IIIASS HISHIRY ln 1948 our class started forth into the forest of learning. It was a very deep, dark, and thick forest and our job was to clear a way through it with our ability to learn. We were divided into three groups, thinking that this might enable us to get a better start. President of the group under Miss Home Ec Enzor was Billie Jean Adams. She came to us from Bunnlevel and we soon learned that she was a top ranking student. President of the group directed by Mrs. English Walker was Billy Joe Johnson. Billy Joe was also an outstanding, good, all 'round athlete. The group led by Mr. Agriculture Blackmon had for their President, Hill Murchison. This year proved to be a good one. As we looked behind us and saw how much of the forest had been cleared away we realized that one of our toughest jobs was done, that is, the job of beginning. The next year the three groups were combined into one group of about forty-five mem- bers. We knew that as we went deeper into the forest, where the trees were bigger and the branches stronger, that we would need to work together. Miss English Hockaday was our leader and Billie Jean was our President. We sold drinks at field day and pennants and emblems at school in order to raise money that we would need our Junior year. We were proud that so many members of our class were outstanding in athletics. Louise, Delilah, Christine, Dorothy, and Ann played basketball. The boys who played basketball or baseball were Billy Joe, Rudolph, and -T06 P. Joe P. was also a cheerleader. Frances Louise Atkins won an award for making the most improvement in music. Delores Strick- land and Patsy Blalock left us our sophomore year in order to take up the job ofhome- making. By now we really felt as though we were getting into the swing of things, so we held onto our tools and continued to go even deeper into the forest. There were forty students in our Junior class. Miss English I-lockaday was again our leader and Laura Mae Edwards was our President. We gave a play, Seventeen Is Terri- fic , and sold magazines and Christmas cards to raise money for the Junior-Senior Ban- quet. During the year we gained some new members and we re more than happy to welcome them to our troop. They were Gaynelle Lanier, Faydine Cooke, and Muriel Bain. Frances Louise left us in order to attend St. Mary's school. We had a football team this year and they won the Harnett and Johnson county championship trophy. Of course, we were proud that Joe P. , Hill, Rudolph, and Billy Joe were on the team. Shirley Cameron was chief cheerleader. We elected Duane McDonald and Faye Allan as our mascots. We chose the pink carnation as our class flower and for our motto we selected, The End Crowns The Work . For our banquet we gave the seniors a gay Mexican fiesta. We took part in grad- uation at the end of the year. Our marshals were Billie Jean--chief, Sara Nell, Delilah, Billy Joe, and Joe P. We were very proud to see our President, Laura Mae, accept the golden key to Seniority on the big night. There were thirty students in our Senior class. Although we had decreased in number we knew that we could finish the job of clearing a way through the Forest of Knowledge. Practically all of us had by now really been out on a limb , but had managed somehow to keep up with the class. Miss English Hockaday was still with us and our class officers were: Laura Mae Edwards, Presidentg Dorothy McDonald, Vice-president, Mary Jane Charnbers, Secretary, and Joe P. Smith, Treasurer. Gaynelle and Billy Joe branched off into other schools and Sara Nell took up homemaking. Peggy Cash and Margaret Gilchrist were cheerleaders. We gave our senior play after Christmas and of course after that we we re busy with class night and graduation. As we finished our senior year and saw back of us a clear way instead of forest we truly realized the meaning of, The End Crowns The Work . During all four years of our high school education we have been guided and helped by wonderful leaders. We, the Senior class of '52,would like to express our thanks to Mr. Principal Hamilton and also to each of the other teachers who have been so generous with their time and helpfulness.
