This year was no exception. Several physical changes to the building had taken place when school opened on August 19. The foyer had been decorated to depict the planets, and a white ROCKET had been inlaid in a blue tile floor, passing through the Limestone galaxy. Our new onboard computers were being scrutinized by a wary faculty. Anyone looking up could see a new roof being applied. And in the old building fluorescent lighting had replaced the globe fixtures. Getting down to earth.” the Joe Griffith Baseball Field was being sodded. In the shop there were physical changes, too. The metal shop was equipped with a new ventilation system, and the wood shop had a vacuum attached to each machine to cut down on dust particles. In the gymnasium we acquired a new scoreboard to register victories for the Blue and White. There was a new divider curtain on the gym balcony. And before long we were getting used to a new fire alarm system with its strange sound. The physical changing continued into early spring. In a move to conserve energy the glass blocks on the old building disappeared under a covering of tan and brown siding. During the winter a change took place in Washington. D.C.. with the inauguration of a new President of the United States. while on the same eventful day we listened to radios and watched television in the snack bar as the hostages were released from their long captivity in Iran. In the area of achievement. the football season was a victory for all. The Rockets beat the Rams for the second year in a row and won their first Homecoming game in thirteen years. The girls’ basketball team went to sectionals again, only to be denied the chance to go any further by the Richwoods Knights. The boys' basketball team finished well. Three teachers received outstanding honors. Mr. Hagenbuch was one of the top eight teachers in the state of Illinois, and Mr. McCraith was named Teacher of the Year by his state vocational association. The National High School Coaches' Association selected Mr. Gross as Coach of the Year in a district which includes Illinois. Indiana. Ohio. Michigan, and Wisconsin. In the closing days of the 1980-1981 school year another change was emerging. Our affilation of many years with the Mid-State Ten Conference was nearing an end. and in years to come LCHS will be part of a new and exciting conference. The rivalries with Manual. Central. Richwoods and the others of the Mid-State 10 will be replaced with a still-to-be defined new group of competitors. The 1980-1981 AMULET recaptures the ups and downs of this school year in pictures and will preserve our memories for years to come. 2 i -A I V vovr , £ £ Q CLI c c 0 0 Crf C£ Sportsmanship, Pride, and Compassion Shedding pride for compassion. Mr. Knezovich turns over to the crippled children the five hundred dollars he generated by taking a pie in the face. Senior Andy Legaspi and Junior. DEDICATION Among the ups” on our roller coaster ride is the opportunity to dedicate the 1981 AMULET to a respected teacher for many years at Limestone High School. Each year this choice becomes more difficult. One has to decide what qualities deserve a yearbook dedication. Distinguished service, outstanding sportsmanship in all areas, exceptional teaching and academic standards, are all meritable qualities and only together do they describe a candidate for the yearbook dedication. We are aware of the increasing pressures on classroom teachers to lower standards, sugar coat their teaching, and scatter A's and B s generously across report cards. But the real challenge of good teaching remains the extraction of the best of each student’s ability. Our candidate was selected with these criteria in mind. During his college days at Bradley University he was chosen to the Little-AII-American football team his junior year. The following year he was selected to the Chicago Tribune All-Star football team, playing the Chicago Bears. These accomplishments were little steps leading on to a rewarding teaching and coaching career. His first teaching position was held in 1943 at East Peoria High School where he taught mechanical drawing and physical education for 3 years. During his short stay there, he developed 3 all state football players, took East Peoria’s first track team to state competition, and met his future wife. After an absence from teaching for 15 years he began teaching at Limestone High School in the Industrial Arts and P.E. departments and once again he excelled in the area of sports. He coached Sophomore football for 3 years, his last season was undefeated winning the Illini and then Mid-State 8 conferences. He has been officiating football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and the tug-of-war since 1956 and since 1964 has been coaching the golf team whose potential state golfers have had many victories. All these events that have taken place in his life are very recognizable and commendable! But this man has many other victories large and small to be proud of. He is an unselfish and compassionate man. giving to others that are less fortunate. In his years at Limestone he has demonstrated all the qualities, and more, of an exceptional person, teacher, athlete, and coach. It is a privilege to have this man on our Staff at Limestone High School. For your contributions to good sportsmanship, fair play, dedication in your teaching and coaching abilities, we at Limestone High School dedicate this year’s AMULET to you. MR. To achieve this philosophy the department offers courses to meet the needs of the non-college-bound student as well as the student who plans to continue his education at a higher level. For the non-college-bound, courses are designed to sharpen computational skills and to provide practical applications of mathematics to everyday life. For students who are planning on furthering their education, courses are designed to meet college entrance requirements as well as for further study in the field of mathematics. Mrs. Savage and Mr. Perschnick investigate the possible uses of micro-computers in their areas. 