OLIVIA RANEY LIBRARY 4016 Carya Drive Raleigh, NC 27610 The NINETEEN SIXTY-SIX THE ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE STUDENT BODY OF JOHN W. LIGON JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA EDITOR DAVID ALSTON ADVISOR C. C. LIPSCOMB ACTIVITIES The Drama Guild ' s Production of THE QUEENS ENEMIES ( REWORD The facets and diversity of our capital city are many and varied, yet somewhat removed from us as younger citizens, but dear to our hearts are the memories of by- gone days here at our Alma Mater. To preserve a record of these moments and the count- less other experiences of you and your classmates, this Annual strives to capture the eyes and mind of the scholarship, the leadership, the activities and the character of Ligon High School. With the passage of years one may look back upon this school year as the time when the darkness of ignorance suddenly became bright with the gleam of knowledge radiated from this segment of our fair city and say From this Capital City came the 1966 ECHO. These giggling girls and frolicking boys were about to begin a great expedition in search of knowledge and truth. We realized that the journey up Mt. Success would be a difficult one. There would be obstacles to block us. Many of us would fall by the way side, but for us who remained there was a citation, a diploma, which would open many doors for us in the future. So after having packed our gear and met our guides, who were Mesdames M. R. Cook, A. M. Levingston, B. P. Ingram, D. W. Revis ; others were Miss M. C. Bullock and Messrs, R. E. Stewart, D. R. Ingram, G. F. Newell and Coach Peter H. Williams, we started climbing up Mt. Success. As we climbed many of us began to branch out into the various crevices of extracur- ricular activities. Four very energetic young ladies, Mary Collins, Ruthie Goodson, Paulette Harris and Juliette Evans joined the cheering squad. Sallie Sparks, seemingly born to lead, was elected 2nd vice president of the student council. Alma Smith and Bobby Jones won second place in the physical science and biological divisions of the science fair. During the year Louis Alston, Malcolm Debnam and James High became affiliated with the marching band. The year was filled with so much for us all that it seemed to have slipped away from us. Well, it was September again. We were a little more than a fourth of the way to the top. We stopped to get new supplies, new guides, and a few more climbers. The new climbers were graduates of Washington High School who had come to join us. When we left under the capable guidance of Mesdames I. E. Washington, A. M. Levingston, M. V. Lindsey, E. H. Perry, L. H. Webb; others were Miss Rosalyn John- son, Miss M. C. Bullock, Miss M. C. Lee, Messrs, Howard Cunningham, D. R. Ingram, H. E. Archer, and M. C. Hill, we were 377 strong. Many of our boys, namely, David Alston, Michael Chavis, James Goode, Larry Gra- ham, Ralph Guys, Ardo Holt, Robert Mitchener, Donald Poole, Ralph Pope, Michael Ridley, Percy Smith and Robert Watson joined the football team. With the help of these he- men, the Little Blues were declared Eastern District Champions. During this same year Fred Davis began his famous training career. Larry Spence made the varsity basketball squad while James Melvin, James John- son, Robert Drakeford, David Johnson, Jesse Clements, Leland Branch and John Haywood qualified for the J.V. With the help of James Melvin and Larry Graham, Ligon ' s baseball team ended their season with a 9-2 record. In spring of ' 64 John Smith, Charles Worth, Thomas Hilliard, Lawrence Clemmons and Bessie White joined the tennis team. During the following year the team was de- clared state champions. Barbara Allen reigned as Miss Ligon High. Lillie Miller, Ethel Johnson, Brenda Faulk, and Bessie White were contestants in The World Peace Speaking Contest. The winner, Brenda Faulk, was awarded a trip to New York City. Lillie Miller and Bessie White tied for second place. The year was filled with many jubilant occasions for the girls and many of the fellows were two and three letter men. Another year had slipped by. When we started the expedition in ' 62 we realized that everyone wouldn ' t reach the top. We realized that the mountain was steep and that we would face many difficulties. But we also realized that at the top was a reward, so as Sept. of ' 64 rolled around we really got to work. We were a little more than half way up. Our guides for the year were Mesdames M. J. Watts, Allie Peebles, K. S. Brown, M. W. Blakely, Elsie Perry, Alberta Levingston, S. V. Perry, M. D. Aldrich ; others were Miss Maye Ligon and C. C. Lipscomb. CLASS HISTORY James High and Ray Haywood brought honor to the class as winners in the physical science division of the science fair and were later permitted to enter the District Science Fair. Barbara Moring won third place in the biological division of the Science Fair at Ligon. Gloria Hodge, Robert Watson, Doris Avery, Rosa Brown, Dorothy Battle and Lucy Pollard became affiliated with the Mu Alpha Theta Math Club. During the following year Debbie Todd and Carolyn Smith were inducted. Barbara Singletary and Ernest McCrimmon received gold keys for their art exhibits at Greensboro, North Carolina. One night we shall never forget was the Junior-Senior Prom. Because of their love for Ligon, a group of juniors lead by Dorothy Lane and Anna Thomas composed the Junior Class song. Memories of the prom will always linger in our hearts, for it was truly a Rendezvous of the Stars. As the summer approached and school closed, some of us decided to attend various summer institutes. Dorothy Battle qualified for the Governor ' s School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Doris Avery and Brenda Jordan attended Bennett College at Greensboro, North Carolina. James High attended Morehouse in Atlanta, Georgia. As we finished that year, we eagerly anticipated September of ' 65 for we would be seniors at last. Seniors at last ! ! ! We had reached the zenith of Mt. Success. We were advised by Mesdames M. D. Aldrich, M. J. Watts, B. P. Ingram, E. D. Toole, L. H. Webb, R. B. Wil- liams, W. M. Williams, A. M. Levingston; others were Miss E. M. Yeargin and H. A. Poole. Although we had reached the top, there was