SOKOKIQ HOME FIRE PREVENTION You don t have to look far to find fire hazards Just take a thoughtful look around your own home' Start with the attic lf thls is a place where odds and ends are carelessly bundled away Look around the chlm ney What s going to happen in case of a hot chimney fire? How about piles of dusty and yellowed old news papers and magazlnes empty cardboard boxes and cartons discarded old clothes? Are there any heaps of old rags especially olly ones which could ignite through spontaneous combus t1on Old bottles left where the sun could strike them at a certam tragic angle have been known to supply that fatal spark which can cause a costly re How about the electrlcal equipment? Is the wiring of the house itself safe Are any of the circuits apt to become overloaded? Do you know the location and use of the fuse box Have you extra fuses and do you use them pro perly or do you try that criminally stupld trlck of substltutlng a penny? Look for frayed or damaged electrical cords and plugs That extension cord 1n the girls room may be in tlp top shape but how about the one ln the boys room or the one that takes quite a beating back of the kltchen table? Whlle we re on the subject of electrlcal appllances do you make careful use of tnem Electric irons carelessly left on the lronlng board whlle you carry on a prolonged telephone conversatlon can produce dlre results What about your heating system? Each method of heatmg has its own peculiar problems Is your kitchen woodbox safely located and do you take sufficient care in dlsposmg of ashes that may contain llve coals? Does your fireplace have a stable and large enough screen? Is your kerosene or fuel oil storage place really safe How about the chlmneys themselves? Is your oll heating system properly cleaned and serviced? Watch out for lampshades which may be very attractive but also very in flammable What will result from pro longed contact of shade and hot bulb? Tuesday Aprll 20 Our first visit today was to the Bureau of Printing and Engraving Then remember the walt ln front of the White House? Pictures taken ln front of the Capitol Building We especially enjoyed our vlslt with our own Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smlth Most of us ate lunch in the Senate Cafeteria and then went to the Franciscan Monastery Remember that familiar 813 Next came a VlS1t to the F B I Bulldmg and that evening the sport minded went to a baseball game and the rest to a movie at the Piccadilly Hotel about one oclock Every thlng last year s senlors told us about the Plccadllly elevators was right by the way' After lunch we saw the television show Stars on Parade Thursday April 22 Thls was the Hrst of our two extra days ln New York We put it to good use going to the Bronx Zoo and ln the evening to the Circus Friday April 23 Some of the early birds went to the Dave Garroway Show The rest of the day was filled with shopping a television show On Your Account the movle Knights of the Round Table and some wise souls went back to the hotel and rested up for another long bus rlde After supper some went to the Julius La Rosa show Then we all met at the hotel and finally bag and baggage set out for home Back in Biddeford Saturday noon and well always re member the trip Frances Phllpot Lena Sprague !
