Text from Pages 1 - 106 of the 1950 volume:

Published by The Seniors of Lillis High School Kansas City, Missouri Volume VII May, 1950 yfitk f ar- 1 w W— rrn 'Dedication No other pontifical leader of recent times has displayed the spirit of self-sacrifice; no other Vicar has been so close to the hearts of his people as Pius XII. While war threatened, he devoted all his efforts to warding off the disaster. While conflict raged, he labored to ease its pains and consequences. When hostilities finally ceased, he began a never-ending quest for lasting peace. In this Holy Year of Jubilee he has but one self-abnegating desire: that the people of the world may by prayer and penance reform their lives and acquire Christian virtue. With prayerful and fervent desire that this Jubilee will prepare a general and universal return to Christ, do we dedicate this seventh edition of the LILLISLOG to Our Holy Father. 3 Most Reverend Edwin V. O'Hara Bishop of Kansas City, Missouri Eleven years filled with joyful, zealous labors for His Church have passed since His Excellency, the Most Reverend Edwin V. O'Hara, became Bishop of Kansas City. One of Bishop O'Hara s greatest achievements has been his generous contribution to and keen interest in the growth and development of the diocesan educational system. But Lillis High School is more than just a ''project on which Bishop O'Hara has worked. After only 7 commencement exercises, its graduates living and working in the world of today are the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream. These graduates, as Lillis students, felt often in many ways the bishop's close personal interest in them and their school. They saw him at their pep rallies, in their halls and classrooms and cafeteria, at their programs and assemblies. They cherished his pastoral care and advice, his solicitude for their progress and well-being. In the name of all Lillis alumni and students, the Class of 1950 wishes to pay tribute to His Excellency, Bishop O'Hara, and to extend to him their prayers and best wishes that his joy may be full in this Holy Year of 1950. 5 “PcL t ftA 6 Very Reverend Monslqnor H. While the world rises from the ashes and debris of a global warfare and rumors of another con- flict circulate, the Church, oppressed as she would seem, takes time to celebrate her joy in God - the Jubilee Year. JOY then, is the chosen keynote, the theme, the spirit of the class of '50. Graduates of this year have many reasons for gladness and satisfaction. Ours is the JOY that springs from true Christian religion—from a Catholic education. And yet, in such times of contentment, shades of sorrow creep in—sorrow that our carefree days, days of joy at Lillis are gone forever. Some consolation is to be had in the memories that the pages of this book will bring to all students of the year 1950—memories of JOY in friendly Combat, JOY in Social Activities, JOY in Study, JOY in Comradeship - - - 12 RALPH ANDRADE Holy Nam 1,1.3 Track 4 Plans: Farming JOSEPH ARENSBERG Buddy Student Council 3,4 Holy Nam 1,2,3 Horn «room Loader 3 Co.-Leader 4 Operetta 2,3.4 L Club 3,4 (President 4) Popularity Contest 4 Football 1.2.3,4 Basketball 2 Track 3 Amateur Hour 2.3 8t. Tony Burasco. John Seiber, Bill Gormly. and Barbara Stahl. Presidents of the various clubs and societies and homeroom leaders comprise the Student Council of Lillis. Members of the Council are elected by popular vote at the beginning of each year and represent the student body. Just as the Student Council is the representative unit the homeroom is the social unit. Every day, Larry and Lou Lillis report to one particular room, termed a homeroom. The students of this room get to know each other better than any student they meet in class, for it is through the home- room that all activities are executed. It is in the homeroom that enterprises for the Carnival are ener- getically planned, it is here that Amateur Hour skits are painstakingly worked out; it is in the home- room that all the good times are had—to be remembered in later years. The members of a homeroom work together as a unit, as a team, much like the homeroom's own intra-mural teams. Through this unity of spirit, homerooms become known simply as ''203 or 306 . Homerooms vie with one another for contest prizes, and it is considered essential for each student to make his a good homeroom, one whose members have the vitality and warmth necessary to be good students and friends. 30 H'a PdU Top Row: A1 Holder, Homeroom Loader: Dolores Laughlin. After losing Arensberg through injury, Lillis still showed their spirit in League Competition by trouncing the • Hogan Rams 19 to 0, and then, although rated a 4 touchdown underdog, and outweighed 20 pounds to the man, they fought their traditional rivals, the Rockhurst Hawklets, to a 19 to 19 tie. The starting line up of this 1949 grid team included Heider and FitzGerald as ends; Shepherd and JoRay Tackles; Singleton, Mendoza, Smith, and Lonegan alternat- ing at the guard and Stephenson at the Center post. The backs were Connelly at quarter, Yurchak, Arens- berg, and Cunningham at the Halves, and Schleicher at the fullback slot. Although they won games the teams spirit hustle, and courage recalled the words of Coach Mmter when the season opened. Asked what he thought of the Lillis grid chances he replied They'll know we're in there. TOM FIT? Th© on© responsible for keeping Lillis ahead in Kansas City high school athletics is Coach Tom Glennon. Since coming to Lillis in 1947, Coach has established an enviable record for his teams. His boys are known for the fighting spirit’' he instills in them. In basketball his exploits include a sophomore championship, two B Team titles and one Varsity Crown in three years of coaching. In 1949 the baseball team also won the championship by de- feating Glennon 2 out of 3 games. A FINE RECORD for a FINE COACH! First Row—L to R. Frank Yurchak, Tom Jo Ray. A1 Holder. Buddy Aronsborg. Competing against the junior teams of the other Catholic High Schools of the city, this combination sophomore- freshman group was outstanding and dis- played the potentiality of becoming a first- rate varsity eleven. When the team brought home the C Team Championship, it was the sixth time in seven years that Irish gridsters have set a 1st place freshman-sophomore award on the heavily laden Lillis trophy shelves. The team had plenty of spirit and hustle but not enough height. When Bill Stephenson was ineligible after the first semester, it left the starters of the squad without a man above the 6 foot mark. The Catholic League Crown eluded the grasp of the Irish this year as they lost two games to Rockhurst and one to Hogan. The League's history. The two teams fought for the full thirty-two minutes before the Hawks could eek out a 10 to 9 decision. The seven wins and three losses gave the Irish a second in League competition. They were edged out in their first start against the Cadets, but came back to rout them in their second engagement. The team also participated in several tourna- ments in which they were fairly successful. Their scoring prowess is shown by the fact that they averaged nearly forty points per game during loop play. Steve Hayde and Roger Fister were the leading point makers over the season, while John Can- non distinguished himself on defense. The living rosary, above, is the traditional tribute of the Sodality members to their Queen and Model. Although active members of these two groups benefit most from them, all Lillisites are enriched by them; after personal sanctification, both the Lay Apostle and the Sodalist seek the happiness and welfare of their neighbors through intelligent and meaningful Catholic Action. Sodality officer are Louise Sullivan. Martha Hlmmel- berq. Sheila Gallagher, and Barbara Garnler. rffrtetolctfe First How loft to right: Mary Pat Richardson, Louise Sullivan. Martha Lynch. Pat Hix.
