MARY BIRNEY KIRK To you, Miss Mary B. Kirk, we proudly and wistfully dedicate our 1963 Spartan Echo. We say proudly because we have known you and recognized your worth. You grew up among us and were educated in our public schools. After college, you came back here to teach and to supervise art. To those of us who know you best, you are more than teacher, you are friend and helper. With your unusual insight into human nature, you have understood us and your frankness has helped us to really know ourselves. Yours is a keen intellect, a warm empathy, an ability to see big things in little things. Your own sensitive creativity has opened up new insights in our limited lives and we have gone away from your classes with an inspired sense of the real beauty and worth of life. You have helped many students on the road to fullest self-realization. We say wistfully because we regret your leaving our school. You have been our Rock of Inspiration. Our best wishes follow you as you start out on a new road. Wherever the road takes you, you will not be retiring, rather you will be renewing and reviewing. DEDICATION He saw his duty a dead sure thing, And he went for it there and then. In these two lines the character of a river boat pilot is described by the poet. Any attempt to delineate the character of Wil- liam Chambers would certainly, like the river pilot, include his sense of duty and his forthright approach to any problem. Mr. Chambers came to Lima, Ohio, from the Toledo schools in 1945 and was presented with the challenge of pulling together a vocational program that was falling apart at the seams. Then located in the Lima Tea Building, the vo- cational area was anything but congenial to a man who had enjoyed the superior facilities of the Toledo system. In a few short years he changed this program for one designed to keep disgruntled students busy, to one recognized throughout the state as an example of technical skill combined with academic excellence. When the bond issue for the senior high school was passed, Mr. Chambers was given the task of designing the area now known as the vocational school. The architects took his plans and incorp- orated them into the whole school plant without any changes. Bill is an all around good fellow. As a charter member of the Lima Public Schools Fishing Association, Incorporated, he has demonstrated season after season that he knows, how'to catch his share of fish. To this group, his retirement comes as a loss. He will, however, always hold an honorary membership in the group. W. W. CHAMBERS -5-
