Herley Evans convinces Coach Poole that position is important. class histo ry The journey through high school for the class of 1964 has been a wonderful one filled with many heart-warming, intriguing experiences. Now that it nears an end, we Seniors look back over the years and wonder. The journey was long and difficult and yet it passed so rapidly that many of us were often unaware of the passing. We have been transformed from giggling Freshmen to proud Seniors in four short years. The occurrence of this transformation has been so subtle that we often were not conscious of it but we became more and more conscious of the change as time progressed. In September of 1960, 220 eager boys and girls entered the Freshman class of the John W. Ligon High School family. We were all eager to partake of the knowledge awaiting us. We stepped over the threshold of a four-year career and all the time envisioned June of 1964 when our journey would finally end. We realized that we were wholly responsible for what would happen within the four years so we began striving for excellence. We were guided by Mrs. M. R. Cook, Mrs. A. M. Levingston, Miss M. E. Ligon, J. E. Burke, S. R. Cloud, J. C. Levingston, and P. H. Williams. With an eagernes's that only neophytes can possess, we contributed our members in whatever capacity they were needed. Hilda Austin, Lawrence Reid, Leotha Debnam, Phyllis Terry, and Diann White were elected as Student Council representatives and Robert Manuel was elected as 2nd Vice President. Reginald Smith, Carolyn Judkins, and Denyce Stokes joined the String Orchestra. Otha Pretty, Robert Sanders, Lee Davis, Daniel Peebles, Sylvester Davis, James Hines, Freddie Curtis, Alfonza Jones, Michael Keck, and Gerald Latta played in the Band. With Mrs. E. L. Clark, Miss M. C. Bullock, H. Cunningham, M. C. Hill, Mrs. M. B. Lindsey, Mrs. E. H. Perry, and D. J. Webster, Jr., as our consultants, 232 sophomores began the second phase of our high school career. Carolyn Carter and Faye Eaton were added to the String Orchestra and Theresa Phillips joined the Band. June and Janet Powell, Carolyn Jones, Betty Roberts, James McCullough, Beverly Hicks, Sandra Sanders, Mary Garvin, Leotha Debnam, and Carrie King contributed their voices' to the mixed chorus. The sophomore class of 1962 was well represented on the Student Council. Carolyn Redfern was elected assistant secretary and Robert Manuel was elected treasurer with Iris Allen, Chester Bennett, Faye Eaton, William Moore, George Morgan, and Patricia Thomas as representatives. Alfonza Jones became the new Drum Major of the Band. Members of the class of 1964 began to show their athletic prowess in 1962 and these players' remained until their senior year. In their senior year Willie Dean White, Freddie Curtis, Wilbert Jones, John Giles, Herley Evans, Lawrence Reid, William Peacox, Daniel Peebles, Chester Bennett, Walter Ellis, Robert Allen, Horace Robinson, Lee Cmmie Davis, James Hines, Eddie Turner, and Robert Hunter played on the football team. Willie White, Alfonza Jones, Ralph Campbell, Walter Ellis, Bobby Clay, Curtis Gill, Bobby Moore, and Lee Ommie Davis played on the basketball team. Before we could realize it we had progressed on our journey to the status of juniors. Guided by Mrs. M. W. Blakely, Mrs. M. H. Davis, C. C. Lipscomb, Mrs. S. V. Perry, Miss M. B. Bugg, and S. R. Cloud, we enjoyed a fruitful year. Janet Young reigned as Miss Ligon High. As exchange students Carolyn Carter went to Dillard High School in Goldsboro, North Carolina, Dorothy Shaw went to Darden High in Wilson, North Carolina, Robert Manuel went to Williston High in Wilmington, North Carolina. Elvira Stewart, Wilma Shaw, Norfleet Dunston, and Mac Arthur Penny earned coveted awards for their works of art. Diann White was elected President of the North Carolina Association of High School Library Clubs. Gilda Adcock showed her athletic prowess. She was the Eastern District Tennis Champion since 1962 and was runner-up in the State Tennis Tournament for singles and doubles. Because they displayed significant signs of character, scholarship, leadership, and service, Carolyn Carter, Faye Eaton, Beverly Hicks, Shirley Horton, Carolyn Judkins, Helen Morrison, William Peacox, Mac Arthur Penny, Natalie Wilson, Reginald Smith. Dorothy Shaw, Diann White, and Lawrence Reid were inducted in the National Honor Society. Faye Eaton, Leotha Debnam, Carolyn Carter, Shirley Horton, Helen Morrison, William Peacox, Lawrence Reid, and Diann White were admitted to the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Club. The highlight of the year was the night of May 3, 1963. The most spectacular night of all!! Our Junior-Senior Prom!! We all worked hard to make it a success and felt afterwards that our efforts were not in vain. Our theme was Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom Time. Though school closed for the summer, the pursuit for knowledge did not end with the school year. Faye Eaton and Diann White attended the Summer Science Institute at class history Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Reginald Smith, Dorothy Shaw, Carolyn Carter, William Peacox, and Leotha Debnam attended a similar institute at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Seniors at last !! Finally we reached the final phase in our high school education. We dwindled to 196 students, determined and looking toward that day in June when we would finally reach our goal. J. E. Burke, Mrs. G. H. Harris, Mrs. R. B. Williams, H. A. Poole, J. A. Abron, and Mrs. E. D. Toole were our advisors and William Peacox was senior class President. The other class officers were Vice President-Robert Manuel, Secretary- Sarah Morgan, Assistant Secretary-Helen Morrison, Treasurer - Leotha Debnam, Parliamentarian-Mac Arthur Penny, Historian-Diann White. Willie White and Freddie Curtis were elected co-captains of the senior-stocked foot- ball team. Willie White and Alfonza Jones were elected co-captains of