SEHUUL RIREETURS FREE W!-XRTIME PROGRAM XVe point with pride to these public spirited men who. faced with the great problem of directing the education of our youth, have proved to be wise. tolerant. and progressive. It is largely through their efforts, and due to their intense interest. that the Nlountaineers will in the near future boast of a modern recreational field with baseball diamond. football field. tennis courts. and track course. In tact. they have already entered into contract with B. Ferrari of Latrobe for the grading of the entire thirteen acres which were generously deeded to L. H. by the Byers-Tosh Post of the American Legion, The vvork will begin this spring as soon as the weather permits. Our Board of Education is also responsible for the cheery note lent by the fresh coats of paint on the exteriors of both the Grade School and High School buildings and in the hall of the High School. Then too, we were very glad to welcome a new slide machine which has made more enjoyable many phases of our studies. Of course. the members of the Board have many other tasks. routine and unspectacular but important, which claim their atten- tion: such as coping with the difficult situation of filling positions in these times when labor is at a premium. VVe of Ligonier High realize our good fortune in having the valuable guidance of these five men and take this opportunity to express to them our appreciation for their admirable service to the school and to the community. Nick Malkoch Vice President , Louis Bearer Treasurer .. Louise Hantz Secretary . . Bill Cochrane School Days! School Daysv, these oft- spoken words described our thoughts at the end of summer vacation. Everyone put on his best Sunday-go-to-meetin' clothesv, for our first day as upperclassmen was to be a memorable occa- sion. Not many weeks had passed until all the family began to participate in school activities. Nearly half of the football squad was com- prised of juniors, and our athletic skill was well represented in basketball. Early in September, Brother Malkoch, who is, by the way, vice president of the Student Council, was again elected President of our fam- ily. He with the other officers planned a Weiner roast to be held at Adams Falls where every one had a grand time and discovered our new coach, Mr. Testa, was a jolly, good fellow. More good times were to follow. Came November 3 and Sadie Hawkins visited L. H. S. bringing all the Clems', and Clementines . Luckily, she caught nobody, so Marryin, Sam had no chalice to execute his authority. Later on we held a Valentine Dance where Bob Wol- ford and Louise Hantz were chosen King and Queen of Hearts. Even though we number only 85, our little familyi' is one of the best to attend L. H. S. We have been glad to welcome this year two new active class members: Bill Bradley, a city slickern from Braddock, and Jim Hartzell from Langley High. Both have made good in the Louie'i, Nick, Bill, and Louise discover the names of many L.H.S. Alumni on the Bethlen Home Honor Roll Band, while Bill made the Basketball Iayvees and Iim the football squad. There have been many outstanding students in our family. In the field of math and science we point with pride to Bob McKelvey. For class arguments we always depended on Carolyn Seaholm and Harry Wilt. In English class Louiev Bearer entertained us with amusing themes especially about his ill-fated car and Bob Dutcher with his personality plus oral re- ports. At least we have attempted to acquire information that will prove valuable during our senior year. Never have we forgotten our part in the War effort. Every Thursday we brought our dimes or quarters to invest in Uncle Sam's Treasury. Our three cabins have tried to keep our Defense Stamp percentages above 90? all year. It meant going without that coke or sundae but we didnit mind. A small overiiow from our group is already in the Armed Services. Besides we realize there will be more before many moons have passed. After a junior Class Play and a junior- Senior Prom, it wasn't long until all the Clems and Clementines', could discard their shoes and stuffed shirts and live again the life of Riley . Once more we would be free until fall, when once again and for the last year, we would enter the little old school housev in the mountains. Mountaineer - 21 E Caryl, Duane, Dorothy, and Bill plan a square dance with music furnished by Tink Queer and his Buck- wheat Stompersf' K'Howdy, therein XVhy, howdy, brother Nicelylv Grab your shootin, irons, neighbor, and hop on the back of Hortense, my mule. Donit you know itis time to register for ilarnin' season, at the old school house?', By gum, brother, you're right! I plum for- got, and