621211155 iiaisturp M. E. Ligon, 250 Juniors returned to further complete the building. The framework was up, many stones had been laid, but we had miles to go before we could sleep. Conscious of the rapidly passing time, the laborers, in hopes of achieving excellence before time ran out, attacked the work with more determination than ever. Our new formen led us through a wonderful year full of many new experiences. Carol Adams served as lst Vice-President of the Student Council and Cheryl Hamlin as assistant Secretary along with Kay Stanley, Thomas Hall, Kay Simuel, Rudolph Hin- ton, Burma Paige and Archie Johnson as representatives. Cheryl Hamlin and Mary Har- ris had just returned from the governor's school being the first Ligon students to have this rewarding experience. Bernard Holt, Roy McKay, and Harold Kay became out- standing in track. William Young and Harold Kay received awards in art. Yes, our building was going up fast and only a few stones remained to be added. Yet, it seemed that something vital was missing. Ah yes, color, and what could be more color- ful than a Junior-Senior Prom? With the theme An Evening in Shangri-la our de- signers expertly blended the oriental colors to make this night one never to be forgotten. Summer arrived and only the roof and final touches needed to be added. Some of us refused to be idle and preferred to work individually on placing the final stones. Janie Lindsey, John Massenburg, and Thelma Hall attended the governor's school. Antha Wil- liams and Lawrence Wilson attended the Summer Science Institutes. Now we are seniors, yes, dignified, wise and sophisticated seniors. We are no longer the 290 neophytes that once walked the halls of Ligon High, but 239 willing and deter- mined workers dreaming of that blessed day when our toiling on this building is over and We shall have completed the building of a high school career. Our advisors are J. E. Burke, Mrs. R. B. Williams, H. A. Poole, Mrs. E. M. Yeargin, S. R. Cloud. Mrsg B. P. In- gram, Mrs. E. D. Toole and Mrs. L. Webb. Lawrence Wilson was chosen as senior class President, and his aides were Vice President-Jimmie Howell, Secretary-Cynthia Far- rell, Treasurer-Henry Robinson. Assistant Secretary-Malvise Scott. Parliamentarian -Frederick Lockley, Historian-Lilliam McClain, Sergeant-at-Arms-Emmanuel Allen. The constructors began right away and made short work of finishing the building. Ben Vick Alston qualified for N. C. All-State Band and played in the Capital City Con- cert Band. Frederick Lockley was chosen band President, Jimmie Howell was elected President of the Mu Alpha Theta's Math Club and Lillian McClain as President of the National Honor Society. Carol Adams presided over the entire student body as Student Council President. Janie Lindsey, Thelma Hall, John Massenburg, and James Burt were given Senior Recitals for their outstanding performance in music in the last 4 years William Watson. Tyrone Bailey. George Holloway, Robert Douglas, Gregory Sledge, Bruce Lightner. Alfredo Hicks, and Isaac Massenburg participated in the sports. Xavier Artis, fglfredo Hicks, and James Smith exercised their athletic ability in the East West Shrine ow . Our class presented a three-act nlav-'tTen Little Indians by Agatha Christie. The cast included Mary Harris. Bruce Lightner, Emmanuel Allen, Gwendolyn Wilkins. Jef- frey Madison, Ben Vick Alston, Robert Douglas, Ronald Ellerbe, Lacy Morgan, Lillian McClain, Billy Hunter, and Luke Williams. We have now completed our building and though our hearts sadden at the thought of departing, we must travel on that lonesome road of higher success. We have met in these fine halls for four very short years and now must go wide and far to add our talents, ex- periences, and knowledge to the world. All the world is indeed a stage, and we have made one of our most important exits. May this scene we have now completed help us grow individually and prosper in this world of an advancing society. May we forever remain in our building of excellence, for if the stones are well laid, it can never be demolished. Class Historian- Lillian McClain 37
