C9545 QULQG Edited and Published by The Senior Class of Lima Central Catholic High School Foreword Symbolism is a powerful gift whereby we are able to traverse the distance in time between the past and present, to bring into reality ideas and ideals which have been bequeathed from generation to generation. Knighthood is symbolic of virtue and chivalry, of gallant youths on fiery-steeds roaming vast countrysides striving to uphold christian ideals, of men on pilgramages and crusades searching and maintaining moral excellence. What better guide could christian youth follow than the knightly virtue and chivalrous acts which in this day must influence their lives and way of thinking. Knighthood lives on in the spirit of youth, in the courage to uphold and defend their convictions, in the respect and courtesy to their parents and other superiors, in the loyalty to the virtues which give them a guide for their daily lives , and in the zeal and confidence with which they pray to their heavenly Father for the grace to persevere in their standards. Through the symbolism of our theme we have made two generations compatible. For it is our conviction that these virtues must dominate our lives. nf Wm J? ...Gr -P' fm mgil H 1 A E ,.,, JW f A HN 1 ., ff m, f ll , gi Q ,gm I fx' J HQ' 11 fa I 59 h -,. i' up Hsu, i'4L-I , , . .df ' A wa ff? : ag - is QQ, j,'f3.c' sv , M '5- ei if . . vm., K A9': --.. The once individual schools of Saint Rose and Saint Iohn are now consolidated in the interest of further- ing Catholic Education inthe Lima area. We, the Seniors, look to them for help in the formation of traditions and policies. We are very grateful for the time and sacrifice our pas- tors have made that we might enjoy the high- est Christian ideals possible for a Central Catholic High School. VERY REVEREND VINCENT KELLY C. SS. R REVERE ND WALTER HANLEY RIGHT REVEREND LEO F GRIFFIN x alma X 15.3, I I I x ' v IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU, IUSTICE, THAT OUR PROBLEMS AND DIFFICULTIES HAVE BEEN SOLVED. IT WAS BY YOUR IN- SPIRATION THAT OUR WISE AND PRUDENT ADVISORS GAVE US FAIR AND IUST CONSIDERATION. BECAUSE OP YOU, WE NEVER HESITATED TO SEEK COUNSEL Dedication To Gur Mothers and Fathers The thoughts have always been in our hearts, the words close to our lips. All that remained was the appropriate occasion for ex- pressing them. To you, our Moms and Dads, we owe a debt which in a lifetime will never be paid in full. You were our first teachers, explaining our childlike curiosities in a manner befitting our age. You lessened the burden on the stumbling path of adolescence and first began to shape the character of adults. You remembered the restless yearnings of youth and knew what was best. Today we are Seniors, tomorrow we will emerge the citizenry of a world filled with confusion and error. Thanks, Moms and Dads, for the securitywe feelin facing, with confidence, the everyday occur- rences in the world. Thanks, too, for the set of ideals which you have given us. And our thanks to You, Almighty God, for sending our Moms and Dads to us. Alma Mater Your walls are not covered with ivy, your stature is not of modern decor, yet one need only enter your interior to be drawn from the present to remembrances of school days. You hold the priceless memories of youth. In you, we again see the eager anticipation of wide-eyed and awkward fresh- men attempting to assume an air of self-assurance. We know the wonder and delight of actually belonging to part of a cheer- ing crowd in the icy thrill of a football game or the mounting suspense of a basketball tournament. We hear your name shouted to the heavens and resounding from the rafters of a gym, proving love and loyalty. Through you , we remember the edification of a silent retreat: the long evenings spent completing homework assignments: and the sighs of relief or groans of horror which accompanied grade cards . To us, who feel your warmth and guiding presence, you are notjust a brick building, a lifeless inanimate object. Rather, you have become a being, a force which is ever vital in our lives, for we realize the significant role you will play in our future. ll x , 1 X ' -. We could not enter. We had no key. The immaturity of youth had hindered us from commencing the long walk of life. In this, the last year of our formal education, we have come to the final stage in the development of our personality. For this we are genuinely indebted . You, who compose the faculty, have molded our adolescent mind and laid the foundation of adulthood. To you, above all others , we pay a tribute for sharing with us your vast and seemingly endless source of knowledge and learning. You have given your time, your patience, your kindness, and your understanding, that we might in our own way be the image of the Christian