Has Distinctive Landmarks Widely Known . . . Miss Emmie Evans You have been our friend. You have instilled in us pride in our school and ourselves, and shown us an enthusiasm for life. You have cared, and this we will always remember. We see in you that which we would like to see in ourselves. Each of us will carry with us a special memory of one who was our friend, counselor, and teacher. These past four years would have been lacking without youafor you have cheerfully and unselfishly given of yourself. The little things showed us that you caredadoughnuts and hot chocolate, spaghetti suppers, kind words, and even parking tickets. Because you are yourself we have come to love and respect you. And so we prepare to leave, taking with us what you have come to symbolize to all of us. To y0u, Miss Emmie Evans, we, the class of 1965, are proud to dedicate The Calciid in the hope that in some small way you will know how deeply we appreciate all that you are and have been to us. FM ll HIFY AN D A 1 MM 1 NISTRATION Dr. Andrew Jackson Eastwood was born in Clarksville, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Following completion of his studies in the public school system of Virginia, Dr. Eastwood received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Richmond. Economics was his chosen field while he was doing graduate work at the University of Virginia, where he received two degrees: Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy. For four years Dr. Eastwood served as high school principal in Virginia. He held the position of Assistant Professor Of Commerce at William and Mary College and Assistant Professor of Economics and Commerce at Hillsdale College in Michigan. Dr. Eastwood came to Limestone College in 1932 as Professor of History. Here he met Miss Winnie Wingo who, on October 4, 1934, became his wife. Dr. Eastwood had truly found a home. He became Acting President of Limestone College on April 1, 1953, and President on June 1, 1953. All of these facts fail to indicate just how much Dr. and Mrs. Eastwood have contributed to the Limestone Look. Their warm perso'nalities help daily to bring about the friendly atmosphere that is so much a part of Limestone. PRESIDENT AND MRS. For these, we thank you. Because of these, the Limestone student will long remember you. ROBERT DUNCAN BASS B.A.; M.A.; Ph.D. English; A. LOUISE ACNEW B.A.; M.A.; Ph.D. Chemistry ALBERT C. Gloomy and tragic it was to see the lowly ttratsh performing stunts for the presiding judges and upperclassmen spectators. Power Biggs as hAmericak F oremost Organist? This honorary title is certainly well deserved by one who thrilled 'the Limestone audience with se- lections from such composers as Bach, Handel, and Mendelssohn. Mr. Biggs combined his outstanding skill and delightful personality in giving us a program which greatly enhanced this year,s con- cert series. Halina Siedzieniewska, outstanding Polish pi- anist, presented a most enjoyable evening of en- tertainment. Displaying extraordinary skill, Miss Siedzienjewska delighted her audience with se- lections from Bach, Scarlatti, Beethoven, and Cho- pin. This performance was not one to be soon for- gotten. Town and Gown Series A splash of color and an exciting rhythm united with a background of exuberant song and skillful guitar manipulation produced the unique performance by Jose Molina and his troop of Spanish dancers: The great virtuosity of footwork displayed in the Soleares, Sequidillas, Bolero, 'and J ota dances appeared incomparable. The Spanish flavor was again displayed in the performance of Carlos Montoya, flamenco guitarist. Arresting rhythms, uniquely conveyed, delighted listeners with a most unusual sound. The variety of selections was both pleasing and in- teresting and added to the lasting impression of this performance. 94 F ine Arts Festival Charlotte gives through poetry. her glimpse of autumn Willie Snow Ethridge brightened the campus with her wit. The Fine Arts Festival, an annual event, gives special emphasis to such cul- tural areas as literature, music, painting, and drama. These fields of cultural en- deavor were well represented by such out- standing personalities as Miss Willie Snow Ethridge, author and humorist, Luca Di Ceoco, cellist, and Carlos Montoya, world- renowned flamenco guitarist. Thme artists delighted students and guests with their talents. Members of the student body, fac- ulty, and local townspeople also contribut- ed their creative abilities to make this a most meaningful cultural experience. Sidewalk Art Show in City Park. Highlight of the Festival was a visit by the noted American composer, Vincent Persichetti, presently head of the composition department of the Julliard School of Music in New York. The Festival opened with a choral concert featuring two works by Mr. Persichettie-the MASS for mixed voices and the SPRING CAN- TATA. The following morning Mr. Persichetti spoke to the entire student body about his life as a composer and of music in the world today. More of Mr. PersichettYs compositions were performed at the faculty recital the next eveningeThe 9th PIANO SONATA and the SONATA FOR ORGAN, along with compositions by the noted composers Gian-Carlo Menotti and David Burge. They realize the importance of the contri- butions that the resident hall program makes in the life of the students. The more tangible aspects include makeup and good grooming. Yet, there is that certain something called poise which marks the division. The following pictures are dedicated to that creature who has the necessary qualifications to bot-a lady. Just the correct amount of make-up . . . . . . care in grooming l84 Editor9s Epilogue IiMy house says to me, IDo not leave me, for here dwells your past? And the road says to me, ICome and follow me, for I am your future? ,, We must take the road now and leave behind our beloved Limestone. But the Itlookiiawfhat Limestone LookIl, we bear with us always. How can we describe a IIlookII in words-we can only bear witness to it. We carry in our minds the wisdom imparted to us by those who cared; we carry in our hearts a pride that we have shared in a scene, the way of life at Limestone. In this, the Calciid 1965, we have tried to give you, the reader, a glimpse of those things that we here at the IIRockI, claim as IIour look? Much time and a special part of a per- son goes into portraying a iilookh. My deepest gratitude as editor of your yearbook goes to assistant editor, Charlotte Steinhardt, who has worked so closely with me. Thank you, Charlotte, for giving of your time and yourself. Mrs. Bickley, you have been the back- bone of our staff, always sharing of your time and imagin- ation. A yearbook is only as good as its photographer, and we think our photographer, Mr. Willis, has a little touch of genius tempered with wit. You came to our rescue at the last minute, Mr. Ginn, making us laugh through those final hectic hours before iideadlineh. And Mr. Cline, your advice and encouragement made us feel it was all worth- while. Special thanks too, goes to Vicky Brown, Helen Childress, Sandi Cheney, Stanley Eskridge and Patsy Johnsonetheir efforts are greatly appreciated. Finally, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to Pastor Leslie Frerking for giving me the inspiration to go on. The year ends. Some of us leave; all of us eventually must pass to a larger way of life. The Calciid gm to prws and the ttLimestone LookII is printed upon a page. As the poet has said, II. . . I have a destiny that I must keep and miles to go before I sleep . . .,I We say farewell to Limestone but not to IIour look? And so we leave; itlife . . . is a parting and a meeting. A tear and a smile? Becky Davis Editor, 1965 CALCIID