we'll be known as Sophomores, toof, You,re right, neighbor. Weid better hurry and round up the rest of our hillbilly classmates. XVe,re expectin, mighty good huntin' our second season at L. H. Sf' After arriving at the school house we were assigned to Hunting Lodges 8, 9, and 14, Where we loaded our old double barrels with plenty of pep and activities. Our first big gamei' hunters turned out to be Scoop Campbell, Ben Fish, and Turkey Clawson, who found a football suHicient ammu- nition. We hope in the next two seasons these hillbillies will be able to tackle bigger game. YVe Sophomores managed to keep the old sugar bowl filled by adding something new to school activities, a Variety dance. At this un- usual event all the Daisies and Clems found themselves being swung hilariously about the gym during the Paul Ionesv dance, or the lucky winners of a luscious cake Won in the cake walk. Of course, all faithful hillbillies attended our old fashioned square dance with good ole mountain musicn furnished by none other than Tink Queer and his Buckwheat Stompersn. We were also proud of having the honor of choosing the May Queen and sponsoring the annual May Day Coronation and Dance. Deciding our sugar bowl was full enough, we leveled it off by buying some records for the use of all the hillbilly students at L. H. S. MERRY SEHUUL SPIRIT ERERTER RY OFFICERS President ....,, . . Bill Nicely Vice President . .. ., Caryl Snyder Secretary ., . . . Dorothy McMullen Treasurer . Duane Craig IVe sent three very capable nimrods, Pat Graham, Scoop Campbell, and Emma Peterson. to represent us on the Student Council. This made us feel proud that We had a hand in our school government. Our talented brother, Chick Nicely, found that sliding a trombone was much easier than toting a musket and ball, thus earning for himself the name of i'Tommy Dorsey of Ligonier Highv. Weller, Iosie Corter, and Dot McMullen, our nimble athletes, proved their mountaineer heritage by their shoot- ing ability on the basketball floor. Our first classmate to change f1'om overalls to the blues of Uncle Samis Navy was Bob Conley, who en- listed and left in November for Sampson Train- ing Center, New York. At the middle of the season we were sad- dened by the resignation of Miss Cross, one of our instructors and class advisers. The vacancy was soon filled by the attractive Miss Ellington. On the day of her arrival all the Li'l Abnersn tried to make as good an impression as possible by wearing their best bibs and tuckersv. We turned out especially skillful in selling Mountaineer subscriptions when we brought in the biggest catch of all the other classes. It was a close race between the lodges with each one striving to reach the hundred per cent mark. The amazing results of this competition were Lodge 8-13891, Lodge 14-132921, and Lodge 9 -129'Z. Well, brother Nicely, untie Hortense and let's be gettin' back to the hills. I reckon we're all pretty wore out after such a boomin' season. Itill take us nigh onto half the summer to get conditioned for next yearf, Right, neighbor. Rest up good. We're plannin, bigger and better huntin' for when we git to be Juniorsn. ARE FUHIVIALLY I ITIATEU THIS YE II OFFICERS President , , Max Mickey Vice President . jimmy Simon Secretary . jay Hall Treasurer Kenneth Hull After having scrubbed our faces and donned our shoes we, one hundred and thirteen be- wildered boys and girls, came down from our mountain homes to become the Class of 1948 and the youngest members of the Mountaineer family. In the first weeks of school we found ourselves in many a wrong nook or corner and in many a wrong room. But after having become acquainted with our numerous relatives and new surroundings, we found we liked it all the better. From the beginning of the school year we awaited with dread the much talked of initia- tion. The day it came was a trying one. We, with our green ribbons, curlers, and huge ear rings, must have been a comical sight. Wesley Leonard, one of our brothers, was brought forth on a stretcher and covered with bandages. He was the Fresh freshman. Bill Dubosh, playing the part of a pet puppy, was led around on a leash by jane Vogele. It was also decided that Charles Robb would make a most beautiful girl. The eldest members of the family, namely the Seniors, held a party for us in the evening at which everyone enjoyed drinking cider out of little brown jugs. Sjx of our brothers represented our group in football while our contribution to a champion basketball team was five. Two of our sisters, Kenny is listening to a lecture by Jim, jay, and Xhx about the advantages of remaining in school, however to no avail because he left L.H.S. after football 