- sas City sent forth hundreds of graduates, drilled in the three R's and im- bued with the idea that they would graduate from Lincoln High School. Now most of them have achieved that goal and are ready to discover whether that group, or any group so inspired and so educated, can meet with future prob- lems. We are assembled at the close of our public school training We are ready like those before who Junes ago faced this same step that we might follow after. It is altogether appropriate and necessary that we do this. And summoning up our strength, we shall exalt, we shall ennoble, we shall hold high the name of Lincoln. The Class of '52, boys and girls, who studied here, will do their best to bring her fame. The faculty will soon forget what we write here, but they will never forget that we have been here. It is for us, the Class of '52, to keep in mind the precepts which they, who so selflessly instructed us, so patiently imparted. It is for us, the Class of '52, to be so mindful of their instruction—that from their efforts we take renewed cour- age to face the tasks that lie ahead—that we firmly resolve that they have not taught in vain—that memories of us shall always linger—and that the glory of old Lincoln, her students, and of this class shall increase upon this earth. Williams, instructor of vocal music, the Lincoln High School chorus has established an enviable record in the city and in the neighboring communities. The Driver Education class does a bit of research in automobile anatomy PAGE FORTY-FIVE Athletics FOOTNOTES ON SPORTS This year the pen in addition to praising all of Lincoln's athletes would like to give special attention to the greats produced during the '51-'52 season. In football, with new coaches Lee, Wilson, McCreary and a new team, the critics expected the fear which has to come to the minds of opponents in the past to vanish completely; but out came a bruising line and crushing backs. Consequently, this surprise force of '51 punishingly restored respect and aroused fear among all opponents. One of the main reasons for the suc- cessful season was the fine individual play of Captain Eugene Banty Hen- drix, Wilbert Crusher Crockett, and Richard Hoss Bradley. These all- city and all-state selections have been sought by several colleges within the area. Everybody who has seen their play is sure that they will be a big help to whatever college each attends. The giants of the hardwood redeemed themselves at the State Tourna- ment after an inauspicious season at home. It's a task to single out any out- standing players, but, in agreeing with the judges who chose Kenneth John- son and Eugene Hendrix as all-state players at the State Tournament, the pen would like to add LaVern Hart, an excellent all-round player, for such a player should be on the list of essentials of a basketball team. The pen also salutes their fine coach, Perry Kirkpatrick. Coach Lenel Mason, whose cinder burners have won the championship at the Missouri State Track Meet during the past two years, is expected to coach them to another first place in '52. Some of the players expected to retain the reputation of Lincoln on the track are Alfred Walker, William Smith, Henry McAdams, Wilbert Crockett, Robert Burns, and Franklin Hol- man. Eugene Hendrix and Jesse Rogers will bear the load in the field events. So you see, in spite of some dark moments, Lincoln has held her own and has been outstanding in athletics in Missouri and surrounding states. THE PEN.
