Uur Sufzerrlisting Princrpal Mr Wylre explarns to Gomer Laszlo Chuck Jrm and John Class and Stu dent Council presidents Abe rn con s theory on Chrrstran leadershrp Thrs year not only the senror class b.rt also the entrre school was sad when Commencement arrrved and passed Both faculty and student body together lost a much beloved frrend and advrsor when followrng twenty years of farth ful devoted leadershrp Mr Wylre was gradu ated with the Class of 54 Members of past and present classes owe Mr Wylre a vote of thanks for the many rm provements he has rnstrgated srnce he took the helm rn 1934 The brggest one was rn the build rngs themselves He began wrth only srx rooms plus the audrtorrum rn the high school and with rn two years he planned and watched the school enlarge to rts present srze Basketball the band the commercial course and more recently the home economics and drivers educatron courses were all started by Mr Wylre The agriculture course whrch had been drscontrnued was re rng what rs now the musrc room was moved to rts present locatron The grade school burldrng was also improved throughout the years prrmar rly with the addrtron of a kindergarten New floors new lrghtrng new furniture new text books new parnt all were added when they were needed mainly after the observrng M Wylre made the necessary suggestions All meetmgs pertarnrng to school welfare were unfarlrngly attended by the Prrncrpal Per haps his enloyment of conventrons particularly the annual American Association of School Ad mrnrstrators get together usually held every Feb ruary at Atlantrc City rnsprred hrs endorsement of the first senror class trrp to Washrngton D C The students wrll always be eternally grateful to Mr Wylre for this now tradrtronal chance to vrsrt the natrons caprtol and also for the wonderful opportunrtres for advancement offered by the J-I Scarfe Scholarshrp which he was rnstrumental rn establishing Our Mr Wylre was and rs promrnent rn lo cal crvrc affairs He was a charter member and first president of the Rotary Club and has en loyed publishing Mountain Dew the Rotary newspaper for many years Through hrs posr trons as past Commander of the Amerrcan Le gron and past chaplain of the Veterans of For ergn Wars hrs wisdom and lndustry have been felt throughout the communrty Hrs Chrrstran rdeals have been shown rn hrs work at the Pres byterran Church as an elder and as the teacher of the Cooperative Sunday School class they are also very evrdent rn hrs day to day lrvrng The love and admrratron whrch every Valleyrte has for Mr Wylre was observed at the testrmonral drnner held rn his honor on Aprrl 22 All great men have some form of relaxatron artrstrc abrlrty hangs rn the oFfice where three of hrs lovely works are on drsplay Woodworkrng IS another of hrs hobbres yet perhaps hrs great est satrsfactron comes from his continuous study of Abraham Lrncoln He has become a relrable authorrty on the sublect and hrs outstandrng talks on the lrfe and works of Lrncoln are very much rn demand throughout the Valley Now that hrs official dutres are ended he hopes to tour the Lrncoln Terrrtory rn the not too drstant future Althouqh Mr Wylre has graduated from the office of prrncrpal he rs not lost to us entrrely Hrs sound cheerfully grven advrce calm rntel lrgent leadershrp and lust crrtrcrsms are strll avarlable to needy students and adults alrke Hrs aorng wrll leave a vord but the students real rze that therr loss rs the Valleys garn and wrsh Mr Wylre qood luck and prosperrty rn hrs years cf retrrement . . ' - C'oaclceA, Manage:-A and C'laeef-leadef-A COACHES This year our most capable coaches Mr Derrickson and Mr Garrlson did an outstand :ng 'ob in training the players unto fine shape They molded the boys into a superb offensive and defensive unit which brought them many a happy moment along with a few sad ones Mr Derrickson and Mr Garrison felt quite happy after the players brought home the best record in years with sux wms and two losses The coaches were always ready to help the boys out of any rough spots After the last game the victory over Derry the boys were a little hllarl ous with due cause and gave the coaches the water treatment but the coaches didnt seem to mind it at all MANAGERS The hard workung managers for our foot ball team had a difficult time as there were only two of them this year Amid cries of Eddue get me a new set of cleats Stormont youll get thrown In the showers tonight if you dont get us and Gimme some tape for my finger they took charge of the cage equipment first and kits and the water buckets After our last game the promise of the showers was fulfilled for the managers and coaches they emerged soaking wet but smlllng CHEERLEADERS During every seventh period practuce for perfectlon was carried on by the cheerleaders under the careful supervision of Mass Keffer Pep meetings held in the gym were much more successful than those previously held m the auditorium Leaving the force are the honorable retiring seniors vuvacuous Ruth Fletcher and ver satule Betsy Farrell whale elected to take their place are the freshmen Shelva Graver and Pearl Menzle Among our memories Marthas ceaseless vitality pep meetings In the gym a wmnmg team to support Audrey un consciously admitting she has the loudest vonc Betsys great co operation un lounmg the force her lumor year riding with the Band new uniforms assembly practice Mr Derrickson and Mr Garrison ponder over a play In the game grin- mf' Managers Stormont and Welmer work over Murdock and Han z Mlss Kelfer smiles proudly as Audrey Martha Susie Nancy Betsy and Ruth execute a new cheer I C I . Faculty manager Mr McCutcheon tallles d vidual basketball scores with managers Shamey and Klslan Derry Twp and East Huntingdon Then came the heart