8618011 Bean Fish and Bean Eisaman, were found to be peppy cheerleaders and jim Simon a capable football and basketball manager. Several other members of the family joined in to contribute their skill in twirling batons and leading the band. Our class was the Hrst to study Pennsyl- vania History. This we did under the guidance of Coach Testa. XVe have found Miss Dickin- son's favorite saying, If you wring hard enough, it will always come out in the washn, is quite true. XVe also discovered that Ivanhoe is quite interesting. Our spirit was shown when in November a magazine subscription campaign was held by our class. Room the winner, was honored with a party which only members of Room 3 could attend. Although Room 3 led the Moun- taineer Campaign with 11576, Room 4 was a close runner-up. Every Thursday our patriotism was shown by the buying of Defense Stamps and Bonds. XVe have now completed the first steps in our high school education. Although a few of our family have dropped out of school, those remaining are looking forward to coming down from their mountain homes to greet the family once more and to become Sophomores. 'Now Where did I put that dummy?D quizzed Leola Zimmerman. i'Here I amf' retorted Bob NVolford-and then- Oh, you don't mean me?M No, Leola, our capable Editor-in-chief, was looking for the Mountaineer dummy. Room 13 had been the center for a busy group, while the dummy was in the making. It had seen industrious Staff members making out various picture schedules, cropping pictures, mounting them, and revising first drafts of write-ups. And all the time, Miss Martin, our helpful editorial adviser, was standing by with indis- pensable suggestions for all. Mr. Mathews, with the duties of business adviser, also deserves recognition. He, aided by Nancy Heintzelman and Jim Noel as head managers, directed a very successful subscription campaign. Com- plete credit goes to this group for obtaining the ads and, collectively, upholding the financial end of the project. Everyone looked forward to the day when Mr. Gradler, our pho- tographer, first visited our school. That day the Seniors were all dressed up for their individual pictures. Then in january he returned to finish taking activity photographs. The Staff heaved a sigh of relief when the pictures were mounted and sent to the engraver. Soon the journalists had their write-ups finished. After being checked and typed, this copy was ready for the dummy. VVith the greatest care the dummy had been compiled. The Mountaineer was ready to go to press. All that was left to do was to wait for the big day, when the year books were distributed to the students. That day is always a significant occasion for the Staff. Nftllllli2lllll't'I' -- 34 GUUD HEADI G LEADS TU WIUEH HUHIZU S It has been proved throughout the years that the library has played an essential part in the education of the student body. The library provides us with excellent reading material, interesting facts con- cerning the lives of our authors for book reports, and various other information which prepares us for our daily studies to a greater extent. Not only the high school students but also those from the grade school have access to the shelves of informative and entertain- ing books. However, the library would be a place of chaos and confusion if it were not for the assistance of the capable librarians. These librar- ians, under the efficient supervision of Miss McIntyre, perform many duties such as signing out books, making over-due slips, unscrambling duplicate cards, and cleaning up the library. Besides these, they must always be on hand to assist students, especially underclassmen, in find- ing suitable books. This year the trend for reading material has turned towards the biographical type of story. Therefore among the books our faculty adviser has selected for us are jack London by Carst, First XfVoman Doctor by Baker. Marconi by Coe, and Alexander Hamilton by Sinertenko. There has also been a large number of replacements for old books this year. The librarians deserve a great amount of consideration since they are willing to give up their spare time in order to assist the students. They deeply appreciate the fact that the majority of the students are willing to cooperate. ogdrariand Standing: VVinc-land, Eisaman, M Hanger, Kinsey, Hartman, Get- ii'lll'Cl' Adviser Miss Mclnl temv, Hamill, McMullen, Moore I- - 1-,' , tyre, Higgs, Sitting: Stanislaw, M. Oh, pardon mein exclaimed the attractive girl who had just bumped into a green freshien outside Miss Markeris office . . . Greatly startled, the young freshman inquired, Who was that?', Oh, that was one of Miss Markeris Stoogesf, answered the stately