THE SPARTAN ECHO STAFF Much time has been spent in assembling materials, collecting information, and in the preparation of this the 1959 Spartan Echo. At this time the Spartan Echo Staff expresses their appreciation to the teachers and students who so willingly helped with identification, the photography club for their pictures, and the distributive education classes for the work done on the advertising section. Interestingly enough we call this act of graduation a Commencement, thus indicating that it is not an ending but a beginning. It is the beginning of a new phase of life for which your parents and the professional staff at Lima Senior have done their best to prepare you. The Diploma which you will receive on June -l. 1959. is inscribed with words attesting to the fact that you have satisfactorily completed the program of studies prescribed by the Board of Education. and that you are declared a graduate of Lima Senior High School. Il high school of the first grade. The real significance of the diploma. however. rests with you. If you have done your best in terms of your potential. then it has real meaning. lt is thus the tran- script of credits that truly tells the story of your ac- complishments. and it will be this transcript that pros- pective employers and college registrars will eagerly scan for necessary information. Appropriate as graduation exercises are. and as de- serving of congratulations as you may be. there are even more important reasons for commencement. In the United States. commencement is a particularly meaningful cere- mony over and beyond its academic aspects. It shows the faith of a people in their way of life. It also shows the important niche that education holds in the whole Ameri- can scheme of things. Commencement. then, is not iust another rite. lt is an expression of a community's faith in its schools and its pride and joy in you. the product. May you wear the badge of the high school graduate with honor. I extend wholehearted congratulations to you and your families on your achievements. My very best wishes for success and happiness in the years to come. Sincerely yours. GORDON G. HUMBERT.
