Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1961 volume:

To you, Sister Fabiola, the Class of 1961 respectfully dedicates this edition of the Lillislog. Our principal and advisor during our high school years, you have furnished the steadying hand and understanding heart that have helped to keep our purpose that in all things God may be glorified. May our lives show our gratitude for all you have done for us. 2 His UotiMii P f) JoJutXWri His Holiness Pope John XXIII is pictured bestowing his blessing on the eve of his second anniversary as Holy Father. It is under his fatherly protection that the work of Lillis contributes its share to the work of the Universal Church. Bishop Johtv P. Codij His excellency John P. Cody, Bishop of Kansas City- St. Joseph, has often spoken to Lillis students, reminding them that in youth lie the hopes of the diocese and the Church. May the lives of the Graduates of 1961 reflect fidelity to the Christian principles taught at Lillis. May they ever be men and women of the Church--Christians faithful to their trust. 3 QlstPM But there are also some who desire knowledge, that they may build up the souls of others with it, and that is charity . Kieran Mclnerney, O. S. B., is ready to retire to his quiet room after a long strenuous day of teaching Father Kieran does an exemplary job as Spiritual and Athletic Director. Father Roger Miller and Father James Nugent, C. S. S. R. make many sacrifices so that they can teach religion to the students of Lillis. Father Nugent is new to the faculty staff and students but Father Miller is well ac quainted with them after several years of teaching here. | Father Kieran blesses the congregation during Mass. He is in the Lillis chapel on second floor. 4 By being irreproach- able in all respects, the Lillis lay faculty has al- ways given only the best examples for the students to follow. This year is no exception. Lillis again has a most competent and cap- able lay faculty on the teaching staff. Seated in her office, Miss Dorothy Kennedy lines up assignments for her Social Science and English classes. Mr. Eugene Propp starts home after a long hard day with his fresh- man homeroom and science and math classes. Mrs. Robert Green looks satisfied as she glances over the grades of her freshman and sophomore girls' gym classes. FoievJttu Coach Joseph Mintner, who has been on the Lillis lay faculty longer than any- one else, writes out detention slips for tardy students while Coach Jerry Letourneau sets up a defensive play for his basketball team. Besides coaching the varsity foot- ball team, Coach Mintner teaches drafting, shop, and physical education. Coach Letourneau teaches American History and physical education. 6 CfWtfewft Fo Coflty Page 5 Ce uM6 Page ! 6 UiA leA JlatehiPjv Page 33 CWes Page 47 Actuates Page 65 Page 75 With the coming of 1961, Lillis High School completes its twentieth year. To us students, this has been a lifetime, and the Lillis cornerstone with its 1941 inscription may seem part of a distant past. Yet this anniversary bears witness to the successful ( planning directed not only toward the educational needs of students then attending school, but also to the demands of later times. And each student- and then- has found it possible for his life to be enriched through the warm family relationship that has become a Lillis tradition. w Providing an atmosphere of mutual love and respect, this tradition of Chris- tianity in action has helped us to find and build a confidence in a loving God. It is in the U assurance that our world rests securely in His protecting Hands that we find the courage to challenge the future. We, the Fighting Irish ' of 1961, are grateful for the opportunities provided us by our very special instructors to strengthen our faith and in ourselves and in our American way of life, and to develop this abiding trust in God's Providence. As we seniors leave, we know we shall often have occasion to remember Lillis and all that it has come to mean to us. The 1961 Lillislog is our attempt to share some of thes highlights with you. For the staff, this endeavor has been a rich and rewarding ex- perience . U.I ,0 G. A.D. 1.9 41 7 Good training for future responsibilities is provided by membership in the Lillis Student Council. All student acti- vities are planned and inaugurated by this group under the direct supervision of Sister Fabiola. Father Kieran presents the gavefto Student Council President, Mike Fahey, and gives his blessing for a success- ful tenure. Ohu ltod BELOW we see Mike in his role as President. Such rapt attention would do justice to any skilled parlimen- tarian. Is it always like this, Mike? Cheese, smiles Cathy Combs into the camera as, FROM LEFT, Judy Negus, Ricardo Lopez, Jim Azar, Dan Mosley and Bob Van Bruwaene wait for the school photographer to capture their likeness for posterity. UMi Ab Uo Lillis teachers welcome the opportunity to meet parents of Lillis students at the annual faculty tea. Miss Kennedy is hostess to Mrs. Raymond Bernal and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Page. During the presidential campaign two of John F. Kennedy's most enthusiastic backers were Margaret Pipes and Vivian Callahan. KENNEDY PRESIDENT Mr. Stitz (LEFT) and Mr. Cook are two of the many Lillis dads who volunteer their ser- vices for such activities as taking tickets at football and basketball games. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? gasps Don Dee. No, it's Superman answers Mike Fahey, taking off. Think I'll join him! Jim Audley (background) can't seem to get off the ground. A l Aw y Split-second expectancy before action resumes. This particular game was a height contest between the tall Varsity players (in white) and the shorter players (in green). The entire school attended this unusual contest of Lillis vs. Lillis as a pre-Christmas treat. QodcJhtij Re-enacting the Annunciation for the Living Rosary, Mary Pat Barden portrays the Angel Gabriel and Shirley Mueller, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Preparing for the induction of Sodality candidates, Shirley Mueller, Prefect, arranges flowers on the altar in preparation for the coming induction of Sodality candidates. Janice Curls, Secretary; Janet Maher, Treasurer; and Judy Theis, Vice- President; are supervisors. During the second week of Advent, the juniors have the privilege of lighting two candles on the wreath. Mary Ann Schoen, Prefect, is lighting the candle. The other officers of the junior Sodality, Barbara Hamilton and Nancy Ronan, in the center, join in the singing of the Avent hymn. The candidates go to Father Kieran, Director of the Sodality, to be received as permanent members of the Sodality. Climaxing May devotions, Prefect Shirley Mueller crowns Mary Queen of Heaven and Earth. Towards the end of fall the Senior Class Officers are prepared for the activities that fill the air. Pep Club response at the victory assembly was as enthusiastic as their team support at the State tournament, pictured across the page. Freshmen impersonating the Lillis varsity traveled through the regional tournament and arrived in Columbia in time to hear sports commentator John Gorman. Emcee Bill Bauer supervised from the stage, and Mike Rider, Tom Ventola, and Jim Prevost were key men in an all-male skit. i The Rev. Emmett Summers, diocesan athletic director; the Rev. Kieran Mclnerney, O. S. B. , Lillis athletic director; the Rev. James Nugent, C.S.S.R. , the Rev. Miller, and Coach Joseph Mintner are an attentive audience. Father Summers makes the formal presentation of the Catholic League varsity trophy carried on stage by Dave Sanford. Jim Audley waits to place the trophy in its place of honor. This four-page supplement is included in the Lillis log by special arrangement with The American Yearbook Company and its representative, Mr. Tom Glennon, former Lillis coach who also took an Irish team to State. The Lillis Band contributed a colorful and tuneful part to the celebration. ■ A'V COME R MARCHING -1N Alicia Aguilar 2829 Madison Lo. 1-2430 Mike Lewis 3119 Broadway Lo. 1-4139 Joe Amone 115 N.