Senior, none other than Marge Egner. They deliver absentee slips, mail, and messages to the teachers. You see Katie, Mr. Wylie's secre- tary, has a dependable student sit in the hall just outside her office each period to run errands and act as messenger . . The Freshman questioned excitedly, You mean they donit have to attend classes. Say, I'd like a job like that around schoolf, No, laughed the Senior, they arenit excused from classes, but if some student, usually an upperclassmen, wants to be a Stooge she asks Katie to assign her a period of hall duty . . Oh,', replied the Freshman, looking somewhat disappointed, I guess it's not an honor for a poor little Freshie like me, Iill probably have to wait a couple vears. The Senior, after thinking a second or two, smilingly suggested, Since you canit be a Stooge, why donit you volunteer for Hall Patrol duty upstairs? Unfortunately, since we don't have lockers, at the begin- ning of the year some of our possessions were mysteriously disappear- ing from the hall. To prevent this, Mr. VVylie named certain depend- able students to patrol the hall during their study hall. Now you might volunteer for this servicef, Fairly Hying to the office, the Freshie returned a few minutes later to inform the Senior that Katie had accepted her services and would keep her in mind for duty someday the regular , was busy or absent. fl.. ff SLM 364015 566 Afilflflfelfl, CULLEETUHS UP HEVE UE Say therel Are you one of these fellows who sell us tickets for the football and basketball games? In spite of the fact that an open football field like ours is a hard one at which to work, fewer people were over-changed this year than ever before. During the latter part of the '43-,44 school year the upperclass- men became quite enthusiastic about plans for a Student Council. Class meetings were called and after having approved its organiza- tion, each class selected two representatives: namely, Edna Blackburn, Robert Noel, Elizabeth Hood, james Ramsey, Lisle Hartman, Robert McKelvey, Caryl Snyder, and Edward Clawson, who completed writ- ing the constitution shortly before the school term ended. XVith the opening of school this year, each homeroom and recog- nized organization selected one of its number for the Student Council. These representatives, twenty-two in number, met as a body for the Hrst time late in November. At that meeting they set their goal for the school year. This goal included the presentation of regular assembly programs, the impres- sing upon the students' minds the preservation a11d improvement of the appearance of school property, a Christmas Homeroom Decorating Contest, and arranging a schedule of social events. The members of the Student Council feel that for a new organi- zation they have been successful in attaining some of their objectives and have achieved better understanding between students and Faculty. They attribute much of their success to the guidance of their capable faculty adviser, Miss Eunice Dickinson, who met with them the Fourth Period on the first Friday of each month. Taking all the facts into consideration, the members consider this a successful year and they have high hopes that the organization will grow in importance in future years. After Miss Dickinson has awaited the return of the runners to the post officei' for sometime, they come rushing in. Along with stamps come pretzels, candy bars, and gum. This loot is divided among the salesmen and their adviser. Room 6 has led the high school with 1007 every week, while nearly all other homerooms have followed with 90? or above. The high school as a whole succeeded in maintaining a 90? average for a sufficient number of weeks, thus, we are now the proud possessors of two flags, the Minute Nlanv and the Rattle Snaken. Our statistics show that we have maintained a 9492 average and have invested 932,335.80 in stamps and bonds for the first semester. This is due, perhaps, to the respected position held by music in any instance but, probably, and we like to think so, because of the fine quality of music produced by this organization. Among the selec- tions featured by the orchestra this year were 'iThe Emperor YValtz, Fifth Symphonyf Oriental Patrolf, National Nledleyfl and i'Piano Concerto. Tuning begins with a few left-over notes of K'Don,t Felice Me Inv issuing from Chick', Nicelyls baritone. But finally all is quiet and practice gets under way. However Mr. Laughlin invariably detects some defect and it may be a few extra notes supplied bv one of our swingsters. If you watch closely you will see Mr. Laughlin take a worn paper from his pocket and de- cisively place a de-merit after that swing addictis name. This is only one of