182 During the tug-of-war. Mrs. Johnson shouts cheers of encouragement to the faculty team. Physical Education Department I jr 1 u Physical Education, an integral part of the total education process, is a field of endeavor which has as its aim the development of physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially fit citizens through the medium of physical activities which have been selected with a view to realizing these outcomes. Physical education is not a frill or an ornament which has been tacked on to the school program as a means of keeping the students busy. It is. instead, a vital part of education. Through a well-directed physical education program, students develop skills for the worthy use of leisure time, engage in activity which is conductive to healthful living, develop socially, and contribute to their physical and mental health. In keeping with the scientific revolution. Limestone High School has developed a science curriculum whose intent is to present a body of facts, attitudes, concepts, and understanding that will prepare students for life in our modern world. It is necessary to continue changing and adding to knowledge to keep up with the rapidly increasing mass of scientific information. The science curriculum provides students sufficient background to understand their environment meaning the balance of nature, the importance of conservation, the physical and mechanical things which make industry possible and. most essential, an understanding of themselves for better health and happier lives. In addition, students are informed about science occupations for which they begin preparing themselves here at Limestone Community High School. 184 Mr. Thierer. who shares his time with the math department, uses the micro-computer for a classroom demonstration. Social Studies Department The Social Studies Department realizes a dual responsibility concerning our students, which has developed as a result of an everchanging and complex American society. We place a prime emphasis on creating a responsible citizen. This sense of responsibility is hopefully achieved by the student in a variety of course offerings. These courses are intended to draw comparisons of the American form of government with other governments, past and present. These courses also highlight significant events in our past and present and the effect these events may have on the future. The Social Studies Department also feels a deep responsibility for instilling within the student an understanding and development of a strong self-concept. Courses are offered to give the student an insight not only into his own behavior but also the behavior of others. It endeavors to give to the student those tools necessary to become a positive addition to the Amer- ican way of life and to achieve a satisfactory sense of self- worth. Special education is built on the concept of understanding unusual differences among the school age population and meeting individual needs. In order to plan subsequent programs for these students a multi-disciplinary approach is often used. This team may call for the services of medical, psychological, social work, educational, and other personnel in order to carry out appropriate programs. The Special Education Association of Peoria County through Limestone High School provides a variety of services including pre-vocational counseling, in-school work experience, on-the-job adjustment training and follow-up. These services are offered in combination with a practical and flexible academic program which may include special classroom work and integration into selected courses within the normal curriculum. Mrs. Yvonne Myers Teacher Aide I 86 dance during the Guidance Department The Guidance Department of Limestone High School tends to think of teaching, guidance, curriculum, and learning as fundamental and inter-related elements of education. All are so closely integrated that one cannot function without the other. The goals of the curriculum and of guidance are essentially the same. The important focus is on the individual learner. A realization that each individual is unique and has his own rate of physical, mental, and emotional development and requires differential treatment is basic in thinking of guidance personnel. The preparation of the individual for a place in society as a contributing member is the all-important role of the school. The success of a guidance program rests with administrators, classroom teachers, counselors, nurse, pupils, parents and community. Guidance is both a group and an individual process with special emphasis on the individual. There is continuous adjustment of the curriculum, techniques, and methods of instruc- tion to meet the needs of the student body. A guidance program needs to be constantly in a state of evaluation. Special provisions must be made for those pupils with serious difficulties which impede learning and adjustment. Referral is made to various local agencies as the need arises.