ideal. We shall never forget the memories centered around you, which have become a part of our life. It seems as though only yesterday we entered high school as Freshmen, eager and some- what bewildered. That year many of us experienced the thrill of our first formal dance or being a part of the cheering crowd at football and basketball games. The next fall as Sophomores we returned a little more dignified and feeling quite superior to the new Freshmen. As Iuniors we were elated at the thought of planning the prom for the Seniors. In September of 1956 we returned as the first senior class of Lima Central Catholic to complete the walk toward our goal of graduation. We saw many old friends and new faces and were very quickly in the swing with senior activities. Our first official senior activity was the Ring Ceremony. Soon after we planned and prepared for the Homecoming, followed by several dances sponsored by the senior class for the Senior Ball and the Senior Picnic . We have many pleasant mem- ories to recall now as we step onto the threshold of adulthood. Sophomores Having acquired a degree of self assurance during the pre- ceding year, the Sophomores return to give advice and example to those under them. Their range of interests vary with the season. They have given the students the simplicity of a pic- nic and square dance , and the sophistication of a formal dance . Cheerful cooperation has marked their eager participation in the many activities of the upperclassmen. Fully aware of their obligations and responsibilities in the building and up- holding of the spirit of Central Catholic, they have taken an active and valuable part in student life. Mission Club To provide a closer union in the Mystical Body of Christ is the aim of the Central Catholic Mis- sion Club. To achieve this goal, a certain day is set aside each week on which offerings of money are collected in all of the homerooms . These donations are given voluntarily and they certainly express the deep generosity of our students. The money will be used by the Holy Father for both the Home and the Foreign Missions of the world. Darrel Bryan, Brenda Sullivan and Carolyn Seitz actively participate in a mission rally. RETREAT MASTER All will remember the edification of the annual retreat. The conferences filled with inspiration: the periods when left to ourselves to meditate and reflect on the words of the retreat mas- ter. CENTRAL CATHOLIC, SHAWNEE TIE 13 - 13 In the first game the players from both teams showed a little rustiness in their run- ning of plays but not in their desire. The game was highlighted by hard , bruising tack- ling and blocking. Three plays after the opening kickoff, Bob Sarno exploded through a truck-sized hole in the right side of the line and scooted 82 yards for the opening score of the 1956 season. Shawnee took the ensuing kickoff on its own 10, and drove to the Cardinal 7 before losing the ball on downs in face of a stiffen- ing Central Catholic defense . Central , how- ever, fumbled the ball three plays later and Shawnee tallied, making the score 7 - 6. Toward the end of the first half, Central's Paul Schroeder scored on a short plunge through the midd1e,making the score 13 - 7. tra yard against Shawn e e. The game ended on Shawnee's ll yard line--too late for the Cards to score. CARDINALS TRIP BATH 27 - 7 IN TOUGH TILT Central reeled off some dazzling breakaway runs andafine 23 yard, O'Connor to Iim Bruin, pass against Bath's stubborn defense. Bath's offense was stopped bythe Card's for a minus yardage throughout most of the first half, except for a 60 yard touchdown sprint in the second period. Shawnee completing a pass on Central's four yard line despite the outstretched arm s of Centra1's Paul Schroeder. CENTRAL CATHOLIC BLASTS H-N 54 - 12 Performing before a delighted Homecoming crowd , the Cards unleashed four fleet-footed backs who completely overshadowed anything Hardin Northern could put up-- with one exception, Jerry Iolliff. The All-Conference fullback scored all of H-N's points. The entire Cardinal forward wall displayed crunching offensive and defensive strength as did the reserves. Before the start of the game, Charlene Eversole was crowned Homecoming Queen and, along with her attend- ants, reigned during the game. Iim Bruin snags a Central Catholic pass against i Bath Township and is tackled on the two yardline. l -s. w was CARDINALS CRUSH SMALL LEWISTOWN UNIT 46 - O The Cards showed a devastating ground attack which ate up a total of 317 yards anda total yardage of 412. DELPHOS SNAPE CENTRAL 'NIN STREAK Delphos, behind an awesome ground attack and a steel- like defense, shattered Central's hopes for an unbeaten sea- son. Central's vaunted offense was weakened by the loss of some key players, but it is doubtful that the Card's could