Any student at Lima Senior High is eligible to try out, with the knowledge that only the top musicians will be selected. The 91 member Concert Band under the drection of Mr. Fred Mosier presented many fine perfromances this year. With concentrated effort on every- one's part the band participated in the Fall Festival soon after the beginning of the school year. This was followed closely by presentation of the Fall Concert. After many long hours of practice the Spring Concert was presented for all in- terested music students, parents, and members of the P.T.A. free of charge. As always, the highlight of our concert season was the High School Instrumental Invitational Concert held in April with Professor Roy J. Weger of Bowling Green State University as guest conductor. Eighteen instrumental ensembles were formed to participate in the District Music Contest in Lima. Eight of these eighteen ensembles received Superior ratings with five eligible to compete in Dayton at the State Contest. Three soloists also received Superior ratings. Officers this year were: Dave Kirlin, President, Andrea Beck, Vice President, Susan Rentz, Secretary, Joyce Hilgendorf, Treasurer, Kay First, Student Director, and Ladd Sellers, Librarian. --142-

The objective of the orchestra is to provide the student with a challenging, worthwhile, enjoyable experience. Our organization strives for the highest level in musical performance. It provides a fine background for a person who wants to make music a career or use music as a service to our student body. We started the year with a uniform campaign. Next we took part in the Fall Festival. At Christmas a select group of musicians along with the Senior Choir presented the well known opera Amahl and the Night Visitors for the elementary and junior high schools. After Christmas the whole orchestra worked very hard preparing for our Third Annual Pops Concert. This concert, being the biggest event of the year for the orchestra, was a huge success. All arrange- ments were handled by orchestra members under the chairmanship of our officers and the individual chairmen of the planning and presentation committees. Right after the Pops Concert string ensembles started working for the District Solo and Ensemble Contest and earned the right to go to the State Contest. With the end of the year drawing near we worked hard on our Invitational Concertn in which Mr. john Kendall of Muskingum College was our guest con- ductor. Every player gained useful knowledge from this enlightening experience. We concluded our musical activities for the year by playing for the com- mencement exercises. The Cadet Band is basically a learning group providing further experience in band Playing before entrance into Concert Band. Under the leadership of Mr. Fred Mosier the 48 member band performed in the Fall Festival, the Fall Concert, and the Spring Concert for all interested music students, parents, and P.T.A. members. The highlight of the year was the High School Instrumental Concert held in April with Professor Roy J. Weger of Bowl- ing Green State University as guest conductor. The Cadet Band has grown from a beginning fifteen member organizatinon. in 1960 to a group which will exceed seventy members next year. This year's band was by far the best group in the brief history of this organization. This year's officers were: Lonnie Collins, President, Jim Powell, Vice Presi- dent, Ellen Mumma, Secretary, Donna Frail, Treasurer, and jerry Lawson, Librar- ian. -145-
