FOREWORD — Each school year has something unique that distinguishes it from any other school year. This year was no exception. Several physical changes to the building had taken place when school opened on August 19. The foyer had been decorated to depict the planets, and a white ROCKET had been inlaid in a blue tile floor, passing through the Limestone galaxy. Our new onboard computers were being scrutinized by a wary faculty. Anyone looking up could see a new roof being applied. And in the old building fluorescent lighting had replaced the globe fixtures. Getting down to earth.” the Joe Griffith Baseball Field was being sodded. In the shop there were physical changes, too. The metal shop was equipped with a new ventilation system, and the wood shop had a vacuum attached to each machine to cut down on dust particles. In the gymnasium we acquired a new scoreboard to register victories for the Blue and White. There was a new divider curtain on the gym balcony. And before long we were getting used to a new fire alarm system with its strange sound. The physical changing continued into early spring. In a move to conserve energy the glass blocks on the old building disappeared under a covering of tan and brown siding. During the winter a change took place in Washington. D.C.. with the inauguration of a new President of the United States. while on the same eventful day we listened to radios and watched television in the snack bar as the hostages were released from their long captivity in Iran. In the area of achievement. the football season was a victory for all. The Rockets beat the Rams for the second year in a row and won their first Homecoming game in thirteen years. The girls’ basketball team went to sectionals again, only to be denied the chance to go any further by the Richwoods Knights. The boys' basketball team finished well. Three teachers received outstanding honors. Mr. Hagenbuch was one of the top eight teachers in the state of Illinois, and Mr. McCraith was named Teacher of the Year by his state vocational association. The National High School Coaches' Association selected Mr. Gross as Coach of the Year in a district which includes Illinois. Indiana. Ohio. Michigan, and Wisconsin. In the closing days of the 1980-1981 school year another change was emerging. Our affilation of many years with the Mid-State Ten Conference was nearing an end. and in years to come LCHS will be part of a new and exciting conference. The rivalries with Manual. Central. Richwoods and the others of the Mid-State 10 will be replaced with a still-to-be defined new group of competitors. The 1980-1981 AMULET recaptures the ups and downs of this school year in pictures and will preserve our memories for years to come. 2
