LILLINGTON SCHOOL HISTORY Since Harnett County is this year celebrating its Centennial, the Annual Staff thought that the students would be more interested in a brief history of its school than in the history of the Senior class. The first school established in what is now the Lillington District was Cumberland Academy located near the Summerville Presbyterian Church The Academy was organized in 1845 as a highschool and was con ve rted into an academy The children from Lillington walked to school along a small footpath This school served the area until 1870 when the first school was es tablished in Lillington Ab out this time seven men of the Lillington Baptist Church built a small frame school house where the Misses Laura and I.. uc r e tia Parker nowlive and hired Mr D a n i el Mclntyre and his wife to teach In 1876 Reverend William Brunt was hired to teach in the schoolan d was paid S800 peryear ln 1890 th 15 building was sold for a dwelling From 1890 1903the child ren from Lillington attended a school about 1 Z miles from Lillington on the Fort Bragg Road T h1 s school was called Turkey Breast or Turkle Breast ln l903a three room wood en building was erected in the south ern part of town where now stand the three Layton houses on 8th Street In 1914 the first brick building was erected This building is now the primary bu 11d 1 n g of the Lillington School The first commencement ex ercises for the new school were held under a tent, since the building was inc omplete .rpg N Ji!!! 'win Dias. Aa A Farm-Life Department was addedthrough the efforts of Reverend F r ank Ha r e , and two dormitories were built, one for boys and one for girls, for boarding students. The school received funds from the state and federal government to pay the salaries of the teachers of agricul- ture and home economics The present high school building was erected 1n 1926 and the elemen tary wing was added in 1951 following the passage of the General Assem bly's Act of 1907, creating a law for the establishment and maintenance of public high schools in each county The schools were supported by local taxation For many years the athletic pro gram was carried on in an old Wooden and tin gymnasium This was finally torn down and a modern gym erected in 1948 Graduates of Bunnlevel Elementary School attend Lillington School From the first Z5 per cent to 50 per cent of the graduates ofthe Lillington S c h o o 1 s ha v e attended college o institutions of higher learning Members ofthe Lillington School Board at the present time are D A W Peede Chairman Archie Taylor Secretary GradyC Matthews A J White and G6 rald F Hobbs Enrolled this term 577 elementa ry and 248 high school students with a total of 29 teachers Each year Lillington Schools turn out students who take further tram ing to b e c om e doctors ministers m1 s s 1 ona r ie s teachers nurses dentists newspaper editors lawyers and politicians 51 'Q N: 5114 n fn...
