CLASS HISTORY In the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Two, 310 young and energetic Americans entered Ligon ' s hallowed walls as freshmen. These giggling girls and frolicking boys were about to begin a great expedition in search of knowledge and truth. We realized that the journey up Mt. Success would be a difficult one. There would be obstacles to block us. Many of us would fall by the way side, but for us who remained there was a citation, a diploma, which would open many doors for us in the future. So after having packed our gear and met our guides, who were Mesdames M. R. Cook, A. M. Levingston, B. P. Ingram, D. W. Revis ; others were Miss M. C. Bullock and Messrs, R. E. Stewart, D. R. Ingram, G. F. Newell and Coach Peter H. Williams, we started climbing up Mt. Success. As we climbed many of us began to branch out into the various crevices of extracur- ricular activities. Four very energetic young ladies, Mary Collins, Ruthie Goodson, Paulette Harris and Juliette Evans joined the cheering squad. Sallie Sparks, seemingly born to lead, was elected 2nd vice president of the student council. Alma Smith and Bobby Jones won second place in the physical science and biological divisions of the science fair. During the year Louis Alston, Malcolm Debnam and James High became affiliated with the marching band. The year was filled with so much for us all that it seemed to have slipped away from us. Well, it was September again. We were a little more than a fourth of the way to the top. We stopped to get new supplies, new guides, and a few more climbers. The new climbers were graduates of Washington High School who had come to join us. When we left under the capable guidance of Mesdames I. E. Washington, A. M. Levingston, M. V. Lindsey, E. H. Perry, L. H. Webb; others were Miss Rosalyn John- son, Miss M. C. Bullock, Miss M. C. Lee, Messrs, Howard Cunningham, D. R. Ingram, H. E. Archer, and M. C. Hill, we were 377 strong. Many of our boys, namely, David Alston, Michael Chavis, James Goode, Larry Gra- ham, Ralph Guys, Ardo Holt, Robert Mitchener, Donald Poole, Ralph Pope, Michael Ridley, Percy Smith and Robert Watson joined the football team. With the help of these he- men, the Little Blues were declared Eastern District Champions. During this same year Fred Davis began his famous training career. Larry Spence made the varsity basketball squad while James Melvin, James John- son, Robert Drakeford, David Johnson, Jesse Clements, Leland Branch and John Haywood qualified for the J.V. With the help of James Melvin and Larry Graham, Ligon ' s baseball team ended their season with a 9-2 record. In spring of ' 64 John Smith, Charles Worth, Thomas Hilliard, Lawrence Clemmons and Bessie White joined the tennis team. During the following year the team was de- clared state champions. Barbara Allen reigned as Miss Ligon High. Lillie Miller, Ethel Johnson, Brenda Faulk, and Bessie White were contestants in The World Peace Speaking Contest. The winner, Brenda Faulk, was awarded a trip to New York City. Lillie Miller and Bessie White tied for second place. The year was filled with many jubilant occasions for the girls and many of the fellows were two and three letter men. Another year had slipped by. When we started the expedition in ' 62 we realized that everyone wouldn ' t reach the top. We realized that the mountain was steep and that we would face many difficulties. But we also realized that at the top was a reward, so as Sept. of ' 64 rolled around we really got to work. We were a little more than half way up. Our guides for the year were Mesdames M. J. Watts, Allie Peebles, K. S. Brown, M. W. Blakely, Elsie Perry, Alberta Levingston, S. V. Perry, M. D. Aldrich ; others were Miss Maye Ligon and C. C. Lipscomb.
