Varsity Debate FTER the close of the interclass debates, the ollicial debate year was underway when the following persons were chosen to represent Central: Edward Foster, Virginia Byrd, Paul Yant, Jeannette Jones, Miriam Butts, Wanda Slaybaugh, Bob Richards, Jim Wright, Marjorie Ripley, Robert Love, Bettye Tharp, Warren Jacobs, Jim Sweger. The state debate question was: Resolved, that the several states should adopt the unicameral system of legislature. A tournament was held at Fort Wayne on December l4, which was fol- lowed by a practice debate at Marysville on December 28. From this date our varsity debate was continued by three of the varsity speakers. They were Virginia Byrd, Edward Foster, and Jim Sweger. Row 4F-Howard Keller, Bill Parmenter, Connie Richardson, Don Ammon, Paula Bersee, Mr. Steiner. Interclass Debate NTERCLASS debate has been resumed after an interval of one year. The purpose of this type of debate is to interest a large number of prospective debaters and to give still others some knowledge of debate. The teams were coached by the following members of the faculty: Mr. Steiner-freshmen: Miss Howey-sophomores: Mr. Boylan-juniors: Mrs. Pence--seniors. There were two rounds of debate, the first round being held on October 28. The second round was held one week later on November 2. The Seniors emerged triumphant after all the votes were counted. Teachers served as judges for both rounds of debate. Top-Virginia Byrd, Mr. Boylan. Bottom-Edward Foster, James Sweger. State Debate Championship ESOLVED, that the several states should adopt the unicameral system of legislature, was the national debate question for 1937-1938. After winning the district championship in which Bluffton, Eort Recovery, and Troy participated, our team was ready for interdistrict competi- tion. This competition was provided by Lima South, and Fremont. Our team was victorious in each debate. Lima Central was now ready to claim statewide laurels. On March 10, Virginia Byrd and Edward Eoster defeated Maple Heights, a suburb of Cleveland. At Ohio State University on March 18, after winning the semi-finals from Salem High School debate team the day before, Virginia Byrd and Edward Eoster won the state debate championship from Kent. As a reward for all their brilliant orations they received a cup for winning the interdistrict contest plus another cup -for being the best debate team in the state of Ohio. Orchids to Virginia Byrd, Edward Poster, and Jim Sweger. Special recognition should be given to Mr. Boylan, head debate coach and Mrs. Pence, and Miss Howey, his very able assistants. -PAUL YANT eighty