much preparation before we would be ready to venture out on another and higher mountain. During this year, Bobby Jones and Donald Poole represented us well at the North Carolina State Fair when their works of art won first and second places respectively. Vernon Shaw, Kathie Adams, Shirley Dendy, and other Ligonites had us to tune in every Saturday for Blues in the News. Gloria Turner was crowned Miss Ligon High and reigned over homecoming festivities. James High served as president of the student council during the senior year. Jesse Clements, Robert Drakeford, James Melvin, Larry Allen and Leland Branch lent their energies to the basketball team. At the end of the season they were declared Eastern District Champions. Debbie Todd and Barbara Thorpe were chosen by the Executive Board of the admin- istrative office as models for the Hudson-Belk Company. We were very proud of them. Sallie Sparks served as president of the National Honor Society and Paulette Harris was captain of our cheering squad. Two young men, Donald Poole and Michael Ridley, participated in the Annual Shrine Bowl Game in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Rosa Greene did not miss a day in school during her years at Ligon. While all this was going on, Mrs. Ingram and her playmakers were diligently pre- paring for the presentation of Lock, Stock, and Lipstick, casting James Davis, Debbie Todd, Walter Davenport, Charles Worth, Carolyn Purcell, Gwendolyn Walker, Ethel John- son, Carolyn Freeman, Dorothy Lane, James High, Janet Tucker. Yes, we had finally reached the top of Mt. Success. We shall never forget the many hours we spent on science projects, the toil and labor put in our chemistry, and the in- teresting discussions carried on in government and sociology. The excitment of our junior-senior prom will always linger in our hearts. We salute the Ligon Faculty and assure you that your many hours of teaching have not been in vain. We shall forever strive to be good citizens and to uphold the high ideals you have inculcated. It is no small wonder that we who taught them just a few years hence saw in them the makings of citizens worthy of return. We are very proud to see them work where they once sat as students and to note the creditable endeavours. Emily Marie Byrd, Secretary to the Assistant Principal, graduated from Ligon in 1960. She participated in the Y-teen activities ' as well as the Glee Club. As a high school senior her ambition was to become a social worker, but times has changed that and she is presently a night student at Raleigh Business College where she is pursuing a course in Secretarial Science. She enjoys her work here at Ligon and feels it an honor to return to her Alma Mater as a member of its Staff. Charles A. Haywood while a student here made his presence felt in the total school program. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, edi- tor of the Tattler, the school newspaper, and president of his senior class of 1958. After graduation from Ligon he attended St. Augustine ' s College where he earned the B.S. degree in Mathematics and Chemistry in 1962. Still athirst for knowledge he entered the University of N. C. at Chapel Hill where he earned the M.A.T. degree in Chemistry in August 1965. Here at Ligon he teaches Physics and Physical Science. Mrs. Mary Smith Bwangamoi is a 1956 graduate of Ligon where she worked dili- gently with the Y-teens, the Sring Ensemble, the Glee Club. After graduation here she enrolled at Virginia State College where she majored in music and earned the B.S. degree. She returned to Ligon after graduation to take com- mand of the Orchestra in which she once played as a student. Desirious of furthering her education she ventured to the University of Colorado where she earned the M.A. de- gree. Now, she is once again at the helm of the Ligon Orchestra. Fidie S. Rudd is also a 1956 graduate. Here she was a member of the N.H.A., the Glee club, the Y-teens and the French Club. Her senior quotation was: As we advance in life, we learn the limits of our abilities. With this in mind she enrolled in Shaw Uni- versity and majored in Business Education and was awarded the B.S. degree. After teach- ing one year in Whitaker, N. C. ; she returned to Ligon where she is presently secretary to our Principal. Mrs. Marjorie Jones Watts graduated in 1955, the second graduating class. Here she actively served as homeroom president, second vice president of the Student Council, Editor of the school paper, Reporter for the Raleigh Times, Assistant Editor of the year- book, a member of the Drama Guild and N.H.A. She was voted most versatile and Most Popular by her classmates in her senior year. After high school she attended Temple School of Business in Washington, D. C. and later served as typist and bookkeeper for Rifkind Sales Co. of D. C. She later enrolled at Shaw University from which she was awarded the B.A. degree. Here at Ligon she teaches U. S. and World History. Mrs. Delores White Revis too is a graduate of Ligon ' s second graduating class, the class of 1955. An honor roll student, she was a member of the Crown and Scepter Honor Society, Student Council, Glee Club, and Special Ensemble. Because of her proficiency as a typist, she received several certificates of merit in that area. Using her business skills, she was chosen an office assistant and a student announcer. Of special significance was her invitation to become a member of the official school committee reviewing the Pupils ' Activity Program, a phase of the school ' s evaluation. As Student Director, Delores participated in the senior class plays. In addition, she was class Historian and graduated number three in a class of more than 125. Mrs. Revis, as a student at St. Augustine ' s College, was a member and president of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, Phi Kappa Alpha National Honor Society, and the City Students Organization. Majoring in English she graduated with honor in 1959. Since then she has completed her work for the M.A. degree at N. C. College. These graduates consider it a privilege to be faculty members at Ligon, for as grad- uates of its hallowed halls, they have more than a casual interest in its program. We con gratulate and welcome you.