the many incidents that occur before a selec- tion emerges polished and ready to be presented to the public. Our public performances this year included the junior and senior Class Plays and a series of lectures sponsored by the Rotary. You may remem- ber the shrewd and clever Yankee who found himself in King Arthur's Court, and who developed all the miracles of the twentieth century to baffle the Court of King Arthur. Mary Ieanne Ambrose, who played the role of Queen Cuenevere, offered an excellent characterization of a domineering queen who practically ran the good-natured and some- what discouraged King Arthur, who was played extremely well by Dick Hegan. Queen Morgan Le Fay, the scheming, black-hearted woman who sent shivers up and down your spine, was characterized by Esther Smith. Her villainous partner was none other than the magician Merlin. Bill Potts portrayed this part so realistically that you probably had trouble sleeping afterwards. Sandy and Elaine were two very charming young ladies of the Court and they were played by Nancy Heintzelman and Lois Betz. lim Noel, as Hank Bennett, the Connecticut Yankee, mastered a difficult and screamingly funny role, and his antics delighted all. Marion, his sister, was breezily and happily played by Maxine Frye, and Mrs. Bennett, the harrassed mother of Hank, was handled expertly by Marjorie Egner. Clarence, the mischievous page boy, was played with a great deal of vigor by Ralph Douglas, while Charles Anthony and Bill Casey showed how they would have been very excellent knights of old in the roles of Sir Sagramore and Sir Launcelot. The play was made more effective by Miss Mclntyre who had charge of the colorful costumes and Mr. Otto and his boys who created a most artistic and effective stage setting. Miss Ellington and Mr. Weller had the tedious task of selecting and applying make-up. Dean Earnest controlled the lighting effects while Lynn Graham collected thehnecessary properties. The programs were made by Miss Kosano- vxc . The Class of 1945 can be very proud of their final dramatic pro- duction. This Club is open to boys and girls enrolled in Vocational Ag classes who are interested in the improvement and promotion of Agriculture. It is an intra-curricu- lar as well as an extra-curricular activity. This year the meetings were held twice monthly, following serious farm problems with social activities as entertainment. The funn part of the meetings included parties, rifle shoots, dances, and inter-school basketball games with four neighboring schools. Under the supervision of Mr. Otto these students have helped in the production of food for war through their vocational projects. They learn and do by projects and shop work the art of repairing farm machinery, gardening, soil conservation, and food production. During the fall the students attend all the local fairs and demon- strations pertaining to agriculture. Field trips are taken to various places to provide learning by seeing and doing. Most of their time at school is divided between classroom subjects and shop. In the classroom they make experiments and receive instructions on scien- tific farming. In their shop periods they are taught the use and care of farm tools and turn out some fine pieces of work. This was clearly demonstrated at the Farmers' Institute held in the high school build- ing this year, at which time the shop articles were put on display An- other example of their mechanical and artistic skill was shown in the stage setting for A Connecticut Yankeef, Due to conditions the annual Farm Show at Harrisburg was not held and project winners were not awarded by this trip. Nevertheless, two places in the statewide contest at Penn State were won by our boys: Lawrence Ament placed in Swine, while Gerald Smith won in Vegetable Gardening. blUlllllilllll't'l' - 44 lfmior CKMA pfag Th1 Class of 1946 pl1s1 1116 11 111611 1111111 11 111ss p11x the 11111 Dont 1x1 ep I'Illl1 NV11tl11g on Tuesd IX X133 19 111 t111 I lgo1111r IIlg,11 S11111111 lllC1lt0l 111111 The 10111e11x L0ll9lSt1llg of t11l1 1 acts vx IS x11x 1f111t1x11x C1111 1t1 11 11x Nllss 131111111 D 1 1118011 xxho 11111 11 1 11111111 1881811111 P1o1J11t X1CKC1XCX THE CAST 11111 Ramble 1 1 11111 1 1 1111 B111 B1 11111x Toodles 111s xo1l11g11 s1st11l xx 110 IS l'CC1llClIlg E11 111o1 ISCIIIPC B1ttx 111s older s1st1 1 xx 11o p 1x s th1 11111s 1111 111 Wo 1111 CJXYCII 1115 11t1111 xx11o 18 111 11111111111 tl 1ve1e1 Lollls B1 1111 S111111 111s lllllt 111o1oscop1 '1n 1111111 C Cttt'lIlX IIIIIV xv11o 18 1 150011 11tt11 p11 11 111 111s111l1g C 111 st11 xv11o IS l11llf..flL to xxo111 B111 C 111111 1111 S111x L0ll xx11o f1s1l11 1t1s XIl111rx 1 who glggks D1x111 X 111111 