C. has meant to us, we should be silent for there is too much to answer in a word, or on a printed page. For when, in September, the world was on the verge of a great spiritual decline, and there were loud cries of Modernism, Modernism, the W. M. C. students returned to the campus dazed, wondering what their part was to be in the combat of such conditions, and what W. M. C. could do to prepare them for that part. Now the year has ended and the fight goes on. But the spirit has changed and the doubts have vanished. Men and women are leaving W. M. C. prepared, prepared to meet any demands that may be placed upon them. When the cause of Christ shall triumph and the satanic forces are cast down in utter defeat, then W. M. C. shall have cause to be proud of the men and women that she has prepared and who have made this a better place in which to live. . r -Q, , Q.-A-221.0 V- . . L ff' . At different times she has served as instructor in voice and piano at the school. At all times she has shared its cares, sorrows, and ioys, and has watched over it as a mother over a child. Its griefs have been her griefs, and its successes, her successes. Though not physically able to attend many of the activities of the school, she has, nevertheless, become intimately acquainted with many of the faculty and students, and many a person has gone to her for solace or with requests for advice or spiritual help. Never has one gone who has not come away encouraged because of her under- standing and sympathy and the assurance of her prayers. Through the night, when others were asleep, she held those requests before God and interceded for individuals. Her life of service has been a con- tinual inspiration and challenge to all who have known her. It is with pleasure, therefore, that we didicate the 1950 Centralian to a true friend - MISS INA GAINES. leffalel fo 1 K L3 ma H . K 'I WV A as am, My L., M 1 'H mm.. Dark blots on the picture are seen in the way oi two World Wars, modernism, communism, crime, prevalence of divorce, and decay of morals. About face and we behold a mark of interroga- tion as to what the second half of the century holds in store. The answer to that question will be determined largely by the youth of today. Never before have we faced such possibilities and such responsibilities. It is only as the youth of our land have the light of Christian experience and training that they can arise to meet the situation. Central College stands ready to help them. DR. R. C. We invoke God's richest blessings upon them and direct the following quotation to them as a challenge to their future lives: If we work upon marble, it will perish, If we work upon brass, time will efface it, If we rear temples, they'll crumble into dust, But if we work upon immortal souls, if we imbue them with immortal principles, with the just fear of God and love of their fellow mem We engrave on those tablets something which will brighten all eternity. -Daniel Webster Theological Senior JACK SMITH These be our prayers - more sfrengfh, more light, more consfancy, more pro- gress. The goal and prize seemed far off at the time, but these players were determined to win the game. During these two years the contestants perhaps have met with difficulties that seemingly would bring defeat, but thtir Captain, Who has never known defeat, has brought them to a successful finish. Another aim is to encourage its mem- bers to participate in its regularly scheduled literary programs, in order that they might de- velop not only their talents but also a deeper appreciation for the great artists and their works. A contest sponsored each year by the Centralian Staff affords a wonderful opportunity for develop- ment in sportsmanship as the two societies com- pete with one another in the selling of ads and yearbooks. The contest this year was won by the Keenwanians. The winning of the Centralian contest for six consecutive years is indicative of the Philomathian Literary Society's ardent ambition to excel the ac- complishments of her sister society. She is noted for her ability to win and her graceful reactions as a loser. Her characteristics of prudence, love, and service are present in the lives of all her membersp and their lives in turn radiate with the results of her good works. The intellectual and spiritual contributions of the Philomathian Literary Society are many and far-reaching. X I' N E Our Pastor Central College is fortunate in having Rev. C. T. Byrant as pastor of the college church. His spiritual and practical messages have been a blessing to the students. Because he is vitally interested in the youth, he is an en- couragement to them. The spiritual instruction he has given has helped in preparing many young people for the future. We thank God for Rev. Bryant's life which is an inspiration to all. Fall Revival Our evangelist for the tall revival was Reverend S. D. Herron, president of the Ala- bama Conference. Reverend Herron's deep spirituality, great interest in young people and the searching messages which he brought were a blessing to us. Spring 'Revival Rev. and Mrs. Wm. A. Smith were here for a revival which helped everyone to get a clearer vision of what is meant by real Christianity. Service flrough fke minidfry I W. Y. P. S. The W. Y. P. S. is an organiza- tion of the young people at Central College who band together to pro- mote the cause of Christ. The meetings of the W. Y. P. S. consist of interesting programs which are cl blessing to the students. The College Conference College conference is made up of ci group of spiritual young peo- ple who donate their time in help- ing other people find Christ. The different groups hold services for the children in Headtown, visit the stockade, help the people in iail to find Christ, encourage the people in the old folk's home, and hold street meetings. Not only is Col- lege Conference a blessing to those not saved, but it affords experience for the workers. He is a good worker, loyal friend, and a ready helper. He has merited Who's Who. Perhaps the supreme responsibility of a Christian College is to help develop Christian character. The sacred trust of Houghton College is to stimulate intellectual, moral, and spiritual exercises to strengthen character. The pencil guide lines of immaturity disappear as the deep etch- ing of Christian personality carves out Christian character. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, a good understanding have they that do His commandments. Psa. 111:10 As in all art, beauty of character is obtained by Christian per- spective, balance, proportion, and technique.
