I suppose everyone, or nearly everyone who has been privileged to share the experiences and cooperation that has spirited our school has come away treasuring a memory comparable only to ''the mighty oak. We must remember that there is much in the business of our lives that we cannot hasten, for all the urgency of speed that today devils us. There is much— and this is true of the most important of our affairs— that cannot be concluded in a day, or a week, or a month, but must be let to take a guided course. J!. ii., « L •“ 'UNFINISHED BUSINESS’ All great people, when we come to think of it, living as nature lives— When an acorn fallen from an oak at last splits husk, sprouts, and begins to take root, how much unfinished business lies ahead of it! It has no contract with the sun and rain to have become an oak tree by a certain date. But with their help it will grow until it towers and spreads shade, in the good time we call God's. We ought as trustingly to let our plans and problems ripen to solution, knowing there is another Hand in the business beside our own. To leave a question to unfinished business is not to abandon the task. It is to attain the maturity and strength to carry on with it when the call to effort comes. In the observance of twenty-five years of service, MAYOR CHARLES WHEELER presents the Key to the City to COACH MINTNER at half-time during the game with the Hogan Rams. TO COACH MINTNER on his Twenty-Fifth Anniversary at Lillis Our dream for you is a sparkling athletic and convocation center with silver domes —attracting the best in the worlds of sport and culture. That kind of place-where people meet people doing all sorts of different things— a center of impact. In reality—our mighty oak has struggled to spell out our message, CONGRATULATIONS Thank you for conserving, protecting, restoring, preserving, rebuilding, reshaping, rationalizing, reordering, caring for, safeguarding, helping, educating and cherishing the FIGHTING IRISH SPIRIT. We appreciate the richness of time and patience, of hope and faith, that contributed to the growth of these silver years. We pledge our loyalty and serenity which will give us strength to carry on-while the silver turns to gold. Mrs. Margaret Hayes: Spanish, Business. Left: Sister Aniceta Shalz: Music, Band. Noon hour was an espe- cially busy time and the arrival of Channel 9 News made it even busier. Below: Lillis responds to Your Fair Share ; someone needs you to help him walk, talk, see, hear, get a new chance, kick a habit, save a marriage, build a future! Because of your fair share we have tried to do our part to fill these needs. This year's United Campaign, headed by Barb Dumortier, netted a total of $96.28. The money was collected in homerooms, and the height of the campaign was the Ugly Legs contest on November 3. Participants included Coach Mintner, who was the winner. Coach Hawkey, Mr. Amick and Coach Carson. A big thanks to all who took part in this worthy cause and gave their fair share. Stephanie Wright and Becky Clark were two of the many who tried to decide just whose legs were the ugli- est in our United Fund Ugly Legs con- test. The house of which he is director, with its motto Our mission is your future, maintains a full population of about 17 men and usually has a waiting list. Of the 67 men served in the first 11 months of 1972, 19 had returned to independent living, were still sober and gainfully employed, he was proud to report. Coach first came to Lillis in 1948 at the age of 22 after attending McKinley High School in St. Louis, serving in the Army Air Force and graduating from the University of Missouri at Warrensburg. After four years of coaching he was made head coach in 1952 (before any of us students vwre even around). As head football coach he has led the Mighty Irish to 153 wins, 62 losses, 9 ties, to Catholic League Championships in 1951, 1958, 1959, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966. Also in 1965, the Lillis Irish were voted the No. 1 team in Kansas City. During his many years of spirited coaching. Coach Mintner has also taught American History, Health, Industrial Arts, Drafting, Driver's Education, Physical Education, and, believe it or not, he once took over for a sick teacher and taught Advanced Biology. The year 1970, Coach's 23rd year at Lillis, was marked by his becoming Vice-Principal. Coach Mintner’s many years at Lillis are only surpassed by his extreme dedication. Thanks, Coach! 62 63 A surprised Coach Mintner received a cake honoring his 25 years at Lillis from L-Club president Tony Dickson and football captain Pat Collins at the first all-school pep rally, September 8. Members of the 1972 Fighting Irish team respond in various ways to the first pep rally. Was the joke on you, Tony? Or do some people always have their mouths open? 64 MEN AT PRACTICE: Buddha, Cornsticks, Squeeky etc. On September 30 the Hogan Rams defeated Lillis 7-6 and picked up their first victory over Lillis in 16 years. Hogan scored a touchdown in the second quarter while the Irish could manage only one field goal, a thirty yard one, kicked by Danny Salas. Another field goal was scored by Salas in the third quarter to end the scoring. St. Pius outscored the Irish 28-7 on October 6. After a scoreless first quarter, both Pius and Lillis scored one touchdown for a seven all halftime score. Pius ex- ploded for 14 third period points and added one more touchdown in