As the quadricentennial of Eng3land's famous poet drew to an end, the image of William Shakespeare still remains somewhat blurred and controversial but his spirit and words are as re- levant, as vigorous, as immortal as they were in the days he felt and wrote them. No other Writer has created such a colorful array of characters. No other writer has explored so well the innermost feelings of human beings. In his plays he created char- acters' in whom We could identify some of our emotions. Shakespeare has been rightly called the master of the English language. Scholars have counted more than 21,000 different Words in his poems' and plays, and his quotes are as apropos today as they were 400 years ago. Shakespeare's world was the stage-but his stage mirrored the World as it was then and as it is now-a conflict of good and evil. We, the staff of The Echo, pay tribute by selecting quotations from his many Works to carry out our theme. As Ben Johnson said in his First Folio ..... he was not of an age but for all time. Qlllass iiaisturp All world's a stage, V And all the men and women .1 9 are merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts. Yes, we are the actors, the determined seniors who have seen four years go rapidly by, transferring us from silly carefree freshmen to serious-minded seniors. But the stage is set for the next scene and we must go on, for though time has unnoticeably passed, it will never stop for us to take note of its slipping quietly away. To be or not to be was the question in all of our minds as 290 of us began the founda- tion for our high school career in September of 1961. Both ignorant of the tasks await- ing us, and excited by the prospects that the future held, we began to erect a building of excellence in which we could reside for the rest of our lives. Each of us applied a stone that year to the building of our goal with one thought in mind: We shall begin with a firm foundation and be certain of future endeavors or become careless and not be certain of anything. As eager beavers would, we attacked our task with vigor. Under the superb super- vision of Mrs. M. R. Cook, Mrs. B. Ingram, D. R. Ingram, Mrs. A. M. Levingston, J. Levingston, Miss M. E. Ligon, H. A. Poole and P. H. Williams we constructed the first part of our foundation and settled down with dreams and anticipations of the final day when the last stone would be laid. Several of us did more work than the others and thus made ourselves outstanding in various ways. The stones for our building were composed of such varied materials' as talent, scholar- ship, leadership, character, and others too numerous to name, and indeed we had all the required substances. Now that the first stones were laid, our interest increased and in September of 1962 322 sophomores returned to further complete our building. More ingredients were used for our stones, and the substances used the previous year seemed to produce better and more beneficial building blocks. Some of the constructors desired to add color to the building and became outstanding in art. Tyrone Bailey, Margaret Egerton, and Lewis Gill won honorable mention in the Re- gional National Scholastic Art Exhibition at Greensboro. Barbara Dunn was the 1st place winner at the Scholastic Art Exhibit at Women's College in Greensboro. Eric Wilkins won a gold key for a linoleum block print entitled. Voyage into Space. Later that year his work was sent to New York and he received national honorable mention. The boys of course were interested in a different type of stone, athletics. With Ostine Anthony, Cheryl Hamlin, Mary Harris, Cynthia Farrell, Beatrice Bennett, Claudia Jones, and Carol Adams cheering them on, Tyrone Bailey, George Holloway, Joseph Cotton, Bernard Holt, Wilbert Snow, Xavier Artis, Gregory Sledge, and Freddie Hicks played basketball. Xavier Artis, Gregory Sledge, and Sylvester Hilliard exercised their athletic abilities on the football team, and Robert Douglas and Bernard Holt ran track. The foremen, our class advisors, M. C. Hill, Mrs. E. L. Clark, Miss M. C. Bullock, Mrs. E. H. Perry, H. Cunningham, Mrs. M. Lindsey, J. Levingston, D. J. Webster, Mis's M. E. Ligon, and J. A. Abron, Jr., directed and instructed us well, enabling us to become ready willing, and prepared to add the remaining parts of our building, since the end was draw- ing near, and much had to be done before