xxho 18 t11111 of xvaltlng 1111 B11l1to11 K 1t111111 I1 P11111 B011 1111110111 Amos 'Xt1x1I1S who IS l11t111st1 11 111t1q11eS 111111 XI 1rtl11 OT111111 xx11o xx 111ts 1118 l11o111x N1111 X1 11110111 May 11111121211 C111?1i11111111g111 Sp1'111q 111 194111 1 11115111131 t111 11111111 X x 1stl xx IS 111111l1t111 XPII1 78 944 ll ffx11111 lS1 1 xx IS fl111C1 to 11p11ltx 11111 xx IS soon 1111511111 11x 1011 o 1111 1s T 1 O111111s X1llSlC1ll1S p11x111 then the 601011111011 p1o11 881011 st11t111 T111 theme 11131111 of the LTIIIXCTSC xx 18 c ll 111111 Ollt hx 1L11x oxs 01 E1rt11 S11x 11111 S1 1 C1111 Clllg, 11111 p1x111q ho1111g1 hx t111 p11s111t1t1o11 of t C 11111copl1 S 1x11 S111 11111 '11l11111t to 0111 N1 xx CJUCCII T111s 111 111111111 1111111o11x xx IS plo 1111111 t1111111g,11 th1 1f1olts of Nllss C loss t 1 110111.11011 D1111tol t111 x l1lOllS 8011110111 s 1111t 1o111111ltt11s 11111 t1 111111tx lC1XlS T111 Clllllt lllC.1llC1Cd t111 1011ONXl1lfJ,' T111 QLIEC Il of 1943 1944 Io x C 1 1 11111 Xtt1l1c1.111ts 811111115 XI11l11111 N1l111 r11ls11 111211111 T1111 Tl Xtt11111 1111s UIIIOTS N1 11x 1 111111 51111111 Sl 1Lst111 1' 5ITllt11 X10lI1lI 11111 1 r Xtt1l111111t Sop11o111ol1 l1l0l'1SC1l XI 1rx D111 C 1111 S111 1161 The Q1111111 of 1944 1943 NI IIN Lou Essex Xtt111111 111ts SCIIIOIS 11111111 Nlc111x XI llx Lou L 1rlme1 Xtt1 1111 11115 1111lo1 s 1 011151 13011116111 XI11111111 Egllll -Xtt11111 11118 8011110111011 s 1111 C 1 tt1 Lo111s1 II111tz om P1 1's1ll11g -'ktte11d1l1t 11 r1s11111 111 1J0l0t1lX 'x11NI1l111 ll Poetlc Ndlfltill I 11111 Zl1111'111r111an 11st1r IJOIIIHC XIdC.1xlx H11ra111s C1'111xs IIIC1 XI11g111r1t1- N11m11'1 L I - 1 A Y 1 . 41 1 f . . . va ,' . H. S. were smiled on kindly by fate when Hay- mond J. Testa was secured as athletic- director and coach last August. Mr. Testa has arranged an attractive P. T. program which has kept the boys in- tensely interested. Aside from this, he has devoted the main portion of his time after school to developing a good football team and a great cham- pionship basketball team. GAME BY GAME XVell, folks, here we are on the gridiron again. Our Mountaineers, under the tutelage of a new coach Mr. Ray Testa, a veteran of Guadalcanal, have worked out their creaky joints, polished up their blocking and tackling, and are ready for the season's opener. They are using the Notre Dame system this year with the shift from the T-formation to the box. The boys are rearing and tearing to go so come on all you Blue and XVhite rooters, let's get down to the field. BELL TOVVNSHIP . . . Sept. 16 . . . Salina team. Bearcat Stadium . . . The Mounties suffered a defeat of 19-0 at the hands of the Prepsters tonight in a hard fought game under the lights. The boys just couldn't get rolling but they worried the Haffertymen plenty with a terrific barrage of passes in the fourth quarter. LICONIER vs. DERBY BORO . . . Oct. 7 . . . To- day we journeyed to Derry where we met the Bovard men in a sea of mud and came out at the short end of a 12-0 score. Derry blocked a punt and recovered it behind the goal for one counter and scored on a pass for the second. The Mounties were hampered by a very muddy field and still couldn't get into a winning stride. LICONIER vs. PENN TOYVNSHIP . . . Oct. 1-1 . . . Today was another bad day for the Mountaineers. They dropped their third successive game to a strong team from Claridge. The Nlounties were a listless team the first half and Twp. scored two touchdowns. However they came back in the second half and the game was very close with the final score 12-0 in favor of Penn Twp. LICONIER vs. YOUNGYVOOD . . . Oct. 21 . . . Traveling to Youngwood this afternoon we took a terrific beating. The Maroon and WVhite team scored during On fire Qi iron xxly Q Q 0 J Coach Testa discusses L.l1.S.' athletic program with Co-Capt. The Mountics' line just couldn't hold the hard hitting llailroaders. It is one of the worst defeats that Ligonier has ever suffered. LIGONIER VS. TRAFFORD . . . Oct. 28 . . . The Mountaineers got hold of themselves today. Although the game ended in a scoreless tie, our players were really in there fighting. YVe had one touchdown nullified by a five yard penalty and another bid was stopped just short of the goal line. LICONIEB vs. SOUTH HUNTINCDON . . . Nov. 4 . . . Did you see our baekfield go today? They ran up and down the field all afternoon. And what a seore, 28-0 in favor of Ligonier, with Nickie Malkoch scoring three times and jiggs Hall once! Also give Dick llegan credit for the four points that he made via placement after the touchdowns. LICONIER vs. INDIANA . . . Nov. 11 . . . at In- diana . . . The Mounties completed their season in the proper