the basketball team. Robert Allen and James Hines were elected co-captains of the baseball team, and Charles Copeland and Daniel Peebles were elected co-captains of the track team. One event that was eagerly anticipated was the election of Senior Superlatives. They were: Most Likely to Succeed - Diann White and William Peacoxg Wittiest - Louise Hunter and Eddie Turner, Most Co-operative - Natalie Wilson and Robert Sanders, Best Dressed - Carolyn Warren and Eugene Branch, Most Versatile - Sarah Morgan and Robert Allen, Most Attractive - Helen Morrison and Walter Ellis, Most Musical - Marie Bryant and Michael Keck, Most Studious - Diann White and Mac Arthur Penny, Most Pleasing Personality - Carolyn Jones and Freddie Curtis, Most Business Like - Hilda Austin and Robert Manuel, and Most Athletic - Gilda Adcock and Willie Dean White, Most Popular - Sarah Morgan and Herley Evans. Our class presented a five-act play- Pygmalion'i by George Bernard Shaw. The cast included Nelson Bost, Frances Williams, Duanna Freeman, Dorothy Shaw, Cornelia Gaddy, Geraldine Sanders, Carolyn Redfern, Kary Lewis, Gerald Latta, Clarence Leverette, Wilbert Jones, Robert Allen, Frank Turner and Leotha Debnam. The thirst for knowledge was not quenched by the hours spent at school. Over twenty Ligon seniors participated in the High School Scholars Program at Saint Augustine's Col- lege. Leotha Debnam and Robert Manuel were inducted in the National Honor Society and William Deloatch was admitted to the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Club. Many of the members of our class brought honor to themselves and their school by some special recognition. Patricia Pattishaw won 2nd place in the 1964 District Typing Contest. In 1962 James Reid won 3rd prize in the Physics division of the science fair. In 1963 Lawrence Reid won lst prize in the Biology division of the science fair. Though the track team was a neophyte, some of its members - Charles Copeland, George Gartrell, Daniel Peebles, Horace Robinson, Willie Holder, and Robert Sanders - won special awards at the Boy Scout track meet held at State College during the 1963-1964 school year. In the annual Jabberwock, Carolyn Carter, Beverly Hicks, Faye Eaton, and Patricia Thomas won special awards. Sandra Sanders received honorable mention. The athletic achieve- ments of Willie White are too numerous to mention. He excelled in tennis and football and won special recognition in both. Marie Bryant received certificates for participating in recent Omega Talent Hunts. Shirley Horton was chosen to represent Ligon High School at the 1963 United Nations Workshop at State College. Wilbert Jones, Robert Allen, Willie White, and Freddie Curtis brought special recognition to themselves by being chosen to play in the Shrine Bowl in Durham, North Carolina. Charles Copeland brought honor and fame to himself by being the fastest track runner in the state of North Carolina. Kary Lewis and Charles Copeland were praised because of their finesse at the piano and organ keyboards. - Our class has been very active in helping to get this Echo for 1964 completed. Some people who gave much assistance were Carolyn Judkins, Ralph Campbell, Hilda Austin, Janet Young, Patricia Thomas, Eugene Branch and Brenda Harris. As the year of our graduation closes, it saddens' our hearts to know that though we have been together for many years, the time has come when we must separate. From the threshold of this treasured edifice each of us will go. We go to spread our talents to the waiting world. The days have been enjoyable ones-ones that we may view in retrospect with great pleasure and delight. As we part, may we never be really separated but may we only loosen the links of our chain of 1964 graduates to include others. May we forever maintain the high ideals which have been instilled in us during our days within these treasured walls. May these ideals and others make us good citizens in an advancing society. Many of their duties entail behind the scenes activities that are seldom seen by the public. The student who works in the library is there because he elected to be there, as a result, the work that he does means a great deal to him as well as to his school. Experiences are provided to give the assistants an opportunity to explore vocational interests, an opportunity to promote cooperative attitudes betvves-n the librarian and students, an opportunity to en- gage in democratic processes, practice in developing and using special abilities and skills, and finally, each assistant helps to increase and improve library service to the school community. The work experience opportunities vvhich the library offers, and the challenge which it extends to this special group is considered important and necessary in the operation of Ligon's Library. Foxwell confer on administrative matters. the principalgs message My Young Friends: As you graduate and move on to participate in our larger society, we'd like to remind you of the responsibility which you owe to this society. One of our great thinkers, Goethe said, The destiny of a nation can be determined at anytime by the opinions of her youth. Likewise, upon returning to Athens after a trip, Socrates inquired about the welfare of youth. When asked the reason why, he said, Because the future of Athens depends upon her. These thoughts are as timely today as they were years past. Even though this is primarily an educational institution, We know that education is not the final answerg youth needs more than education. Along with the trained mind, youth needs the atti- tude of concern for all g and the Willingness to accept the responsibility for making of himself the kind of person in whose hands-our world will be safe for the Good Life Which God has' made possible for us. We believe that you are Willing and able to shoulder these responsibilities. We pray God's Eternal Blessings upon you in your endeavors. H. E. Brown acult ABRON, JR,, J. A. ALLISON, MRS. MUREIL W.
