WELCOME ALUMNI In this the thirteenth edition of the Ligon Echo we pay special tribute to those Ligon graduates who have returned and joined our faculty. It is no small wonder that we who taught them just a few years hence saw in them the makings of citizens worthy of return. We are very proud to see them work where they once sat as students and to note the creditable endeavours. Emily Marie Byrd, Secretary to the Assistant Principal, graduated from Ligon in 1960. She participated in the Y-teen activities ' as well as the Glee Club. As a high school senior her ambition was to become a social worker, but times has changed that and she is presently a night student at Raleigh Business College where she is pursuing a course in Secretarial Science. She enjoys her work here at Ligon and feels it an honor to return to her Alma Mater as a member of its Staff. Charles A. Haywood while a student here made his presence felt in the total school program. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, edi- tor of the Tattler, the school newspaper, and president of his senior class of 1958. After graduation from Ligon he attended St. Augustine ' s College where he earned the B.S. degree in Mathematics and Chemistry in 1962. Still athirst for knowledge he entered the University of N. C. at Chapel Hill where he earned the M.A.T. degree in Chemistry in August 1965. Here at Ligon he teaches Physics and Physical Science. Mrs. Mary Smith Bwangamoi is a 1956 graduate of Ligon where she worked dili- gently with the Y-teens, the Sring Ensemble, the Glee Club. After graduation here she enrolled at Virginia State College where she majored in music and earned the B.S. degree. She returned to Ligon after graduation to take com- mand of the Orchestra in which she once played as a student. Desirious of furthering her education she ventured to the University of Colorado where she earned the M.A. de- gree. Now, she is once again at the helm of the Ligon Orchestra. Fidie S. Rudd is also a 1956 graduate. Here she was a member of the N.H.A., the Glee club, the Y-teens and the French Club. Her senior quotation was: As we advance in life, we learn the limits of our abilities. With this in mind she enrolled in Shaw Uni- versity and majored in Business Education and was awarded the B.S. degree. After teach- ing one year in Whitaker, N. C. ; she returned to Ligon where she is presently secretary to our Principal. Mrs. Marjorie Jones Watts graduated in 1955, the second graduating class. Here she actively served as homeroom president, second vice president of the Student Council, Editor of the school paper, Reporter for the Raleigh Times, Assistant Editor of the year- book, a member of the Drama Guild and N.H.A. She was voted most versatile and Most Popular by her classmates in her senior year. After high school she attended Temple School of Business in Washington, D. C. and later served as typist and bookkeeper for Rifkind Sales Co. of D. C. She later enrolled at Shaw University from which she was awarded the B.A. degree. Here at Ligon she teaches U. S. and World History. Mrs. Delores White Revis too is a graduate of Ligon ' s second graduating class, the class of 1955. An honor roll student, she was a member of the Crown and Scepter Honor Society, Student Council, Glee Club, and Special Ensemble. Because of her proficiency as a typist, she received several certificates of merit in that area. Using her business skills, she was chosen an office assistant and a student announcer. Of special significance was her invitation to become a member of the official school committee reviewing the Pupils ' Activity Program, a phase of the school ' s evaluation. As Student Director, Delores participated in the senior class plays. In addition, she was class Historian and graduated number three in a class of more than 125. Mrs. Revis, as a student at St. Augustine ' s College, was a member and president of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, Phi Kappa Alpha National Honor Society, and the City Students Organization. Majoring in English she graduated with honor in 1959. Since then she has completed her work for the M.A. degree at N. C. College. These graduates consider it a privilege to be faculty members at Ligon, for as grad- uates of its hallowed halls, they have more than a casual interest in its program. We con gratulate and welcome you.
