BOOKMILLER Associate Superintendent From the earliest elementary grades through the final high school years, the students' education is guided by our capable, hard-working adminis- trators. In the early grades, the major goals are to instill curiosity into in- quiring young minds and establish the principles of good citizenship. The junior high years are a time of exploration into new problems and new subjects, when a whole new world of knowledge is opened. In the senior high, the maturing students are encouraged to take pride in their school, in their accomplishments, and in themselves, as maturing young men and women. Throughout this educa- tional span, the students benefit fromthe understanding and wealth of experience of the administrators. The school board as a policy-making organization is also a vital part of our school system, acting in the interest of the general public. The board establishes the fiscal and edu- cational basis on which the schools of our district operate, and functions to promote the social and intellectual growth of our students. I was quite surprised whenlfound Amer- icans driving on the wrong side of the road. This was V1adi's first impression of Amery ica w h e n h e arrived from Mount Maungunai, New Zealand. Vladi adapted very well to the American way of life. American schools appeal to him because students aren't required to wear uniforms and there is no corporal punishment. But Vladi does suggest unsupervised study halls for seniors, as at home. His favorite foods here in America are pizza and other Italian Dishes. Pizza isn't very popular in New Zealand. Back home Vladi lettered in Rugby and here, at Ligonier, he was a member of the foot- ball squad. When Vladi returns home, he will finish college, the equivalent of A m e r ic an high Schools, and then go on to the University. He an- ticipates a career in the diplomatic field. When Vladi leaves Ligonier, he will leave m any friends. We only hope he enjoyed America as much as we enjoyed him. Vladimir H artevelt 7' if Jim explained the rudiments of football before Vladi joined the team. A V. Our high school has had five exchange students from the Philippines, Belgium, Norway, Chile, and this year, New Zealand. The A,F.S. sponsors two weekends for the exchange students living in the Pittsburgh area. The winter weekend is usually held in February, when two assemblies are pre- sented: one during the day for the students, and the other in the evening for the general public. Friendship shares sold at these assemblies help to finance the next ex- change student. A trip to the Laurel Mountain Ski Slopes, a tour of Fort Ligonier and Rolling Rock, and a party for the A,F.S'ers and their hosts fill the weekend with varied ac- tivities. These were the boys on the golf team. Ligonier's playing section, 4, during the 1965 season, consisted of such schools as Derry, Latrobe, Jeannette, Hempfield, and Greensburg. All home matches and daily practices were held at Ligonier Country Club. Dan McDonald and Teddy Roehrig represented Ligonier in the W,P,l,A.L, tournament. This year they were varied by perform- ances of native songs and dances as well as the customary talks. A dance was held Friday evening so that everyone interested might meet the exchange students. Saturday morning a trip to Laurel Mountain Slopes proved quite challenging and fun-filled for those who had never skied. Lunch at Red Arrow Lodge and a tour of Fort Ligonier completed the after- noon schedule. The Martin family and Vladi were gracious hosts at a party Saturday evening at their home. Sunday morning the A,F,S,'ers attended a breakfast sponsored by the Ministerial Association, and church ser- vices. Q an Junior High Cheerleaders This year our football team was small in size but proved to be powerful even though it was usually outweighed by its opponents. The season started out with a victory over Ramsey. The next game, a defeat at the hands of Latrobe, was disappointing. B ut at Jenners-Boswell, our team turned out to be an even match for the Bears. The victory in, our traditional game with Laurel Valley 5 fi, i helped to bolster our team's morale, but the game with Somerset was another dis- appointment, for although We were tied in the first half, we cou1dn't hold them through the second. Although a season of ups and downs, the loyal support of the fans with the energetic assistance of the cheer- leaders, encouraged the team to play the best ball possible. D. Hall, H. Thomas, D.