the final stanza to provide the final margin. Lillis was defeated by St. Joe Shawnee on October 13, 44-20 though Mike Casey threw a pass to Jeff Petree and Brent Allen returned a punt which kept Lillis in the game during the first half, and tied the score 14-14. In the second half, the Blue Streaks exploded for 30 points while the Irish could manage only one touchdown, Mike Casey's keeper from the three yard line. Lillis squeaked by the Pern-Day Raiders 17-15 on October 20. At halftime, the score was 14-7 with Art Weaver and Tony Dixon running for one touchdown apiece. With approximately three minutes left, Danny Salas kicked a 30-yard field goal to provide the edge. October 26 was the date of the 1972 Homecoming football game at Lillis. The Irish met the Savannah Savages head-on and jumped to a 20-6 halftime lead on touchdowns by Art Weaver, Brent Allen, and Tony Dixon. In the second half, the Irish offense could produce no more points and the defense gave up 22 points. The final score showed 28 for Savannah, 20 for Lillis. Lillis went out to play the newly founded Hickman Mills Cougars on November 3, and the game ended in a losing cause for Lillis with the score of 28-20. Art Weaver made the first score from two yards out in the first quarter, and Dan Salas added the extra point. Hickman Mills came driving back and scored on their first possession but missed the extra point. Brent Allen finished out the scoring in the half when he received a 46-yard pass from Mike Casey. Dan Salas again made the extra point. The half-time score showed Lillis 14, Hickman Mills 6. The Cougars came out in the second half using a devastating ground attack and quickly tied the score. Lillis then took the ball, and Casey hit Brent Allen for another touchdown. Salas missed the extra point. From then on it was all Hickman Mills and their ground attack which scored two more touchdowns. Mike Casey's superb passing game kept Lillis in the game, but our defense couldn't hold the Hickman Mills ground game to a minimum. Final score: Hickman Mills 28, Lillis 20. 66 Irish Struggle Through Season On November 10, Lillis closed out its season by playing Grandview and capturing a tie. The score was 6 to 6 and the factor contributing to this (the low score) was the poor condition of the field. Due to the rainy week which preceded the game, the field was more suited for the life style of pigs. Lillis scored first on a blocked punt by Frank Hernandez which was picked up by Squeekie Weaver who ran it in. Dan Salas missed the extra point yet he was forced to kick it at a longer distance because of a delay of the game penalty. Grandview came back and scored in the fourth quarter and their kick for the extra point was wide to the right. Our defense is to be commended because it shut Grandview off time and time again when they were in scoring position. But the main thing I like about him is that he tries to get all the seniors into small colleges. The reason everybody on the football team likes Coach Mintner is—he is a cool dude. Art (Squeeky) Weaver One of the ways in which Coach Mintner has influenced my life is that his school spirit has been an example to me. I feel that if a man stays in one school for 25 years he's either got a lot of spirit or he’s a complete idiot. Talking to Coach tells me he's no complete idiot, and because of my football playing I have talked to Coach a lot about many of his ideas which I hope to follow. Once he said, When you're being beat, you don't quit. You come back strong. As an example, he used Lillis. Lillis is one of many Catholic Schools that are having financial problems, but instead of giving up and letting the school fall apart, Lillis put up a business building which shows we're not giving up. Charles Lantz Captains Join Coach Mintner I admire Coach Mintner most for his ability to persuade people. In his 25 years at Lillis, he has persuaded many people, and he has helped keep this school going because of this ability. He has gotten many donations for the school and his football teams. He has talked many people into going to school at Lillis. He has used his ability to get many young men in college, and he has started a job corps to help keep people off the streets and get them good paying jobs. This is why I admire Coach Mintner's ability to persuade. Mike Casey I feel that the main reason a person spends 25 years of his life at one school is pure dedication. I feel he must have the heart to help others and be willing to work for what he thinks is a worthy cause. I feel that much time is put into what Coach Mintner does, not what he has to do. He goes beyond that and does what he thinks is needed. Pat Collins 69 Above: Mr. John Schmiedeler, Diocesan Superintendent, honors Coach Mintner at halftime. Left top:. I want, by understanding myself, to understand others. I want to be all that I am capable of becoming... This all sounds very strenuous and serious. But now that I have wrestled with it for four long years. It's no longer so. I feel happy-deep down. All is well. And now, to leave a question to unfinished business is not to abandon the task. It is to attain the serenity which will give me spirit to grow to be a Mighty Oak . To treasure my friendships. To be loyal to my school— to the Fighting Irish. To keep the spirit. To spread the spirit far and wide in depth so great It will not diminish. 1 149 Bender's Tavern Foods and Drinks 1513 Westport Rd.
