Qlllass iiaisturp All world's a stage, V And all the men and women .1 9 are merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts. Yes, we are the actors, the determined seniors who have seen four years go rapidly by, transferring us from silly carefree freshmen to serious-minded seniors. But the stage is set for the next scene and we must go on, for though time has unnoticeably passed, it will never stop for us to take note of its slipping quietly away. To be or not to be was the question in all of our minds as 290 of us began the founda- tion for our high school career in September of 1961. Both ignorant of the tasks await- ing us, and excited by the prospects that the future held, we began to erect a building of excellence in which we could reside for the rest of our lives. Each of us applied a stone that year to the building of our goal with one thought in mind: We shall begin with a firm foundation and be certain of future endeavors or become careless and not be certain of anything. As eager beavers would, we attacked our task with vigor. Under the superb super- vision of Mrs. M. R. Cook, Mrs. B. Ingram, D. R. Ingram, Mrs. A. M. Levingston, J. Levingston, Miss M. E. Ligon, H. A. Poole and P. H. Williams we constructed the first part of our foundation and settled down with dreams and anticipations of the final day when the last stone would be laid. Several of us did more work than the others and thus made ourselves outstanding in various ways. The stones for our building were composed of such varied materials' as talent, scholar- ship, leadership, character, and others too numerous to name, and indeed we had all the required substances. Now that the first stones were laid, our interest increased and in September of 1962 322 sophomores returned to further complete our building. More ingredients were used for our stones, and the substances used the previous year seemed to produce better and more beneficial building blocks. Some of the constructors desired to add color to the building and became outstanding in art. Tyrone Bailey, Margaret Egerton, and Lewis Gill won honorable mention in the Re- gional National Scholastic Art Exhibition at Greensboro. Barbara Dunn was the 1st place winner at the Scholastic Art Exhibit at Women's College in Greensboro. Eric Wilkins won a gold key for a linoleum block print entitled. Voyage into Space. Later that year his work was sent to New York and he received national honorable mention. The boys of course were interested in a different type of stone, athletics. With Ostine Anthony, Cheryl Hamlin, Mary Harris, Cynthia Farrell, Beatrice Bennett, Claudia Jones, and Carol Adams cheering them on, Tyrone Bailey, George Holloway, Joseph Cotton, Bernard Holt, Wilbert Snow, Xavier Artis, Gregory Sledge, and Freddie Hicks played basketball. Xavier Artis, Gregory Sledge, and Sylvester Hilliard exercised their athletic abilities on the football team, and Robert Douglas and Bernard Holt ran track. The foremen, our class advisors, M. C. Hill, Mrs. E. L. Clark, Miss M. C. Bullock, Mrs. E. H. Perry, H. Cunningham, Mrs. M. Lindsey, J. Levingston, D. J. Webster, Mis's M. E. Ligon, and J. A. Abron, Jr., directed and instructed us well, enabling us to become ready willing, and prepared to add the remaining parts of our building, since the end was draw- ing near, and much had to be done before the building of a high school career could be completed. In 1963 under the supervision of Mrs. M. W. Blakely, Mrs. S. V. Perry, Mrs. D. Aldrich, C. C. Lipscomb, Miss E. M. Yeargin, Miss M. B. Bugg, R. Stewart, and Mlss 36
