Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1956 volume:

Published by the Senior Class of LILLIS HIGH SCHOOL Kansas City, Missouri Volume XII 1956 This LILLISLOG is a record of Lillis TIMES during the 1955-1956 school year. It tries to recapture for you a few of the past year's minutes -- fleeting and fun -- filled, as well as some of its more serious, (and perhaps more slow-paced) hours. With a touch of nostalgia, this volume reminds you of moments, days, and hours when you would have liked to hold the hands of the clock back to keep a happy time longer.......and of some times when you would gladly have pushed those same hands forward if you could have done so. In keeping with a theme of Time and Times at Lillis, these pages are dedicated to the Past -- the Present -- and the Future of Lillis High School: To the Past. . . with its joys, its mem- ories, its achievements; To the Present. . .with its work and play, its privileges and responsibilities; To the Future. . .with its unmeasured store of faith and hope and love. May Lillisites of the past, the present and the future step from the codfines of Time into the timelessness of an Eternity with Him Who was--before all time. REV. VICTORS IN THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPETITION OF THE LILLIS YEAR---- THE RELIGION CONTEST ULUSTRATOR STAFF MEMBERS: M.J. Monahan, Peggy Gallagher, Jim Fitzgerald, P. Hellinger. LILUSLOG STAFF HEADS: M.E. Ryan. Co-Editor; Jim Denning, Editor-In-Chief. LILUSLOG OFFICERS (STANDING) B. Nixon, Georgia LaSala, P. Arensberg, H. Thorpe, P, McGuire, Jim O’Sullivan. LILUSTRATOR STAFF MEMBERS: M. Howard, L. Heegn, F. Henke, L. French ULUSLOG STAFF from English l h_ Period Class PRINTSHOP As soon as Jim Farrar has that ink mixed, these members of one of the printing classes will be even busier than they seem now. Get- ting the presses ready to roll are: LEFT TO RIGHT: Jack Lockwood. Ed Vogel, Jim Gilbert, Richard Williams, and Carl Childers. All the printing classes are taught by Sister Loretta, O.S.B. Industrial Arts Classes DRAFTING Serious-faced young men at the tall specially-built drafting desks seem to have problems to solve. Coach Mintner, drafting instructor, helps Ralph Behrens out of a dilemma. Jerry O'Malley who is busy at table no. 3, is also an expert in the printshop. Bob Crass is at table no. 13; Bill Barry studies his problem; Mike Lonegan is lost in deep con- centration; Byron Fundis seems to know all about it; and Pat Hellings vigorously uses his eraser. SHOP If there was anyone in the shop class without a job the day this picture was taken, we fail to see him, unless Elbert McAl- aster and John Barelli (there in center) are not just resting. Others identifiable around the shop from LEFT TO RIGHT ARE: Ed Tallman, Bob Behrens, Coach Mintner, Ivan Stoerman, Ronnie O’Dell, Frank Warfield and Harold Wenninghof. Seniors in the physics class are finding the resultant of forces. Byron Fundis trying out the geiger counter which he helped to contruct. Experimenting with solutions in chemistry. Maurice Shaw and Kathleen Lyndon study the heart, in biology. Miss Karl (in figured blouse), foods class instruct or, looks doubtful about the culinary achieve- ments of her underclassmen. Shirley McMahon, (wielding the mixing spoon) seems to have her own doubts about results, too. Twelve more minutes and this faithful band will be off duty and back in class. They are the cafeteria helpers who are on duty each day through three lunch periods. Around the table are: Katherine Dii Bon, Kathleen Ryan, Pat Dii Bon, Ann Lynch, Carol Zeller, Diane Harvey, Catherine Jaeger, Patrick Jaeger, and Steve Giarruputo. A brand-new electric range in the foods depart- ment for a brand-new group of freshmen. Mary O’Neill, Joanne Moser, Yvonne Cipolla and Mary Kay Foley find that the range has a gadget for absolutely everything, excepting that it doesn't go out and do the shopping -it only cooks the groceries that you have on hand. No! No! Don’t look at those keys! PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE COMMERCIAL CLASSES LOOK FORWARD The $64 bookkeeping question: Every- body’s books in balance? Oh my! ILWSOTffl j off MAY TIME'S UP 1956 MON TUE WED THU FRI Yes, time's up. Minutes ran into hours--weeks grew into months ---time piles up and spilled over, --four full-to-overflowing years. Now, its' all over--all past--except for the memories. The memories? Well, we can't just flip a calendar--and then for- get. --Now can we?----And we don't want to close a door--forever--- without looking back. How could we?----Always we'll be hearing the clamor of those bells--invariably they caught us between somewhere and somewhere, or in the middle of a dream.--Every stair we climb in future will say remember when -----of endless single files-and to-your-right pro- cessions at every hour's end.--Wherever chattering voices mingle with the clink of china-we'll be back in cafeteria again.-Sometimes when hectic, hurried folk create a traffic-jam in downtown stores- twill only take the slamming of a metal door or two-and presto! it will be locker time again-in memory. Tomorrow-----there'll be other games and other dances--but they won't ever be like yesterday's again.-Wherever bands may play---- or thousands cheer---we'll always think we see a streak of green and white go by. Memories-----too many for this page--a heart full! Uniforms-- detention slips-report cards and exams.----Play practice and operetta times--pep rallies and home games.----Homework and contests---study hour too short or else too long-the trophy cases crowded full--a little space for Peace on second floor where Christ lived beneath the Lillis roof-May crowning---and the Rosary over the P. They spell LILLIS in the language of the class of '56. We went a long time looking forward---to now. And now---somehow the thrill is all mixed up with something else-something that feels strangely like a lump in someone's throat-and looks a little like a tear!
