THE FOLLOWING ARE EXCERPTS FROM DR. VAN CLEAVE ' S ADDRESS TO THE FALL 1976 CONVOCATION (Sermon text was Joshua 3:2-4) Now I think the expanding christian life has three aspects: first of all, it is a life of winning victories, in the second aspect, it is a life of constant discipline and obedience. And finally, it is a life of continuous possession of God ' s promised land. My friends, there are many battles ahead for you and your expanding, growing Christian life, but those battles that are important, God is going to give you by faith. Unless we go forth from this school disciplined, all the academic excellence of the classroom will be of little value. Far be it from me to be anti-intellectual, but on the other hand, unless we are submitted to God and to one another, we will have little value as ministers. Joshua told the children of Israel to go behind the Ark of the Covenant, stay 2,000 cubits behind it. Let God lead the way! You ' re going to possess the land because the Ark of the Covenant goes before you. The Holy Spirit will lead the way - Divine power will lead the way, and you will win the victory because you follow the Ark of the Covenant! Finally, in the ever expanding Christian life it will be a life of possession of God ' s land! How important to our lives constantly learning the will of God. In fact that is a very important part of this growing Christian life - learning to walk in the will of the God! My friends, if we don ' t do anything else during our years here, let ' s be filled with the Spirit! Let ' s learn the power of prayer! Let ' s have the mantle of God upon us! Let ' s experience God in our lives so that when we stand before those whom God will give us, the finger of God will cause us to stand out!... You see friends, as we grow in the Lord, no matter how many years we ' ve been In the ministry, when you come to a point when God says, you haven ' t been growing lately , submit your heart and life and grow! Then see what the Lord will do! And it is my prayer and my hope that when this year has been concluded, that every one of you will be able to say in your heart sincerely before the Living God, We mie not passed mis woxj before...