have beaten Delphos with their spirit in the game seemingly lost. ROCKFORD BEATS CENTRAL 14 - 13, IN TITLE PLAYQFP Here it is! The title playoff the players had been waiting for all year. Rockford started out the scoring in the first period tallying on a 26yard run. The extra point try was good. Central Catholic came back in the second period scoring on a 18 yard run by Bob Sarno around right end. Both teams were held scoreless in the third period. Rockford scored in the fourth quarter making it 14 - 7. Then, with 45 seconds remaining in in the game, Central Catholic completed a screen pass to Paul Schroeder who took it in from the 24 yard line. The extra point try was partially blocked. The final score read Rockford 14, Central Catholic 13. Freshmen Varsity The Central Catholic varsity basketball team, under the guidance of C o a c h Robert Williams in his Pre shman year as coach, faced a rugged schedule which included two Cla s s AA teams . Although the record at the end of the season read 9 wins, 10 defeats, it is by no means the crite- rion by which to measure this team. A true yard- stick would be the one which could measure the amount of support which the team received at op- portune times . In s pot s during the season the team showed flashes of brilliance as does a rough gem when it is being cut. They displayed coordination and team work which every coach pleads for and de- sires. It wa s truly a successful season in that the players learned a lesson in sportmanship that will long be remembered. Standing at left: Mr. Robert Williams, Head Basketball Coach, talking things over with Rev. Cannen Nardecchia Lima Central Catholic athle- tic director. The Cards started the season winning the first games against Celina,Cridersville, and Sidney. The fourth game was against Miller City. The Wildcats defeated the Cards by the over- powering score of 64-40. In their fifth appearance, against Dayton Chaminade, the Cards showed improvement over the previous games. Wapak Blume became the Cards fourth vic- tory. And then came the classic of all classics--the Delphos St. Iohn game. Before an enthusiastic home crowd, the Cards managed to stay with the taller, more experienced Blue Iays and led going into the last period, 42-41. It was in the last three and an half minutes that the Delphos rally beat the Cards and wound up the scoring, 60-57 . In the Holiday Tournament , the Cards were beaten by Kalida , but managed to come out with a victory over Wapak St. Ioe in the loser's bracket. In an overtime period, Central clipped Ottawa Parochial by the score of 61 - 52. The Cardinals suffered two straight set- backs by Coldwater and Kalida. They lost to Coldwater because of a poor first-half, and to Ka- lida because of a poor second-half. By defeat- ing Piqua Catholic, the Cards pulled into second place in the Wayne Con- ference with a 3-l record behind St. Gerard's. The Cardinals lost their next game from the foul line, as usual, 49-42 to Fremont. Central then defeated a fine Minster team in a defensive bat- tle, which produced one of the few games in which the Cards did anything at the foul line. They tied Minster in foul shots made and came out ahead Wapak St. Ioe, coming around for the second time and having been the first team to beat St. Ger- nals in a fairly close game. Central played with all their hearts against St. Gerard's, but unfortunately, they played too hard. It was because of the Card's over-aggressiveness that St. Gerard's was able to come out ahead. Hitting on 40 out of 45 foul shot attempts, the Gerries beat Central, who had made l2 more field goals than St. Gerard's. In the last game of the season, the Cards appeared to be ready for the tournament grind, as they overpowered Waynes- field 77-54. Hitting on over 45 per cent of their shots, they picked up their ninth victory of the season as compared to nine defeats. In their first and final tournament game, the Cards stayed with Hicksville and led at the early stages, but were defeated in the second half. This game ended the season for the Central Catholic Cardinals. with the score of 49-47 . ard' s ,defeated the Cardi- n 5 ffifiiifm xx' 1, ' Ed Helmig Iunior Forward is, . Freshmen The Freshmen, eager to bear fame to Central and to impress their classmates, launched a very successful season by showing their ability to work together and their good sportsmanship. Their coach,Mel Williams, impressed his knowledge of the sport upon the boys, who welcomed any helpful advice enthusiastically. When tournament time arrived, the boys were quite confident in their ability. Their skill carried them to the finals and they finished the season second only to South, who won by four points. w Freshmen Cheerleaders, left to right Iean Pender, Ianice Scullin, Linda Williams, Kathy Quinn, and Alice Taylor.