the building of a high school career could be completed. In 1963 under the supervision of Mrs. M. W. Blakely, Mrs. S. V. Perry, Mrs. D. Aldrich, C. C. Lipscomb, Miss E. M. Yeargin, Miss M. B. Bugg, R. Stewart, and Mlss 36 621211155 iiaisturp M. E. Ligon, 250 Juniors returned to further complete the building. The framework was up, many stones had been laid, but we had miles to go before we could sleep. Conscious of the rapidly passing time, the laborers, in hopes of achieving excellence before time ran out, attacked the work with more determination than ever. Our new formen led us through a wonderful year full of many new experiences. Carol Adams served as lst Vice-President of the Student Council and Cheryl Hamlin as assistant Secretary along with Kay Stanley, Thomas Hall, Kay Simuel, Rudolph Hin- ton, Burma Paige and Archie Johnson as representatives. Cheryl Hamlin and Mary Har- ris had just returned from the governor's school being the first Ligon students to have this rewarding experience. Bernard Holt, Roy McKay, and Harold Kay became out- standing in track. William Young and Harold Kay received awards in art. Yes, our building was going up fast and only a few stones remained to be added. Yet, it seemed that something vital was missing. Ah yes, color, and what could be more color- ful than a Junior-Senior Prom? With the theme An Evening in Shangri-la our de- signers expertly blended the oriental colors to make this night one never to be forgotten. Summer arrived and only the roof and final touches needed to be added. Some of us refused to be idle and preferred to work individually on placing the final stones. Janie Lindsey, John Massenburg, and Thelma Hall attended the governor's school. Antha Wil- liams and Lawrence Wilson attended the Summer Science Institutes. Now we are seniors, yes, dignified, wise and sophisticated seniors. We are no longer the 290 neophytes that once walked the halls of Ligon High, but 239 willing and deter- mined workers dreaming of that blessed day when our toiling on this building is over and We shall have completed the building of a high school career. Our advisors are J. E. Burke, Mrs. R. B. Williams, H. A. Poole, Mrs. E. M. Yeargin, S. R. Cloud. Mrsg B. P. In- gram, Mrs. E. D. Toole and Mrs. L. Webb. Lawrence Wilson was chosen as senior class President, and his aides were Vice President-Jimmie Howell, Secretary-Cynthia Far- rell, Treasurer-Henry Robinson. Assistant Secretary-Malvise Scott. Parliamentarian -Frederick Lockley, Historian-Lilliam McClain, Sergeant-at-Arms-Emmanuel Allen. The constructors began right away and made short work of finishing the building. Ben Vick Alston qualified for N. C. All-State Band and played in the Capital City Con- cert Band. Frederick Lockley was chosen band President, Jimmie Howell was elected President of the Mu Alpha Theta's Math Club and Lillian McClain as President of the National Honor Society. Carol Adams presided over the entire student body as Student Council President. Janie Lindsey, Thelma Hall, John Massenburg, and James Burt were given Senior Recitals for their outstanding performance in music in the last 4 years William Watson. Tyrone Bailey. George Holloway, Robert Douglas, Gregory Sledge, Bruce Lightner. Alfredo Hicks, and Isaac Massenburg participated in the sports. Xavier Artis, fglfredo Hicks, and James Smith exercised their athletic ability in the East West Shrine ow . Our class presented a three-act nlav-'tTen Little Indians by Agatha Christie. The cast included Mary Harris. Bruce Lightner, Emmanuel Allen, Gwendolyn Wilkins. Jef- frey Madison, Ben Vick Alston, Robert Douglas, Ronald Ellerbe, Lacy Morgan, Lillian McClain, Billy Hunter, and Luke Williams. We have now completed our building and though our hearts sadden at the thought of departing, we must travel on that lonesome road of higher success. We have met in these fine halls for four very short years and now must go wide and far to add our talents, ex- periences, and knowledge to the world. All the world is indeed a stage, and we have made one of our most important exits. May this scene we have now completed help us grow individually and prosper in this world of an advancing society. May we forever remain in our building of excellence, for if the stones are well laid, it can never be demolished. Class Historian- Lillian McClain 37 Adams, Kathie C. Allen Anthony W Allen Barbara A.