manner. Hegan, Casey, Hall, Schiefer, and Douglas, the five seniors, played their best game of their respective football careers at Ligonier. Scores were made by Craig and Malkocll in the second and third periods respectively, Craig plunging over from the three and Malkoch on a seventy yard rnn on an off- tackle play. Heganis conversions were good and ran his total to nine out of nine for a perfect seasonal record The hall was autographed and given to Douglas bv his teammates for outstanding work during four vears ah the gridiron. ' YVhen the referee blew the whistle ending the In- diana game, the high school football davs of Dick llegan ltalph Douglas, Bob Schiefer, Bill Casey, Ken llall, and Tom Cairns were ended. To these boys, as well as others who may not be hack next year on account of the war, who have sacrificed much during the past four years to uphold the glory of L. l1.S. on the gridiron, the students av. Ligonier pay tribute. May they fare as well in later life as in the past four years and may thev always be good sports. Caims, Casey, Malkoch. MUU T5 LUSE U LY B UUT UF EB GAMES PLAY This year under the tutelage of Coach Ray Testa. the Mountaineers returned the Section XIII laurels to Ligonier for the fifth time. Only six times out of twenty-eight engagements did the Testalnen come out on the Sll0l't side of the score. The Mounts opened the campaign success- fully against Latrobe on the Ligonier hardwood on Nov. 30 and continued as a house on fire until Dec. 19, when they were handed a reverse score at the hands of Jeannette in a return game away from home. Inaugurating the Section XIII campaign by winning their first seven league encounters, the Testamen then suffered their first League defeat at Derry Twp. by a 28-25 score. The Mounts had been invincible on the home floor up until Feb. 9, when the Blairsville Bobcats took their measure by a 34-SI count. Thus Ligonier suf- fered its last league defeat and had successfully dethroned Derry Boro as Section XIII cham- pions. The Mountis first XV.P.I.A.L. elimination tourney game was with Export on the Latrobe fioor. After a close first quarter, the Mountain- eers began to forge ahead with ease. VVith six minutes still remaining. Coach Testa inserted the whole second team who definitely showed that they could hold ther own against the Sec- tion XXII champions. The final score read: Li- gonier 66, Export with Captain Tom Cairns dropping in fifteen field goals and three charity tosses for a total of thirty-three points to lead the Mounts attack and to break the WV.P.I.A.L. Elim- ination individual scoring record. Ligonieris next game was with Sewickley Twp. in the County Tournament on March 2 at Greensburg, the Mounties copped this one by a 3:2-24 score. That meant that then the Moun- taineers were faced with the problem of whether they should play two games in one day, but this was easily decided by the teamis unanimous play ,em all', vote. At 5:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon the Mountaineers took the floor against WVest Newton, one of the top-flight teams in the County. From the sounding of the very first whistle the Mounts knew that thev had a battle on their hands. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied 6-6, but in the second stanza the Yellow Iackets began to pull ahead and at the end of the half held a 18-12 margin over the Mounties. In the third quarter Ligonier began to fight stubbornly to gain the lead but found themselves still trailing by two points at the outset of the fourth quarter. In the hectic fourth quarter Ligonier began to pound away at the YVest Newton zone defense, and whenithe final gun sounded Ligonier had eked out a 30-28 victory over a valiant XVest Newton five. After quickly dressing and dining on poached 5 'r-53 Ifkllfltdlliet .JQIOVLOP5 Q36 0146! pfdgefd eggs and tea, the Testamen headed for Donora where at 8:00 o'clock they encountered the South Union Blue Devils. The game began quickly with both teams finding the range of the basket, and at the end of the first quarter Ligonier com- manded a 14-8 lead, not showing any signs of fatigue and continuing their cool brand of ball. At the end of the first half, Ligonier was still leading 23-19, however, when the team took the Hoor at the beginning of the third quarter it wasn't the same Ligonier team which had played fast, smooth ball all season. They were badly outscored 12-3 and found themselves trailing by eight points at the beginning of the fourth quarter. But in this stanza, Ligonier regained its confidence and outscored the Blue Devils 22-14, to win by a 48-45 count in one of the most thrill packed games Ligonier had played thus far and therefore entitled them to