breaking loss to Youngwood on their own floor Leading and going into the final half minute of the game the Mounties hit a streak of bad luck and forfeited the game to Young wood Everyone thought that Ligonier had finally blown up but they came right back to win the opening league game with Derry Boro Don Packer who had not shown too much prior to this game came through to help cinch the win with 24 points Chuck Hantzs scoring 22 points against W P l A L Section XV B race tying them with Irwm for first place Ligonier ended the game with a healthy 424 average against Blairsville s 209 average an field goals the Mountles also had a good lead at the foul line They then romped over Penn Twp with Kinnlk and Hantz leading the way Havmg taken Penn so easily Ligonier really had to hustle to beat Franklm Boro in an exhibition game Although Frank lin did not have the height they gave the Moun ties a lesson in ball handling When the Mounties travelled to Irwin to play the much celebrated Knights the bottom fell out of the apple cart and Irwm easily stole the game to the tune of 66 to 35 The Mountues bounced back from the defeat they had taken at the hands of Irwm to beat Franklm Twp But Ligonier couldn t stand the pace and was handed a whipping from Export in the last three minutes of play The Mountaineers couldnt seem to get started after that and lost a hard game to Derry Boro that all but put the Mountles out of the race for the title Although Ligonier turned back Penn Two the Irwin Knights gave the Mountles a severe beating in the next game that forced the Mountaineers into a tie with Export for the second place berth in the Section 15 B race The last qame of the Mountnes season was Panthers When the smoke had cleared the score board showed that the Mountnes had soundly beaten the Panthers for the second place spot When the County tournament started at St Vmcents new field house Ligonier met and conquered West Newton thus getting a shot at the quarter finals In the next game Ligonier faced the Irwin Jayvees and beating them moved up to the Semi finals Sewlckley Twp rolled back Ligonier s attack and beat the Moun ties by a small margin Derry Boro and Se wtckley met to decide the championship and Derry took the honors to become the Class B Champions for the year . The undependent gurls teams were agaun organuzed and these teams occupued the gym at noontumes on Tuesdays and Thursdays The first game between the Super Senuors and the D S S N K T a lunuor team was a thruller The final score was 8 7 D S S N K T wunnung Thus low score was due to much guardung and unex peruence sunce ut was so early un the season The freshman had two good teams and proved tough competutuon for many of the older teams The sophomores had a hard fightung team named the Bobby Soxers These names were chosen by the gurls themselves and some were quute clever one being the Dragnet Gang and another called the Green Centupedes un refer noontume games were duscontunued un January on account of lack of referees and other munor detauls Kelp In tr-amun1lA Thus year as un years gone by the Mono gram Club sponsored the boys untramurals to decude whuch class had the best basketball team These games are well attended by students who want to see theur team become the champions for thus year Last year the sophomores beat the lunuors now senuors to wun the school cham puonshup for that year The first game found the freshmen facung the strongest senuor team to graduate from Lug onuer un a number of years The senuors had the heught and reboundung talent un Don Packer Don Hoza Bull Kunnuk and Chuck Hantz along wuth an excellent ball handler un Gene Perla Although the freshmen were a luttle green and unexperuenced they gave the senuors a rough tume but when the buzzer sounded the senuors had won bv a score of 34 I3 In the next cuame last year s champions the lunuors met the sophomores un another rousung basketball game The sophomores wuth Don Morse leadunfu the way couldnt quute get started and the lunuors started huttlng the basket wuth practucally every shot they trued After a fierce struggle the Iunuors pulled ahead to beat the sophomores 23 8 After a few days lay off the sophomores took on the task of beatung the freshmen Thus game was more evenly matched and the teams had a harder tume tryung to beat each other Wuth Don Morse controlling the boards and a few competent shooters outsude the puvot the sophomores finally drew ahead of the freshmen to wun the game 'll lO Then un the most excutung game of the tour nament the senuors played the lumors wuth half the school rootung for the senuors and the other half for the lunuors Both teams were un fine shape for the final game for thus year and the last game some of the boys would play for a long tume The lunuors who were slightly under par put up a losung fight agaunst the senuors who were out to wun thus one because of the beatung they had taken last year at the hands of these bovs As ut turned out the senuors bare ly saueezed out a 30 28 wun over the lunuors Finally came the game whuch was upper most un everyones mund the varsuty faculty game The day before thus game the faculty named a few rules whuch the varsuty had to obey the varsuty could not shoot at any basket except the one desugnated by the faculty captaun they could only shoot foul shots from theur knees and no one over 5 feet ll unches could shoot for a field qoal Of course thus only applued to the varsuty and not to the faculty Fortunately this only lasted for one quarter then the varsuty could qet down to some seruous shootung In the final munutes of the aame the first team cut down the score luttle bv luttle but the faculty had too bug a lead and the varsuty had to guve un to a 38 37 loss 0 ll - . 1, . . . . . . .
