Most of the work toward the publication of FOOTPRINTS is done after school, on week-ends, or during study hall; but ideas may hit at any time — during an English test, while watching tele- vision, or in the middle of a sleepless night. Reminiscences of a special year that can never be re- peated — studying and playing, ballgames and track meets, parties and proms — all are included between the covers of this very memorable book. This has meant frustration at times and satisfaction at times but without the en- durance and sacrifice of each member of the staff, FOOT- PRINTS ’71 could not have become a reality. Two kinds of unity must exist. In the year ’71, we unite as classes, each with its in- dividualistic characteristics. Seniors look ahead to the world beyond, Juniors look to that Senior year. Sopho- mores look to the broadening of their horizons. MASCOTS: Les Bethune and Pam Barbour 34 “Meeting the Challenge, We Go On” FOR ALL SENIORS OF 1971 Upon taking an inventory of our minds, sometimes we think about past generations and their achievements. It is easy to remember great feats. Too often, though, the human aspect is forgotten. This leads me to wonder what future generations will think of this one — my generation. Will they say we advanced in technology or in human understanding? | deeply hope they answer ‘‘Both.” You and | have a grave influence on their answer. When we have gone our separate ways, we will think of this and other days. But we should do so only for two reasons. First, to use the past as a “reference book” for planning tomorrow. Second, to cheer our hearts in more melancholy moments. On most adventures which we embark, there is usually a ‘“‘point of no return” Graduation is one such point. With this in mind, let us now go out into the world seeking another adventure, the further improvement of ourselves. R. Varsity and Jr. Varsity activities are on the program throughout the year. Our program is one of the finest for it rouses not only a spirit of competitiveness but also of pride and enthusiasm. The night of October 9, 1970 was one full of memories. Each Senior football player chose a girl to escort. Also two additional Senior girls were elected to the court by the Senior class. Miss Gloria McNeill received the majority of ws GLORIA McNEILL Reigning Homecoming Queen Lillington High School votes to have the honor of HOMECOMING QUEEN, 1970- 1971. THE CAVALIER WALK We’re behind the CAVALIERS 84 Source of School Spirit The unknown is the greatest barrier to progress, Fear to try something new and un- tested has prevented many a coach from real- izing a winning season and many a pep club from “total school spirit.” During the past summer, all the cheerleaders attended the Golden Eagle Cheerleading Camp at Mere- dith College in Raleigh. They tried to conquer the “unknown” by trying some different things. They learned new techniques of cheering, pep yells, and pep rally ideas. They brought praise and a glory to LHS by winning two Outstand- ing Performance Ribbons, one Honorable Men- tion Ribbon, and the Golden Eagle Spirit Stick. The cheerleaders, acting as ‘‘people pepper uppers”, work to keep everyone’s spirits high. With the help of the students, the cheerleaders express enthusiasm, along with support at each game. It was made of the finest young men that LHS could offer. Each was very personable, courageous, and showed important traits of manhood that their parents, school, and life could teach. They gave their minds, body and spirit to the season and showed each of us that they were a million dollar team. They kept with the tradition of the Green and Gold Varsity in that they always represented their families, school, community, and fellow students in the ultimate manner. We all are proud of them and their accomplishments. We hope that they in their sacrifice, hard work. and cour- age, have set an example of tradition for the young Cavaliers to follow and imitate. Appliances Teor Looking Back... . . . | wonder how we made it. There always seemed to be too little time, too few pictures, too much noise, and too much confusion. But every time the confusion cleared, everything materialized, and we succeeded. Hectic does not describe dead- lines adequately. | would like to express my appreciation to some of those who have made this publication possible. Mr. Ed Goldston was there with the answer to our problems. Mr. Eaker let us have the time during school we so desperately needed. John, Joe, and Dr. Williford spent numerous hours to have pictures ready. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sexton graciously allowed us to use their lovely home for pictures. From my own corner, special thank-yous go to each member of the FOOTPRINTS’ staff for taking care of their sections and seeing that the job was well done. Debbie Taylor, Assistant Editor; Fred Hobbs, Business Manager; and Mary Jo Byrd, Assistant Business Manager, with their never-ending support and resourcefulness, have been valuable co-workers. Last, but not least, | wish to express my appreciation to our patient and helpful advisor, Mrs. Helen Stewart, and to ALL my friends who helped to make the publication of the 1971 FOOT- PRINTS possible.