the right of meeting Etna in the semi-finals the following VVednesday at Norwin High School gym. Six hundred intensely enthusiastic Ligonier fans watched their favorite Mountaineers and Etna play a slow first quarter on fairly even bases with Ligonier holding a slim 6-4 lead at the end of the quarter. But in the second quar- ter Etna began hitting the hoop consistently, and at the end of the half Ligonier found themselves at the short end of a 21-15 score. In the second half Ligonier went into a man-for-man defense, but to no avail, for Etna was cutting fast and making all of their shots count. And in the meantime their man-for-man defense was check- ing the famed Ligonier offense and allowed the Mounties only three points in the third quarter and four in the fourth quarter. When the final gun sounded, Ligonier had been eliminated by a very strong and excellent Etna five by a score of 46-22. Ligonier then turned to the County Tourna- ment and found that they we1'e to meet Bostraver Twp. on Friday, March 9. Upon conquering Rostraver Twp. by a 38-36 score, Ligonier earned the right to meet Youngwood in the final Class B game of the tournament. In this final game the score see-sawed back and forth throughout the first three quarters, but in the final chapter the Railroadcrs rallied and subdued the Ligonier five by a 38-35 score. Thus Youngwood won the Class B VVestmoreland County Tournament for the second consecutive year. Our coach, Ray Testa, has done a great job with his boys, the five Juniors and five Seniors, Dick Hegan, Tom Cairns, Bill Casey. Bill Potts, and Frank Luif, who will be lost to next year's team by graduation. But L. H. S. is justly proud of a team that came through a most difficult season with such success and team work among outstanding athletes. L...-. ,f,,.,,,,, Left to right: Hogan, Capt. Simons, Spinks, Burns, Coach Testa, Stephens, Hunter, Mgr. Shotsbarger. Seated: NVilt, Graham, Nicely, Bradley, ll. Martin. Through the generosity of the patrons of L. II. S. who furnished needed transportation, the Ligonier Junior Varsity was able to complete a major part of the scheduled season, more so than in the previous two years. Because of this the Junior Basketeers were provided with plenty of strong competition. However, with the pa- tience and hard work on the part of Coach Testa and the players, they came through with flying colors. At the outset of the season the situation looked dark indeed for the Junior Mounts. Why? VVell, dropping five tilts in a row is enough to discourage any team. These were dropped to Latrobe, Somerset, Jeannette, a second game with Latrobe, and one with Jeannette. The scores were 29-18, 34-18, 35-16, 14-3, and 35-15, respectively. This proved to be a tonic, for with the formula- tion of a new defense, a new combination of players, and the desire to overcome these ob- stacles, the Junior Cagers at last started to roll. The list of victories continued to grow until it reached nine straight. The first of these was at Hurst with an encouraging score of 25-20, fol- lowed by a fast one at home with Derry Twp. Jayvees and 13-12 thriller at Blairsville. Next came an intra-mural game with the Hadars,,, an L. H. S. pick-up team that included such notable players B. Douglas, D. Earnest, K. Hall, S. Herda, H. Hall, Hall, VV. Kinsey, and D. Shirey. This was an exciting game ending in a 23-20 victory for the Jr. Mounts. The next two games were also played against the Badars,', but the Junior Mounts were not to be outdone by a pick-up team and handed the i'Badarsv the short end of a double count. After these two the Junior Basketeers surprised a much larger Somerset team in an over-time upset with Ligonier on the long end of the 33-32 count. The winning streak ended shortly after a victory over Hurst, when the Derry Twp. lads came back to top the Ligonier Jayvees in an ex- citing game which remains one for the books. The Jayvee season ended with two more vic- tories for the Junior Mounts. These were over Blairsville and the Radars with respective scores of 25-14 and 20-15. Captain John Martin led the scoring this year but close behind were Bradley and VVilt, the latter two swishing the net from close range. Johnny Martin and Bill Cochrane also saw action with the Varsity squad Thus, unhampered by securing transporta- tion and an incomplete schedule as before, the Ligonier Junior Varsity at last had a chance to show what they could do. This they did, turn- ing in an enviable record of between 10 and 13 games-the last three were unofficial, played after school hours-to six defeats. These play- ers also received excellent training and experi- ence which will be of inestimable value to the 1946 Varsity.
