Whena school of1.600students has a crowd of almost 6.000 at a basketball game, that's support! When local businesses take down usual advertising and put up slogans like. When put to the test. Limestone Girls are above the rest. that's support I When those 1.600 students get S-IO out of Mom and Pad to go to Champaign and when the L imestone cheering section is filled to the rafters, that s support! Perhaps the proudest moment Limestone Community High School has ever seen was on March 30.1979. when the clock was lowered from the top of the Assembly Hall on the U of I campus in Champaign Llrbana and the name Limestone was put in the scoreboard slots. The next four quarters saw L imestone deep in foul trouble and down by nine points at two different times and then rally to lead by four points with only 30 seconds left in the game. At the end of regulation time, the score was 59 - 59. Described by many as the longest three minutes of their life, the overtime lead wavered back and forth between Limestone and Oak forest, with Oak forest pulling ahead 67 - 70 at the final whistle. How did the lady Rockets' get there7 Well, the season began with the Dixon Tournament. Limestone lost to Freeport 71 - 69 in overtime, but they later won the consolation championship. Only two other season losses to Rich woods and Galesburg marred the Rockets' record. A new school record was set by defeating Normal 97 - 27. The Rockets' only conference loss was to Rich woods. REGIONAL TOURNAMENT L imestone out scored Morton in the third quarter and won the Regional Championship. Sarah MuzzareUi led all scorers with 2S points. The Rockets ’ won with a score of 79 - 49. and enjoyed a memorable escort home. SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT The Rockets 'were to play Richwoods. to whom they had lost the conference championship, or Lincoln, who had beaten them the previous year in Supersectionals. As many as 2.800 fans saw Limestone defeat Lincoln 61 ■ 56. The Railers couldn't score two baskets in a row without a Limestone basket sandwiched in between them. The Superintendent of Washington wished us luck, and the bandwagon had definitely gotten underway. SUPERSECTIONAL The Rockets' scored 24 easy points and crusted to an SI - 56 victory. Jacksonville fans were stunned at a 32 ■ 4 first quarter score. The crowd's favorite chant was. Here we come Champaign! Here we come!!! ELITE EIGHT Champaignains called Limestone the Cinderella team. One ISHA member called the Rockets’ the best-looking and best-disciplined team in the tournament. Although LCHS entered with the worst record, they came out number one in everyone's book. Greg Wells. John Hawkins. Gary McIntosh, and Mr. Hutinger gladly became Limestone's first male cheerleaders as 5.867 fans came to Champaign to cheer the Rockets in the second game on Friday afternoon. Niles West eventually won the tournament. Niles West fans happened to be sitting next to L imestone. and soon became Rocket fans, as the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, the cheers of the crowd, and the referee's whistle were all felt in the last thirty-five seconds of overtime play. Everyone and anyone connected with Limestone said the same thing. We'll be back next year. Limestone Girls made several new records this year: ' first LCH5 team to ever compete in two consecutive Supersectionals. first LCHS team to ever make it to Elite Eight or Champaign first M-S 10 girls team to ever make it to Champaign first L CHS team to beat an opponent by 70 point Si against Normal 97 - 27. Limestone Board Of Education The Board of Education is composed of seven persons elected by residents of the high school district. Each person is elected for a three-year term. Regular meetings are held twice each month. Board members sometimes choose to run for re-election. On the current board, one member has served since 1971. The newest member was elected in 1978. Among the responsibilities of the Board are the many decisions that must be made in spending over two million dollars annually in the educational and operational funds of the school. In addition to their formal activities as board members, they also show their interest in the high school by their attendance at plays, athletic events, and other school activities. The president of the Board traditionally hands out diplomas to the graduating seniors at Commencement. Air. And one lear «.all for me' And may there lx- no moaning of the bar. When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep. Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again Itome. Twilight and evening hell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of fare- well. When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far. I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. — Tennyson Junior Peter Craig DeLorme July 28, 1961 September II, 1978 Sophomore Larry Thomas Hutchinson April 5, 1961 August 28, 1978 i 33-J 255 Hi WALSWORTH MimliW, Mo.. r.S.A.
